THE man who tried to sweeten his tea with one of his wife's smiles has "fallen back" on sugar. Nothing like first principles, after all.
MR. CKOMO'S PICPURS."—A gushing young damsel, from Paris, Illinois, called at B. G. Cox's book store yesterday and inquired for "one of them, are picture made by Mr. Cromo."
FRED MCAVOY called at this ofllce this morning, and in a loud voice proclaimed that he does not owe a cent in this city— that he has paid ali his bills. We congratulate those to whom he was indebted*
THE great circus oue week from to-day. Of course the city will be crowded on that day. We have no idea that the mamoth canvasses that will be erected by that most enterprising of all showmen, John Robinson, will hold all who attend.
THE OPERA.—Of cou.se everybody in Torre Haute and vicinity who can appreciate a first-class opera, will attend the great English opera at the Opera House in this city to-morrow evening. From present indications there will be a large attendance. It well deserves it.
TRAIN IS COMING.—We were favored with a long communication from that mostexceutric and brilliant of American orators, George Francis Train, last evening, in which he "slops over" with his prospects for the Presidency in 1S72, as the people's candidate. He reminds us that he is coming to Terre Haute again.
MR. ORTON HESS, oue of the managers of the English Opera Combination, and who was taken so violently sick, of which mention was made in Yesterday's GAZETTE, was not so well this morning, and he is becoming very despondent, though his brother is here with him. He was taken sick Monday, instead of Saturday.
THE Normal School is a success already this term. There is every prospect of there being a larger attendance Hhan even the most hopeful and sanguine expect, all of which speaks well ""-management. We feel assured teachers better underlie

THE GRAND ENGLISH OPERA COMBINATION. To-morrow evening the completest opera combination that now travels the country, will make a first and only appearance in the Opera House in thiscity, upon which occasion all who are fortunate enough to be in attendance will be favored with the most excellent entertainment of the brilliant season of entertainments now closing, aud which it has been our good fortune to be favored with. Several first-class operas are combined in this one which has been greeted with crowded and delighted houses in all the great cities of the Union, in most all of which they have given a series of entertainments, and always with an increasing interest and large and brilliant audiences.
We have no doubt but that this will be the most enjoyable entertainment of the season and it is well worthy of the patronage of our people, and we have full faith that there will be an immense audience from the number of reserved seats already sold and the way they are now being aold.
The reason the Combination has not. been more thoroughly advertised, we stated yesterday, one of the managers, Mr. Orton Hess, came to the city to make all the necessary arrangements and wa3 taken violently sick and was being cared for in the kindliest manner at Deck's boardinghouse, though the inmates did not know who he was, and he never regained consciouness until yesterday, when he immediately telegraphed his brother and wife the fact of his situation. His brother, Mr. C. D. Hess, Manager aud principle proprietor, arrived this morning and is making every effort to perfect arrangements for the appearance of the troupe to-morrow evening.
The company opened out at Springfield, Illinois last evening for a season of two night, and were greeted with about as large and brilliant an audience as the peerless Nilsson waa at the same place some time since, though her great worldwide reputation and the long suspense in which the people were kept, and the length of time she was advertised did much towards giving her the finest and largest audience that ever greeted an entertainment in Illinois outside of Chicago. We presume the same will be the case here. Let there be a large attendance for we feel assured that no entertaiument that has ever visited our city is or ever was more deserving than the English Opera Combination. The sale of reserve seats commenced at B. G. Cox's book store this morning with flattering results. The popular prices of seats place them within the reach of all. For particulars consult advertisement in our amusement column.
HARRY MCCARTHY AS A SHOOTIST.— Harry McCarthy, and the Dep ty City Clerk of Indianapolis, named John G. Waters, got into an altrication yesterday near the residence of the latter, growing out of a difficulty between those gentlemen, in regard to a partition fence, NcCarthy had been on a spree the previous evening and came home in a very quarrelsome mood, and getting into a skirmish of words with Mr. Waters, the two were soon engaged in a lively little mill, both parties "going to grass" with Mac uuderneath, who soon bellowed enough after having his left optic set in full and beautiful mourning by a judicious application of the right "iuauler" of his antagonist. Mr. Waters. Upon Mac's cryingout that he had enough allowed him to get up, but upon attempting to go to his resideLce, McCarthy shot him twice, the first shot taking effect, by striking him on the collar bone, but glaucing off without doing material damage, and the wounded man walked on aud entered his own house without assistance. McCarthy was arrested and taken before Mayor McCauley who fixed his bond at $2,000, which he promptly gave. The affair caused a great deal of excitement.
THE COURTS.—The Circuit Court, Hon. C. Y. Patterson, presiding, convened this morning pursuant to yesterday's adjournment, and several appeal cases were heard, some of which were decided and others taken under advisement by the Court. No cases of general interest were disposed of, or placed on trial. The Court, at noon, adjourned until 2 o'clock P. M., and is now in session.
The Criminal Court, Hon. Thomas B. Long presiding, also convened this A. M., but there being no cases ready for trial, adjourned until to-morrow morning at nine o'clock, by which time the Grand Jury will probably have worked up some cases for disposal as that body is busily engaged hatching out trouble for the offenders of our majestic laws.
The Mayor's Court, Hon. G. F. Cookerly presiding only had one case for disposal, which was that of a "drunken dead beat" who was discharged as a uuisance, after having enjoyed the hospitalities of the Station House all night.
To BUSINESS MEN.—Let our business and public spirited men not forget the meeting at the Terre Haute House this evening, which is called for the purpose of taking measures to provide for the entertaining of "the members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science," which society will excurse to this city during the sitting of their convention, which assembles at Indianapoon the 19th of August. Let all those whose names were published in the Express be on hand, and as many others as possible.
... TUELL, RIPLEY & DEMING have on hand one of the largest stocks aud best assortments of goods that has ever been brought to this city, but at the rates at which they are disposing of said stock, Mr. Ripley had better be packing his carpet-bag" for another trip to the East, as their numerous and capacious shelves will soon need replenishing again, for all they are almost breaking down at present, all of which speaks well for the firm.
To HORTICULTURISTS.—'There will be a regular monthly meeting of the Vigo County Horticultural Society at the residence of Mr. Theodore Hulman, near the Providence Hospital, to-morrow at 10 o'clock. A large attendance is desired, not only of members of the society, but all thos« who feel an interest in Horticulture.
HOTEL PERSONALS.—John P. Usher, late Secretary of the Interior President Ingle, of the E. & T. R. President Collett, of the E., T. H. & C. R. R. John E. Simpson, Superintendent of the T. H. & I. R. R., and ex-Mayor Eaton, of Mattoon, were at the Terre Haute House last evening.
"THE SILVER SHOW."—Another crowded house greeted the "Silver Show" aud "Slight of Hand" performance at Dowling Hall last evening, and many a soul was made glad upon the receipt of some magnificent present. The livliest satisfaction was given, both as to the entertainment and the distribution of prizes. This evening will be presented the third evening's entertainment, and many gorgeous presents.
