BARB'S PECTORAL ELIXIR.—In going our rounds this morning in search items We wandered into the mammoth establishment ofT. H."Barr & Co., patentees and manufacturers of this most excellent remedy for throat and lung diseases, and which is creating*'such a sensation all over the country, by the wonderful cures which it has and is daily effecting. The establishment is located in the large, handsome and magnificent McGregor block on Main street, between First and Second.
We first entered the office and found one of our most responsible and wellknown businessmen, Mr. H. B. Jones, general manager of the business of the establishment, assisted by a large and able corps of book-beepers and assistants. Here we met Messrs. L. P. Harper, formerly agent of Perry Davis Pain Killer, and D. P. Templeton, formerly agent for the mammoth drug house of A. P. Sands, New York, both of whom resigned their positions for the purpose of accepting an agency with T. H. Barr & Co., upou learning of the great merits of the preparation. We immediately engaged their services to show us around, and through the courtesy of these accomodating and pleasant gentlemen, we were shown into the laboratory where we found an army of workmen under the management of Mr. Henry McMahan, busily engaged in manufacturing, bottling, stamping, "boxing up" and shipping to all parts of the country (where it has been introduced,) this great preparation. We were next shown into their large and well arranged warehouse, where we found unlimited storage room, but owing the heavy orders recently fille.I was not more than half full. We give below a short history of the medicine: It was first invented and prepared by Mr. T. H. Barr, head of the great wholesale drug house of Barr, Gulick & Berry, of this city, about twelve years since, but owin'g to his time being so much taken up as the head of a great business, he did not make that effort to introduce his great discovery throughout the world, until the demand for the article became so great that he was obliged to abandon all else and make its manufacture a specialty With this view, he established the manufactory which we visited this morning and commenced its preparation on a grand scale, on a heavy capital of his own, backed by the heaviest capitalists of the country. Mr. Barr has been a resident of the city sixteen years, and is known as a most upright and honorable man and Christian gentleman and is one of the mast highly respected men in our city, being recognized and appreciated as such by all who know him, not only here but elsewhere, and added to his other qualities, he is known as one of the best chemists in the country, while his name and fame is spreading daily, and Barr's Pectorial Elixir is recommended in the highest terms by the press, ministry and physicians of the entire country where it has been introduced. It is recommended by our own most reliable citizens, and is without doubt the most worthy ot a trial of any medicine that has ever been offered to a suffering humanity. T. H. Barr & Co., are just awakening to the great benefits they are conferring upon the human race, and with characteristic enterprise, are going to let the world know what they have, and are now advertising in almost one thousand newspapers, and have engaged Messrs. Harper and Templeton, two of the livest men in the business, as general traveling agents. May success attend their efforts, and the "world will be the better for it."
DIDN'T KNOW HER AGE.—Not long since a handsome and well-dressed gen tleman, evidently having withstood the storms of thirty winters, called at the Clerk's office and signified his wish to take out a marriage license. Mr. Hollinger being absent, Mr. Black waited upon the gentleman and asked him how old the lady was whom he wished to marry. He answered that "for the life of him, he didn't know." He then inquired for Mr. Hollinger, saying that Mr. H. knew her better than he did, and would probably knew her age. Many people will think that their courtship has been a short one, or lie would have known her age but a bachelor friend, to whom we related this strange circumstance, informs us. that a man may court a woman for years and never learn iier age that heWlirted one for several years and she always told her friends that she was but eighteen, when he was confidently informed by her rival, who had stolen and consulted the family Bible, that she was just twenty-eight when he was introduced to her and commenced the siege of her heart. Such is life.
THE BURLESQUERS.—The "Blondes' made their fourth and last appearance at the Opera House in this city Saturday evening, and were greeted with quite a large audience. The entertainment was not so good as the first evening, though better than the second. "Ernani" is without doubt the best play they give.
ilLa
Sonnambula" and "Lurline" were faithfully burlesqued, but were not so interesting as "Ernani."
The troupe left the city for Chicago at two o'clock P. M. yesterday,* by special train to Effingham, where they took the regular train for Chicago, which is due at that city this morning. To-night they commence a series of seven entertainments at Crosby's Opera House, where they will no doubt have crowded houses at each entertainment, for the Chicago people are partial to the leg-drama.
THE CHAMPION BITIST of this city is a fellow named Stewart, who was placed in the Station House last evening by officer Vaijdever. charged with drunkenness. He was assigned quarters in the same room with a crazy man who had been lodged there because he had no means, or place to sleep. After Stewart had been in their long enough to begin to "sober off," he went for the.crazy man like a hyena, and bit his thumb and ear in a horrible manner, and it was found necessary to call iu a surgeon. This morning Stewart was fined and co3ted $7 for drunkenness, *&nd$6 for assaulting the crazy mau. His wife
