In the late interuicine war, Colonel Job Stout carried the pig skin wallet through several engagements, and when he fell at Richmond, the historical wallet of Bilgrim skin was perforated with bullets and saturated with blood. A Curious Legend.
When Adam was far advanced in years, and at the point of death, he sent J)is son to the angel Michael, who kept the gate of Paradise, to pray for the oil of mercy so that he could be healed. The angel answered that it could not be until fifty-live hundred years, but he gaveSeth a brauch of the tree of which Adam had eaten, bidding him plant it on Mount Lebau»n, and that when it bore iruit his father shoulu be healed. Seth planted the branch on his father's grave it took roof and grew, and from it were ule Aaron's rod, and Moses' staff, with which lie struck the rock and sweetened the w.iters of irah. it also formed the pole on which the brazeu serpent was lifted, and the ark of the testimony.
At last it came into the hands of Solomon, who used it in building his palace, but it contiuually resisted the etlorts 01 the builders to adjust it. Now it was too long and then again too short. The builders being angry, then threw it into a marsh so that, it might serve as a bridge. The Qu oa of Sheba would not walk upon it, but adored it, and told Solomon that upon it should be sus peuded the m*u thrjugh whose death the kingdom should be destroyed.
Soloin then had buried it deep in the ground, where afterward the pool ol Bethsaida was dug, and from the virtues of this tree, healing properties were imparted to the waters. After it had been buried three hundred years, it rose to the surface of the water, and the Jews took it and made of it the cross of our Saviour.

The Oddest Funeral on Record. A few days ago it became the painful duty of a well-known sexton to commit to its last resting place the mortal remains of one who died far away from home and kindred. The unfortunate, in obedience to an earnest solicitation mule prior to hia demise, had been disinterred, and brought from Texes, to be placed by the side of tho-e of his r'aitli and race. Tne sexton, being a conscientious man, complied with his duty strictly, and the ceremonies are described as having been most impressive. About the same time a well known dry goods merchant received a lecter from his brother, residing in Indianola, informing him of the shipment of a case of dress patterns which he desired to have sold for his account. The articles did not arrive, but in due time the freight bill was preseuted and payment was declined. The agent insisted that he could show a recept, and produced one, which, however, was signed by the sexton alluded to. The gentlein was called up n, but, wuile he admitted the signature of the receipt bore a remarkable resemblance to his own, he had 110 knowledge whatever of tha goods. Mentioning casually that about the sume time he liad received a corpse, an investigation was determined on. In company with the sexton, the gentleman vi.-.ited the cemetery and discovered th it the dress itt^rm had been buried with funeral honors. The goods are, of course, ruined utterly, and the corpse has not yet arrived. But the joke is considered worth twice the value of the invoice.
A Historic Hog Skin.
Colonel Job Stout, Recorder of Hardin •county, Iowa, has a wonderful pocket book,"according to this from the Eldorado Ledger: "It was made of pig skin, dressed by one of the Pilgrim fathers, and manufactured into its present shape by himself. It was from the back of the first hog slain by the colonists. A forefather of Colonel' rttout's carried the pig skin wallet through the French war and the Indian, and was shot beside the brave General Wolf on the bloody bights of Abraham, iu September, 175U. The pocket-book, containing some English coin, found its way back to the right family, and held nothing but English coin and Bank of Euglanp notes until the Revolutionary war. Colonel Stout's grandfather marched with it on his person to Canada with General Montgomery. It was at Stillwater ferried the Delaware at the memorable Trenton surprise, and when peace was declared, con'taiued $2,000 of Continental currency, most of which its present owner retains.
Extinct Family. •_
Is is a curious fact that there are known descendants of Christopher Col umbus. He had two sons, one of whom Don Diego, rose to distinction as an Admiral, and the other, Fernando, wa9 a eat traveler. He not only thrice visited America, but subsequently traversed the whole of Europe, and every accessible portion of Asia and Africa. He appears to have been a pro found scholar and a thoroughly good, man. In his will he stipulated that his library, containing twenty thousand volumes, which, be gave to the Cathedral of Seville, should be free to the peopie, and itis to this day. From books in this collection, the late Washington Irving obtained a considerable portion of the

A Cataplasm of Rhubarb
AID upon the pit of the stomach of a child will cause the bowels to be emptied, and aiioes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons ttow the operation of croton oil when placed^pon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are in curable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This has at last been done.

Helmintliology.
A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven tomadessbyan almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The history of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men, their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them trom the human sytem.

Dr. Laennec.
This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affectiousof the air passages still he lelt but few words concerning their treatment. The youngI est physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilders Compound Extract oj Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use of this truly great medicine he is fully master of the situation He has no fear in the presence of croup, 110 misgivings at the advance of bronchitis lie grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or©itarrh. Hence every lauiily should always li»ve this invaluable medicine at hand.
Indigestion,
"Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been tlie most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be-read by him who is skilled iu the book of nature. It is self evident that the ditl'erent forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues uneeasiugly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder1!! Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distil led whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, ihe remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality 01 tlie disorder by a corresponding speciality ol cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family tliey are indispensable to health

The three great actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tilo, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy.
