THE RING.
(ir.inil Ratification— Democratic City Convention—What- it Did.
The Democratic City Nomiuation Convention convened and was called to order last Saturday evening in accordance with a previous announcement and the nominees of the ring were ratified.
The Convention was called to order by Pat Shannon, and upon his motion Dr. E. Read was made Chairman, who brielly addressed the delegates, upon taking the chair. He was desirous that everything done in the convention and canvass should be done harmoniously, etc.
T. Anderson was selected to act as Secretary of the meeting, and the roll of delegates was called, when it was found that the wards were all represented.
A motion to adopt the two-thirds vote of nominating was defeated, and the nominations proceeded in the following order:
John W. Wade was put in nomination
for
ASSESSOR,
which was made unanimous, there being none other "trotted out." Marcus Scluemelil was nominated by

And John 13. Tolbert was declared the nominee of the Convention for City Clerk. Upon motion the Chair appointed the following gentlemen as members of the
DEMOCRATIC CENTRAL COMMITTEE.
First Ward—J. B. Otcy. Second Ward—Patrick Shannon. Third Ward—B. F. Havens. Fourth Ward—Jas. B. Edmunds. Fifth Ward—C. A. Inibrey. Tn response to loud calls for Mayor Cookerly, that dignitary came out, and made a few remarks, in winch he endeavored to inspire them with the importance of standing by the old Democratic party, etc. At the close of his remarks, Dan. Crowe, John B. Tolbert and M:\reus Schoemehl were called out, and each excused himself like the Little Giant, General Grant, by saying that they couldn't make speeches. The Convention, having duly ratified the nominees of the ring then adjourned.

TIIE OCTOROON.
The last, appearance of Miss Fanny B. Price at the Opera House for the late engagement, .Saturday evening, was greeted with an immese audience, a fitting evidence of the merit of the series of entertainments which have been worthily patronized. We cannot give any account of the play or the acting on that occasion, as we were absent at Indianapolis, and only know that there was a large audience by hearing every person commenting upon the large audience present that evening and how the entertainments- grew in interest and how as a natural result the patronage increased at a rapid rate each entertainment until the beautiful Opera Hall was almost full the last evening.
We were at the matinee in the afternoon, however, and pronounce it the largest matinee of the season, and the play tiie best one and better rendered than any other matinee entertainment ever given in our ciiy.
The company was a success here throughout. While some of the pieces were the reverse of new and to our taste, there was enough of real merit in each when the excellent acting was considered to justify the liberal patronage accorded the management during the engagement. The company left tor I^aFayette at midnight last night, where they will give a series of dramatic entertainments this week. May success ever attend them, is the wish of many friends made during their recent engagement in this city. tiii: orKRA.
Another rush was made for reserved seats to the grand opera of II Trovatore, to be given at the Opera House to-morrow evening by the Grand English Opera Combination of Ricliings-Bernard-Parepa Rosa. The musically inclined and
di'.c
of the cities of Cincinnati and
Louisville have almost gone wild with enthusiasm and have been patronizing this unparalleled Combination since its first appearance here, to a degree unparalleled in the history of operas in those cities. Indeed, so great has been their success in those places, and especially tiie former, that they are going to return immediately after filling their pending engagement here, to that city, and commence another brilliant series of entertainments there, which is the best evidence of their claim upon public patronage those of our citizens could have who were not fortunate enough to be present upon-the occasion of their first appearance. Those who were there need no recommendation but will attend from knowledge of the worth of the entertainment.
GETTING READY.—To-night is the night our bellies will sleep with their "hair done up in rags" in order that their back hair will be in so perfect a state of preservation that they will present a taking appearance to-morrow evening at the grand English Opera.

SERIOUS STABCING AFFRAY.—During the prevalence of a row at a saloon on East Main street, not far from Wood ruff' this participated and hurled glass tuuableis at each other's heads in a promiscuous anner, a couple of men named Patrick McGoroni, and James Polk, became involved in a hand-to-hand encounter, which resulted in Polk stabbed McGoroni twice in the back and once in the arm, quite severely, though not necessarily fatally. The police were soon on the ground, but no arrests have as yet been made as there was so much confusion that it wa3 next to impossible to get the right men into custody, as the others would not inform on them and the officers could not make sure of the parties. It will be duly investigated. The officers are now on the rijrht track, and no doubt bring all the offenders to justice.
