THE FIRE FIEND.
Two Fires Last Sight.
Narrow Escape from Destruction of Jlic Opera House.
THE FIRST.
Last evening about half-past six o'clock, the country residence of Messrs. Butz & Son, proprietors of the National House, and situated about two and a half miles west of this city, on the National road, and occupied by a family named Hoffman, was discovered to be on fire, and burned until it was totally destroyed.
It appears that the family, with the exception of a young girl, were absent and that the fire originated from a defective Hue in a little summer kitchen adjoining the main structure, and burned with great rapidity, though all the furniture was saved by the prompt and energetic action of the neighbors, to whom are due the thanks of the family. The building was a frame one, and was valued at about $1,800. We could not learn whether the building was insured or not, but learned that it was at the time it was occupied by Mr. Butz's family, but failed to learn whether the policies had run out since the Hoffman family had moved therein. The smoke house, near by, was also destroyed, as were also quite a number of very valuable fruit trees.
THE SECOND.
About half -past one o'clock last night a gentleman who is stopping at the Terre Plaute House, had been at a private euchre party and was returning to the hotel/and when 011 Ohio and Fifth streets, or somewhere in that vieintity, was accosted by a man who seemet^ very much excited and who told him that the Opera House was on lire, and immediately ran away.
The gentleman being a stranger here, did not know where the Opera House was located, and commenced hollowing fire! fire!! and finally succeeded in alarming several parties, and coming towards Main street he observed a small light and smoke, when he rushed in the rear of the Opera House and thus, with others, discovered several low wooden out buildings almost against the wall of that mammoth structure to be on fire. By this time the wild alarm of fire was being wafted out upon the still night air, and was caught up by many tongues and the fire bells were soon tolling throughout the city, which alarm was promptly responded to by the Fire Department, and the steamers were soon at the scene of action and in a few minutes the flames, the brilliancy ol' which was beginning to illuminate the city, were under complete control, and the Opera House was out of danger. The buildings belonged to the Cincinnati House and Theater Comique, and were of no considerable loss, and we believe uninsured.
The fire is supposed to be the work of an incendiary who will in all probability escape the ends of justice. We are thankful that the beautiful Opera House is not in ruins, as every citizen of Terre Haute should be, and doubtless is.
OPERA HOUSE.
Grammar School Exhibition. Every seat in the large and magnificent Opera House was tilled from orchestra to upper gallery not only last evening upon the occasion of the exhibition given by the Grammar School thereat, but every foot of available standing room was occupied. It was decidedly the largest audience that ever assembled in that most beautiful temple of amusement. Never were we more pleasurably surprised than upon last evening, when we entered the beautiful structure and noted the interest our citizens are beginning to feel in the welfare of the public schools of our prosperous and beautiful little city. We hazard the assertion that there were but few families in the city not represented at the exhibition last evening. People of "all ages, sexes and conditions in life" were present from the liighestand the lowest ranks of society, each and every individual manifesting a deep interest in the evidences of budding youug genius that greeted them during the evening's entertainment.
The performance far exceeded the expectations of the audience, but owing to the number participating, and the excellent manner in which each acquitted his or herself in rendering their part in the programme, we refrain from personal mentimi, believing that to mention one in a more favorable light than another would engender bitter motives and defeat one of the ends for which the entertainment was designed and carried out so harmoniously. A handsome sum must have been realized from the receipts of the evening.
WHAT MCELFRESH & Co. DID FOR Us.—A few days since one of the finest presses in the GAZETTE office was accidentally broken and it was thought it would necessarily have to be sent to New York for repairs, but McElfresh & Co., of the Phoenix Foundry insisted that they could repair it just as well as it could be done in New York, and their establishment being a home institutionj we preferred to patronize that, and allowed them to make the repairs, which they did in the most satisfactory manner, as it is now as good as new, and we have no doubt in much better condition than had we sent it to New York. We would advise all of our readers to patronize home institutions whatever they be. It pays, antl especially is this true in this case. This enterprising firm are prepared to do all such work on short notice, and in the most satisfactory manner
THERE will be interesting exercises at Dowling Hall next Thursday afternoon, incident to the dedication of the new hall of Fort Harrisons Lodge of the I. O. O. F. Rev. B. G. Foster, P. G. M., of Indianapolis, will deliver the dedicatory address. Brienig's Band and the Odd Fellows' Choir will furnish the music. The exercises will commence promptly at 2 P. M. It is hoped that there will be a large attendance.

THE following method of divorce seems easy enough for the most "advanced thinker" on that subject. TO T1IE TRADE.
.••i-S'j
In returning my thanks to the trade for their liberal patronage in the past, and soliciting a continuance of the same, I beg leave to state that, having made extensive addition to my works, and increased facilities, I am now prepared to fill orders with promptness and dispatch.
The VINEGAR which I manufacture from cider and distilled spirits is entirely PURE, and FREE FROM ALL MINERAL ACIDS OR OTHER POISONOUS INGREDIENTS SO FREQUENTLY USED IN ITS MANUFACTURE. It is both clear and of beautiful color, and made from the be6t and most wholesome material. I warrant it to keep pickleg liotft clear anil fresh for years, thus milking their consumption not only agreeable, but healthy.
Owing to the popularity and increasing demahd for my Vinegar, I shall hereafter, for the better protection of myself and my trade, in addition to my well-known brands, use also a "TRADE MARK," and all persons are hereby cautioned against using the same, and I shall prosecute any and all parties so doing to the full extent of the law. Country merchants can obi tain my brands of
Pure Cider, White Wine, Double and Triple Vinegar,
Of any ol the Wholesale Grocers of the city. Having been established but comparatively a short time, I yet have, by the manufacture of a superior article, created a demand which has warranted rae in the erection of the largest works of it« kind to be found in the United States, and having the same now thoroughly systematized, I am enabled not only to give a better and purer, but also a cheaper article to the public than any other known manufacturer. Price list furnished on application.
