This morning at eleven o'clock the accused was brought into the Mayor's Court, and John Combs testified that he, in company with the accused and a man named Gillerease, were going out to the Blast Furnace, where they were endeavoring to get the accused employment that himself and Gillcrea.-e were walkingalongahead of the accused, who was also accompanied by-his son, a lad of some ten summers that Stewart was intoxicated that when passing
along not far from the old canal basin, where several boys were fishing, the son of the accused got into a difficulty with the boys, which resulted in throwing stones, and one of the boys named Hall proposing to fight young Stewart, the accused urging his own son on, and in reply to Combs, when he insisted on him, and his son following, said that he wished to learn his boy to fight. Witness testified that he heard pistol shots, and saw smoke, and turning around disced*ered the accused coming toward him with a small revolver in his hand, and tie boys running the other way. Witness further stated that he was not aware that the accused had shot any one until the ajpearance of Officer Vandever, when he made the arrest that he took the pistol from Stewart and tried to get him away from there, and get him sobered oft* and when he saw the officer approaching, only supposed that he intended arresting the accused for firing on the boys that lie was not aware that Stewart had shot any of the boys, that he believed he had fired his pistol into the ground just to scare them.
Dr. Mahan was next examined, and testified that he had dressed the wounds of the injured boy, taking therefrom a small bullet, which was flattened against the skull, making a small indention thereon, and then having penetrated the membrane, injuring it to a considerable extent, but that, tne wound was not a dangerous one if properly cared for.
The boy, Thomas Blannett, was present and was called as the first witness but. owing to the excitement in the court room, he was not able to detail the affair. Upon being called at this stage of the proceedings, he gave in his statement in a clear tone and tliecoolest manner imaginable of one of his age. He stated that he did none of the throwing that when the firing commenced he ran, and upon looking back, was struck in the forehead with one of the balls, which penetrated through his hat which was doubled down at the corners producing a stinging sensation. [Here the hat was produced and the hole perforated by the ball shown the boy placing the hat upon his head as it was when the shot was fired.] Witness stated that he guessed the accused was the man who did the shooting, but that he had never seen him before or since until -then, lie further statedt hat he was a considerable distance from the man when he was shot. The little fellow is only about eleven years of age, and a is remarkably bright and intelligent lad.
Mr. Blannett, the father of the won sided boy, was next called and sworn, and stated that the shooting took place Wednesday of this week, between the hours of 10 and 11 A. M.
Officer Vandever, who made the arrest, was next called, and produced the revolver with which the shooting was done, which is a small seven-chambered one, carrying No. 1 Smith & Wesson cartridge, though not of that manufacture, being the "Dead Shot," but it happily failed to be a dead shot in this case. Six cartridges had been discharged and one remained in the chamber.
Vandever stated that another one of the party of boys was struck by one of the balls, which passed alongside of his head cutting the skin and causing him to shed some of his hair but the boy was not present and the State waived any further testimony in the case. The defense proposed to oiler testimony as to the inability of the prisoner to give large bail, but was assured by His Honor, Mayor Cookerly, that he would iix his bail at $1,000. Counsel for the defense waived further testimony, and the accused was committed in default of bail, to await the action of the Grand Jury. B. F. Havens, Esq., conducted the case for the State, and Richard Dunnigan conducted the defense.
The principal prosecuting witness was also held to bail in the sum of $1.00, for his appearance before the Criminal Court as a witness in behalf the State. This man Stewart is a desperate character and is continually indulging in drunken revels and getting into trouble. It was this same Stewart who bit the finger off" of the poor insane man at the Station House, one night not long since, and it has been reported to us that a gentleman in trying to get him home the night before shooting this boy, was shot at by him and narrowly escaped being struck. He is a regular desperado when in liquor, and the safety of the community demand that he be restrained.
STREET IMPROVEMENTS. Commissioner Purdy, with characteristic energy and commendable zeal, is h? earnest about improving our streets. To-day he has a force of twelve men cleaning out the gutters on South Sixth street, one of the number being a dead beat, who is working out a fine which was assessed in the Mayor's Court. The dirt from these gutters is hauled and throwu in upon streets that are to be graded and repaired, so that when the proper time comes for their grading, apart of the desired material will be in place. Major Purdy, as is his custom, is present in person, and the work is supervised by him in his own watchful and excellent way.
