ODD FELLOWS' DEDICATION.
Dedication of the New_ Mall of Fort Harrison Lodge 157,1. O. 0. F.
Large Attendance—An Eloquent Address —JliiNir—Imposing Dedicatory Ceremony—Banquet—Impromptu
Speeches, Ac.
Yesterday was a great day for the Odd Fellows of Terre Haute, as it was the day set apart for the dedication of their new and beautiful Lodge room in Gilbert's Elock, East Main street. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather the attendance was quite large.
A 2 P. M. the two Lodges of the city, the Clinton Lodge and representatives from various neighboring Lodges, formed in procession and headed by Breinig's Brass Band, paraded the streets and repaired to Dowling Hall where, considering the unfavorable state of the weather —rain descending in torrents—a very flattering audience, being composed largely of ladies, was assembled.
The exercises of the afternoon opened with music by the band, which was followed by the chiorof the Lodge, assisted by Mrs. Gould and Mrs. Bichardson, rendering some very beautiful odes, appropriate to the occasion, in most charming and excellent style, after which, Bev. James Ilill, pastor of Asbury M. E. Church, addressed the Throne of Grace in a few well-chosen words. P. G. M., W. K. Edwards, acting President of the day, then introduced the Bev. B. F. Foster, of Indianapolis, who delivered
THE ADDRESS OF TIIE DAY. Past Grand Master, Brethren of the Mystic Tie, Ladies and Gentleman Today has been set apart for the purpose of dedicating and consecrating with appropriate devotion the beautiful hall that has been prepared under the auspices of Fort Harrison Lodge No. 157. In prefacing the exercises of the day and the evening I propose to deliver a short address on "the mission of the Order of Odd Fellows."
From time immemorial have such occasions been celebrated with festivities and rejoicings, and I shall proceed at once to the pleasant task before me of presenting, in a tangible form, those plaiu, vital truths upon which our superstructure has been builded, and in doing so I shall present to you the great practical lessons of the Order in plain, practical lauguage, rather than the rhetoric imagination. In fact, truth knows no rhetoric.
The speaker then proceeded with a most able and eloquent address, in the course of which, he set forth the objects and aims of the Order, what it had accomplished and was daily accomplishing for the good of humanity proving by sound logic, and documental evidence, that to the fraternal Order of Odd Fellows was due much of the credit of the pre.vention of the dismemberment of our glorious Union by sectional differences, and internal strife.
He also painted in glowing colors, by eloquent words and convincing argument, that the Brotherhood were day by day, and night by night, relieving the sufferings and wants of the widows and orphans, and the destitute in all lands and on every hand. Odd Fellowship, he held, was a "stepping stone" to religion, though they did not claim for it powers of salvation. The speaker admitted that in their Lodges, as in churches and all organizations, there were members who are unworthy of the name, but like other organizations, while such a state of things was to be regretted and deplored, it could not be prevented.
Odd Fellowship, he said, is objected to by some because of its being a secret Order notwithstanding the fact that it is claimed to be a secret Order, they publish to the world their numbers, the state of their finances, and many other factj and figures, and what secroo^-"^*c in the Order is nee"*-*"/ to Pr°tect them against ^position by those who are not .^uibers thereof.
The speaker closed his remarks by addressing himself to the ladies present and paying them a handsome, and we think just and deserved compliment, by saying in the course of his remarks to them that, "however we may disguise the fact, women wield a power in the social and moral world that cannot be resisted where her sympaties are enlisted where
bcr energies are put forth, there are 110
which she maybe engaged." He believed the Order of Rsbeka an important element in the success of the Order of Odd Followship.
His remarks were listened to with the closest attention and the deepest interest throughout, and warmly applauded at its closc. Did time and space admit, we should have given a verbatim report of the able and eloquent address.
At the close of Mr. Foster's remarks the choir rendered a beautiful ode and the assemblage dispersed, the delegation parading the streets again preceded by Breinig's Band, presenting a very imposing appearance.
TIIE DEDICATIORY CEREMONIES At the new Hall in the evening commenced about 7 o'clock, and were of a very imposing and beautiful character, which was witnessed by a large and brilliant assemblage, which ceremony was closed by the sprinkling of water, lighting fire on the altar, scattering wheat and strewing flowers, etc.
TIIE IIALL
Is one of great beauty and of comfortable size, being 40 by 50, with appropriate ante-rooms, and is furnished in elegant and luxurious style, the walls being artistically decorated with emblems of the Order, and beautiful engravings, paintings and chromos. The dedication throughout was worthy of the magnificent hall dedicated. At the close of of the dedicatory ceremonies came the
SPEECHES AND BANQUET. Short cxlcmporc speeches were made by Rev. B. F. Foster and John Reynolds, of Indianapolis, I. M. Brown and Murry Briggs, of Sullivan, John G. Campbell, of Clinton Col. W. K. Edwards, Rev. James Hall, C. E. 'Hosford, B. Holmes and James Hook of this city, appropriate to the occasion, which "feast of reason and flow of soul" was followed by a feast of another character, and we won't say what flowed, for we don't know.
The banquet was a grand success. Not the least pleasant feature of the occasion was the large attendance of ladies, who did more to beautify the hall than did eve on the walls
than did even the beautiful decorations have so far enjoyed.

INTERESTING STATISTICS.—Some genius who has devoted his time and energies to the examination of statistics, reports that more money is expended in the United States for cigars than for common schools. Whereat a still more investigating genius asserts that the cost of washing linen which might just as well be worn a day longer amounts to enough in this country, to more than defray the expenses or the American board of foreign missions the expense of buttons on the backs of coats, where they are of no earthly use, is equal to the support of all our orphans, that the value of old boots thrown aside which might have been worn at least a day longer, is more than enough to buy a flannel night-gown for every baby in the land, and that the cost of every inch on the full shirt collars of young men is equal to the sum necessary to put a Bible in the hands of every Patagonian giant. iS»
