WE are surprised at the immense amount of smoke, that is sought to be made cut of a very small, and to our mind, a very proper affair. Mr. Schoemehl, it seems, signed the following petition to the Board of Trustees of the City Schools. Weil what of it? Is there anything wrong about that? For the life of us we cannot see that there is. The petition is signed by some of our best citizens, men of both political parties, and should not have been brought into a canvass of this kind.

This is a free country. Free to worship God according to the dictates of every man's conscience. Free to express opinions on any subject, without fear or favor from any quarter. Free as the air, the water and sunlight. Then why be intolerent, and attempt to curb this Ireedora of thought, of opinion, and of action.

We regret very much that this-very small matter lias found its way before the people at this time, for such things arc not calculated to promote the public harmony or further the general good:

Here is the petition over which there is sought to be made such a fuss: TERK HAUTE, Aug. :3, 1S70. To the Honorable Board of Trustees of our

City iSchools of lew Haute, Intl.: Having hoard that the capacity of our eity school houses are insufficient lor all the children of our city, we the undersigned citizens of Terre Haute, and .stockholders of tho school house on tho northeast corner of Ninth and Walnut streets, would respectfully petition the Honorable above named School Board to accept the use of our school Jiouse, with tho understanding that Mr. J. P. Vesque, a licensod public school teachcr of our city, be its teacher and the children ,t oing there to school be permitted to continue to do so. The school iiouso is well arranged and ventilated, provided with proper school desks and other requirements. Please grant our petition at least lor tho next school year, pa3ring tho whole or at least part of the salary of Mr. J. P. A e^quo, which is £80 per month, from our public citv school fund. T. II. THE MUSICAL CRITIC OF THE PERIOD is John Littlefield of that mammoth weekly, the Marshal Messenger, as will be observed by a careful perusal of the following criticism on the grand opera of 11 Trovatore, which was so beautifully rendered at the Opera House in this city by the English Opera Combination last Tuesday evening. We clip from the Messenger of this week:

The performance was completely drowned in science. Tho instruments of music were large and so were tho musicians. The singers were dressed in very peculiar costumes. The male part of tho singers wore tight pants of the old English stylo, high blue shoes, white hunting shirts and blue bladders drawn over tiieir heads. They made a graceful appearance. What language they talked in, sang in, or what they were singing or talking about, is bovond our comprehension. We suppose'it was a good thing, but a man must be operatically educated to appreciate it. One noticeablo feature of tho show was an enormous pair of ears. But upon closer inspection with a paper glass it was discovered that the Kentucky Pacer was under them. No doubt he was pleased with the show, at least he did not lack ear for music. The show was a pecuniary success and all from judicious advertising by B. G. Cox. One part of tho showwas the enormous crowd at the National. Another part of the show was a complete success, the show of good things on the supper table at the National. We only remained at the Opera two hours and were compellod to tear ourself away beforo the performers had come to tho nub of the play or music. A man that would not give two dollars to hear and see that show is simply an unapreciative wretch and shows his greenness.

The criticism speaks for itself, and wc submit it without comment, though it shows unmistakable evidences of the writer thereof, having refreshed himself with a "free lunch" at the National House, by which he was nourished, and thus enabled to write such a "stunning" comment on the Opera.

IN A PREDICAMENT.—A batchelor friend of ours who lias been "playing sweet" to a young lady of this city, has been very unhappy for some time, by reason of his harboring a suspicion that the "idol of his adoration," was being made happy by the smiles of one more "childlike and bland" than he. Cherishing this unhappy feeling, lie determined, a few evenings since, that lie would make an invisible call at the domicile wherein he feared his optics would convince him that his fears were but too well founded, allowing his curiosity to get the better of his descretion. He called at*tlie yard fence about 10:20 P. M., hoping under cover of the friendly darkness to observe and not be observed, lie peeped into the window* and oh, ye gods, there was the bland young man sitting close to the side of the fair damsel quietly and persistently sipping the nectar from her sweet lips with a fair prospect of not leaving any for him. His excitement now becoming intense he mounted the picket fence with malice aforethought to assault and batter the "young blood," but, alas for human calculations one of the pickets penetrated one of the legsof his trowsers, and precipitated him to the ground, makingsuch a rent in the leg ofhisnewpants as necessitated his interviewing a merchant tailor next morning, and his venting his rage against the pickets and for getting the tableaux inside tho domicile.

PERSONAL MENTION.—I. M. Brown, of the BtHlivau Union is in the city, and illuminated our sanctum with his brilliant countenance and sparkling wit "this morning. Ike is a trump.

We caught a glimpse of the pleasant face of that prince of landlords and jolly good fellows, Rigby, of the National House Brazil, on the streets this morning. We have had the pleasure of enjoying his hospitalities recently and know whereof we speak when we say that he knows how to run a hotel in the interest of his guests as well as his own. As a hotel manager and proprietor Rigby is a success.

Frank Seaman, late foreman of the GAZETTE'S office job room, very pleasurably surprised us by putting in an appearance in our sanctum this morning. He came here from West Virginia, where he had charge of the State printing, to see his family and attend to some business. He looks well, and is as lively and jolly as ver.

HONORABLY ACQUITTED.—It gratifies us exceedingly to be able to announce the honorable acquittal of the young lady teacher who was charged with excessively punishing one of the students under her instruction. The case was heard before L. li. Denehie, Esq., and ajury of eight men, who, after a patient hearing of the evidence, pro and con, found the defendant not guilty.

TO THE TSSASE.

In returning my thanks to the trade for their liberal patronage in the past, and soliciting continuance of the same, I beg leave to state that, having made extensive addition to my works, and increased facilities, I am now prepared to All orders with promptness and dispatch.

The VINEGAR which I manufacture from cider and distilled spirits is entirely PURE, and FREE FROM ALL MINERAL ACIDS OR OTHER POISONOUS INGREDIENTS SO FREQUENTLY USED IN ITS MANUFACTURE. It is both clear and of beautiful color, and.made from the best and most wholesome material. I warrant it to keep piokles both clear and fresh for years, thus making their consumption not only agreeable, but healthy.

Owing to the popularity and increasing demand for my Vinegar, I shall hereafter, for the better protection of myself and my trade, in addition to my well-known brands, use also a "TRADE MARK," and all persons are liereby cautioned against using the same, and I shall prosecute any and all parties so doing to the full extent of the law. Country merchants can oba a so
