THE fate of many a politician will be decided to-day. It is likely that some will be disappointed, for all can't be elected, they say.
"MANHOOD and its Improvements," will be the theme of the "Father of Phrenology" at Dowling Hall this evening, for men exclusively.
TIIE latest dose of sickly sentimental song is entitled, "Give my button string to Josie." The author is at work on "Lend my chewing gum to Gertie."
A NEW garter is heralded. It is a heavy, round elastic chain, much the style of the heavy gold chain upon which lockets are worn, and has a hook and eye upon it. The hook is pardonable, but the eyes is reprehensible.
THE resignation of Mr. A. A. Tallmadge,General .Superintendent of the St. Louis & Indianapolis Railroad Company, has been accepted by the Directors of the road, and he will be succeeded by Mr. Skinner, formerly of the Little Mia ma Railroad.

THE city was never more quiet than to-day, notwithstanding that it is election day. It seems that the great and momentious question as to who shall control the police affairs of this city and whether we are to have a free bridge across the Wabash and a new Court House is to be decided without much noise.
TEMPERANCE ALLIANCE MEETING.— There will be a temperance meeting held under the auspices of the State Temperance Alliance, at Dowling Hall, in this city, on next Sunday afternoon and evening, which meeting will be addressed by Prof. Hoss, of Bloomington, aud other eloquent and distinguished ^speakers. The public are cordially invited and solicited to attend, as it is a matter that interests every individual of the community deeply.

TO EUGENE BY RAIL.
Excursion Over the E., T. & C. R. R. An excursion over a portion of the Evansville, Terre Haute & Chicago Railroad was hastily planned yesterday morning, which for the short notice upon which it wasgotton up, was a decided success.
Quite a number of the prominent businessmen of the city, accompanied
by their ladies and Mr. George O. Giavis, of New York, who will sail for! EXACTLY SO—That I am offerin
there will negotiate with bankers for a sale of some -of-Ac. the bonds the road. W understand m2dlm that an order has already' been received!
Giavis came to this city and after a conference with President Collett and other prominent railroad men, an excursion
was planned in order that Mr. G. could see for himself the construction and condition of the road, and the location and I situation of the country through which it i»a:
Mr. Giavis expressed himself as being highly pleased and gratified with the location and construction of the road that with all his experience and observations I as a traveling man, he has never passed I over a more solid and enduring road than the one now under consideration, including the various bridges which are models of beauty, solidity and durability that for a new road it is the soundest and in better condition than any over which he is over passed, while the country for produc-1
tiveness and beauty is unsurpassed in the garden of the world—the great Mississippi Valley—while underneath the rich soil at a distance of about GO feet are some of the richest stratas of coal to be found anywhere in this section of the country and besides this, the road runs through quarries of very valuable stone. The road opens up direct communication between the North and the South, thus rendering it one of the most important roads in the land.
If the work continues in the future as in the past, by the middle of November we will have direct communication with Chicago, over a road, that for construction and durability, will be second to none anywhere to be found, and through some of the most productive and beautiful country that the eye ever beheld. The road was laid out by the most skillful engineers, and is being constructed of the best material and by the best workmen to be had. None other than the popular '•Fish-joint'7-rails are being used in its construction, over which a train glides with the smoothness of a boat gliding through*'still water.
Entertainments Last Evening.
DOWLING HALL.
Prof. O. S. Fowler, the great father of Phrenology, lectured to about sixty persons at this beautiful little hall last evening, on the subject of "Love, Courtship and Married Life." The audience was mostly composed of young senti-
have reason to believe went home fully resolved to love each other as never before, and at once and forever stop flirting. We hope they will have grace abundant to keep their vows.
BEACH'S HALL.
The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, gave their third annual ball—"the last of the season"—at this commodious and neat hall. About sixty or seventy-five couples were present, most of whom participated and "tripped the light fantastic" until early breakfast time to the music of Toute's excellent quadrille band.
A DISGRACEFUL row occurred at the Ninth Street Engine House at the Fireman's ball about one o'clock this morning, in which pistols and knives were drawn, aud one shot fired from a revolver, (by parties who were evidently under the influence of benzine) butwithout doing any damage. A short time afterwards the parties passed along Ohio street towards the river, yelling and make the night hideous with frightful oath, disturbing all the good people for squares, even arousing many of the boarders at the Terre Haute House. We have unpleasant remembrance of having heard the disturbance, and being awakened from a
Hind sleep thereby. We understand the matter will be investigated and for the present will say nothing personal, but we do insist that the guilty parties be brought to justice and made respect the laws and quiet of our city, whoever they are. No man in this city, whoever or whatever he may be, has any right to disturb peaceable citizens aud shock the liner sensibilities of ladies with oaths and blackguardism, not even the night before election day.
CUUBCII SOCIAL, AND Suri'EK.—Let it not be forgotten that there will be a church social and supper at Asbury M. E. Church this evening, given under the auspices of the young ladies of the church. We would most heartily commend the enterprise to the patronage of our readers, as one well-worthy of patronage, as in addition to the real pleasure experienced thereat, you will be furthering a noble cause, as the proceeds go to the Sunday School of that church. Don't fail to be in attendance, therefore. The prices of admission is only 15 cents for adults, and 10 cents for children, while supper will only cost you 25 cents, whereas, if you go to a hotel or restaurant, it will coat you 50 or 75 cents, and you wun'tget half so good a one, and will also be denied the company of the dear, blessed ladies.
BLACKGUARDING on the streets is becoming entirely to common in this city and cannot be tolerated. Yesterday evening ayoung man, known among his pals by the name of "Frenchy," who is a cigar maker was standing in front of the Cincinnati House indulging in swearing and blackguarding at a frightful rate while several ladies were passing along the street. Though he was under the influence of liquor it was no excuse for him. Such nuisances must be stopped for citizens cannot and will not tolerate such displays upon eur streets.
The train left the Union depot about whereas, an election for city officers will half-past 11 o'clock yesterday miming, be hold in the city of Terre Haute, on and made the run to Eugene—a distance Tuesday, the 2d day of May, 1S71, I I of o7 miles—in about an hour and a half.