This good work will continue until our city shall be greatly beautified by the handsome and neat appearauce of our streets. Let the good work progress.
MAYORALITV.—The time is drawing near for the nomination df city officers, and there are many candidates already in the field, and among the rest we have heard many influential Republicans mention the name of Geo. C. DuyJ in connection with the office of Mayor, and if he would consent to run, can make a good race, and if elected, would make a Mayor tluU our city would be proud of.
Ax Ex-EDITOR.-—Themis au ex-editor and dead beat now working out a fine on the streets, which his cussed impecuniosity, superinduced by his uncontrollable appetite for whisky, will not admit of his liquidating. He is said to be oue of the most rapid compositors of the profession, and was at one lime an editor of market! ability, and now is an outcast from one of the first families of East Pennsylvania. His case should be a warning to ail who are moderately addicted to the use of intoxicating liquor for of three cases out of five, there is just about where the end is. There is but one safe rule to go by, and that is "touch not, taste not, handle not, enter not into temptation." Young men beware.

GKSTLHMKN: Herewith wo submit to you a copy of our annual report, made to the lioard ol'County Commissioners oil the 8th instant. From this you will see the Lo total amount of tuition fund on hund and received during the liscal vear was £27,WO 0U The total amount expend tl on account of said fund for teacher*'salaries was 22,202 50
Leaving the balance of tuition hind on hand §5,787 50 The total number of teachers in our own schools at the present time are forty-two nine males and thirty-three female teachers. The Board at the commencement ol the present school year tried the experiment for the ii.st time of in ourcity, ot placing females as principals iu some oi the schools, and they are happy to state that the result has been most satisfactory, and the schools now under the control oi these principals are equal in all respccts to the schools under the charge of our best male teachers, both in discipline and educational advancement. This action of the Board has not only had these results in this particular, but it has created a spirit ol'energy and rivalry among our female teachers to advance the character of their schools, and to acquire for themselves advancement and promotion.
The total number of scholars enrolled iu our schools at the opening last cjeptember and since h.is been 2,827, and the average number enrolled is .2,201, and the total number of daily attendance has been 2,104, showing 95 fj per cent, of an averago daily attendance during the school year, up to this date.
This we believe shows as good an attendance as any of the schools in Itiuiana. The total amount ot special school fund receive I during the year was§28,339.41).
The total amount expended was as follows: Paid C. Rose's note and in to rest MO,201 50 iJaid Mclveeu & Minsliall's note and interest 5,00'J 00 [These two items were loai^s made by fo former Hoards. Total -.WO.Ol'J 43 To meet this expenditure there is now on the tax duplicate including the delinquency of 1SU9, the sum of ^24,5 ,0 lo.
Of this sum the Board confidently believe there will be realized the sum of 22 000 00 Leaving an indebtednessfor the close of the year 1871-72 of. $0,019 43
The Board believe that the rate of taxation for the coming year, to-wit: 25 cents will be ample to pay all our indebtedness as it becomes due and leave ample means to meet the ordinary expenses of the schools.
Thesehool houses are now all in good repair and but little expense on them will be required for the coming year.
The new'school houses are now nearly completed and we trust will be ready lor occupancy early in April. As soon as completed, the Board will present you a statement of the cost and all expenditures on the same. The Board is happy to state that the cost ot of the buildings proper will fall short of tne amount of the §40,000 borrowed for that purpose, and they hope that the houses complete, with furniture, heating apparatus, will be nearly met by this fund.
The schools were never in a more prosperous condition than they are to-day. Too much praise cannot be bestowed upon Prof. \V. H. Wiley, ourefficientSuperintendent, tor the able and satisfactory manner in which he has managed the schools, and the able and efficient corps of teachers who have aided and assisted in all his efforts to advance the interest and prosperity of our public schools.
The Board desire to return to you all. their unqualified thanks for the aid and support you have always given us in our undertakings to advance the interest and usefulness of our schools «nd we feel confident that a generous public will bestow upon you their hearty commendation for these, among your noblest acts.
