MARSHAL WHITEMAX is to erect a handsome brick residence on lot No. 14, Wilson's addition. We congratulate the Marshal.

THEstyle of bonnet to be adopted by our fashionable ladies for the summer was worn by Miss Mellie Dennin ("Miss Corney") at the opera last evening.

THE new school buildings arc elcgaut and commodious structures, and reflect much credit upon all those who have been instrumental in their being erected.

INDIANAPOLIS glass dealers come to Terre Haute for bargains when they wish a first-class article, and patronize the "Terre Haute Glass Works Company."

DON'T TRY IT, GIRLS!—A drop of cologne taken on a lump of sugar is said to have all the effect of belladona in beautifying the eye without any of its njurious effects.

VALUE OF ADVERTISING.—A Chicago man who wanted a wife, advertised in the Republican, at 10 cents a line, and received replies from seventeen of the Chicago free-lovers to say he might have theirs.

DON'T forgot that the greatest event of the season will be the grand Opera on ,jiext Tuesday evening, when will be rendered the great anvil chorus, which created such a sensation at the Boston

Peace Jubilee.

FIRSTAPPEARANCE.—Mr. Harry Hapgood will make his "first appearance" before a. Terre Haute audience in the character pf "Capt. Ratts, of the steamer Magnolia," this evening. Don't fail to go and hear and see this great prodigy, for it may be the last opportunity you will ever hav«, though we hope not.

Amusements.

EAST LYNNE.

The fiftli appearance of the popular favorite, Miss Fanny B. Price, at the Opera House last evening, was greeted with a large and brilliant audience, which we consider a just tribute to the rare merit of the distinguished tragedienne and her able support. The play selected for last evening, was by request of a number of our citizens who had heard the play previously, but were not satisfied with its rendition. Miss Price represented the two characters of Lady Isabel and Madam Vine, in so charming and

4:oo P. M. excellent a manner as to be called out before the curtain repeatedly by tne enthusiastic audience, which were alternately moved to laughter and tears during the rendition of the emotional and exciting drama.

soul and faltering between purity and virtue and two of the greatest emotions that sway the human soul— jealousy and revenge—she is finally overcome by the evil, and is lost, she did the finest acting ever done before a Terre Haute audience. Her acting throughout was of the highest order and was frequently greeted with storms of well merited applause. In short, we did not see Miss Price during the evening, but we did see Lady Isabel and Madame Vine.

before him. He is an actor of high order and merit now, and when he shall have had that experience which is necessary in all professions, but particularly so in the dramatic, which perfects a man or woman in their calling, he will no doubt be one of the leading stars on the American stage. Added to his abilities as an actor he is a gentleman of high position. Wo bespeak for him a brilliant future.

The other members of the company dkl very well, especially Miss Nellie Dennin, who personated Miss Corney, the old maid sister of Sir Archibald. As an old maid she was-a decided success, no doubt being fitted for that particular character, both by age and experience.

She created much mirtlifulness during I the rendition of her part of the play.

Levison might have been decidedly improved upon, but time and .space forbids that we make further personal mention.

This afternoon "The Long Strike" is being presented to a very nattering house, consisting largely of ladies and children, and to-night Miss Price and her excellent company will make their last appearance at the Opera House for the present engagement, upon which occasion will be presented the intensely interesting drama of the "Octoroon," in which Miss Price will appear as "Zoe" the octoroon, and Mr. Con. T. Murphy will personate Wah-no-tee, while Mr. Harry Hapgood will make his lirst appearance before a Terre Haute audience in the character of Capt. Eatts, which entertainment will close the very successful season of six nights and one matinee with which our people have been so highly favored to their entire satisfaction.

THE GRAND OPERA.

A few more choice seats can be secured at B. G. Cox's book store for the grand opera of II Trovatore, which wiil be rendered at the Opera House in this city on nextTusday evening, by the great mammoth English Opera Combination. Any one who loves music and fails to be present on that eventful occasion, will miss the event of the season, and weii may they live a life of regret, for it may never be the good fortune of any of our citizens to attend so grand an opera as that of the liiching-Bernard-ParepaBosa Combination. There are seven or eight of the finest singers in the world in the troupe besides which each member of the Oombination is first-class. There will be delegations by excursion trains on all the roads leading to the city, and certainly there are none of our citizens who love music will stay at home when so many are ceming from a distance.

The price of tickets is only half so much as to the Nilsson concert, and the entertainment will be at least two per cent, more interesting and entertaining. Let every seat be filled from fcrchestra to the upper gallery.

PERSONAL MENTION.—Mr. A. Kerz, of the firm of Herz & Arnold, arrived home from the East this morning. He came to Indianapolis in the train to which was attached the special car containing President Grant. He says the train was three hours behind time, because of the great rush rhade by the people along the route to see himself and Mr. Grant. He says the enthusiastic demonstrations were very flattering to himself and Mr. G. all along the route. Mr. Kerz had his right arm in a sling from the excessive handshaking.

Mr. Perry Huston, the young, though able manager of the Terre Haute House, arrived home from Cincinnati this morning, where he has been a day or two on business connected with that popular hotel.

Mr. D. S.Leuigau, of Springfield, Ohio, representing the Falcon Iron and Nail Works, is at the Terre Haute House.
