THE week that has just passed has been one of unusual activity in the matrimonial business.
PREPARATIONS are being made by our Irish fellow-citizens to celebrate St. Patrick's day in this city.
THERE were only four "public sales" yesterday, within a radius of twelve miles of this city that WG know of. Several points remain yet to be heard from.
"VACANT business rooms" are getting to be a common thing oa Alain street.— Journal,
Another attack from "Jeeuis" oil the prosperity of our city.
UNTRUE—The rumor so currently reported about the streets this morning that the Blast Furnace was out of order. It is in splendid wyrkng order, and "red hot." _______
TIIE matrimonial services at Centenary Church, last evening, resulted in William A. Armstrong and Lydia Parsons being made "bone of one bone and flesh of one flesh."
THOSE four hairs that a certain young gent of this city cultivates with so much care, and calls a mustache-ah, are, when taken in connection with his back hair, are "pawfectly stunning-ali."
MESSRS. HAVENS & FARIS, Insurance Agents, have removed their office from opposite the Municipal Court rooms, over Pat Shannon's Bank, where they will continue the business as heretofore.
MISS ADELAIDE PHILLIPPS, who sings at the Opera House, in this city, tonight, is to be the principal contralto at the triennial festival of the Handal and '"Hayden Society, in Boston next May, which is a most distinguished honor.
THEATER COMIQUE was large attended lasteveuing, and an excellent programme was satifactorily performed, and was frequently applauded. Open each evening, with ail entire change of programme. On Monday, March 1st, three new faces will appear.
IT IS the proper thing now, with newspaper bores, to wear large cloaks, under which they can, unobserved, pack enough fresh exchanges to stuff a family mattress. It i3 further proper to call very day—any omission might be regretted Ivy the printers.
"ANOTHER turn of the screw" brings us another double-column "adv" from the great dry goods merchants, Foster & Bros. This enterprising firm have added several new features to their ^^%rade, one of which is an enlargement of their notion department. As increased facilities always increases custom, it teems evident that this spirited firm will have to enlarge their store room at no distant clay.
ASSAULT WITH INTENT TO KILL. Last evening about seven or eight o'clock, while Mr. Alexander Thompson, a quiet citizen who drives an express wagon for a livelihood, was quietly milking his cow in an alley near his residence, a man nametf Samuel Tapscott, who resides in Illiiiois, but who has been visiting in thia'ity for some time, strucK him a tremendous blow across the face with a spade or dirt.shovel, inflicting a dangerous and painful wound, cutting through the bridge of his nose and cutting a terrible gash under his eyes. Tapscott then ran, but the alarm being given, several officers started in hot pursuit, and the would-be assassin was overhauled at the Union depot, where he had boarded a train, by Chief of Police Crowe who discovered him on the platform of the baggage car. When the Chief arrested him, he denied that his name wus Tapscott, but when the Chiel started oil" with him, he asked if "that feller" was much hurt. He was lodged in the "tombs" for the night, and was this morning taken before
Mayor Cookerly, who, on account of the inability of the injured man to appear against him, continued his case until the 4th day of March, and the accused was held to bail in the sum of $2,000, in default of which he was committed to jail.
The wounds of the injured man were dressed by Dr. Young, who pronounced them not necessarily fatal, but said it would be a long time before he would recover.
The whole affiiir is shrouded in mystery, and there are many conflicting rumors afloat as to the cause, but it will only be cleared up by a thorough investigation. The parties were strangers to each other.
THIS.evening will be one long to be pleasantly remembered by those who are fortunate and foreseeing enough to be at the Opera House upon the occasion of the appearance of Miss Adelaide Phillipps, together with her splendid musical support. Miss 1'. has the reputation of being the finest contralto singer in the world, and Mr. .T. Levy lias no acknowledged superior as a cornet player. The members of the entire troupe are commended not only but lauded in the highest terms by the press of this country, while Miss Phiilipps and and Mr. Levy have reputations that extend all over Europe as we!!.
Let this grand concert not go by unattended, but let the beautiful Opera House be tilled with the talent, beauty and chivalry of the city. Tickets at B. G. Cox'^ book store.
A Yor.v« MAN'S VIEWS OF FASHION.— A young man with an eye to things, and who is a "highflyer at fashion," says: One of the latest wrinkles is to perfume wedding, reception and visiting cards with violet. Too much perfume may be regarded as an evidence of vulgarity. Paper petticoats are among the recently imported novelties from London. They are neat, pretty, and servicable, each and every petticoat having printed upon it a full description of the latest styles and fashions. The last novelties are evening shoes for ladies, which are made with gilt heels, and a very great deal of gilt embroidery over the instep and gilt taps to the toes. Plain hair is rapidly becoming the fashion. This kind is supposed to be peculiar to most people.
WANTED TO SEE HIS MOTHER.—An impecunious cuss, giving his name as William Lawson, and his station as Clay county, was picked up on Sixth street by Officer Vandever yesterday in a state of blissful intoxication. When aroused, he wanted the officer to take him to his "good old mother," down at Hartford. He was taken before the Mayor, who fined and costed him in the sum of $3.50, which little debt he could not liquidate, and was assigned quarters at the city hotel as a night lodger, and will be assigned to duty on the streets, until he works out his assessment.
THERE will be a festival given at tjie A. M. E. Church to-morrow night, upon which occasion it is hoped there will be a large attendance. The festival is given for the purpose of raising money to pay oft the carpenters who erected their new and beautiful church. Several of the members are also going around the city soliciting donations from the citizens for the same purpose. Any one wishing to further a good cause can do so by contributing.
MARRIAGE LICENSES.—The following is the list of marriage licenses issued during the week ending to-day:
Peter II. Leonard and Ellen C. Keller. Francis AI. Churchill and Mary F. Miller.
Wm. Fitzgerald and Mary Ring. Alonzo E. Phelaii and Emma B. Jackson.
Win. Blackey and Theresa Lebenouu. James W. Hooley and L\'dia Bland. Wm. A. Armstrong and Lydia Parsons. John Kidfiely and Elizabeth Covington. Elijah LiForge and Dora B. AleGrew. John Badger and Sarah A. Fiddler.
TO-MORKOW night Messrs. Leake & Dickson will optrn out a series of performances at Dowling Hall for a season of three nights and one matinee, with Miss Lizzie Bernard as "star." She will appear in thegreat play of Omnia, which was written for her expressly, and in which she is said to he immense. She will be supported by the Indianapolis Academy of Miidic Company. Reserved seats can be secured at B. G. Cox's book store.
Xo CASE.—Johnliilcy was arrested bv Officer Wolf this morning, on complaint of Mary Carter, charged with assaulting and battering her night before last, out near the artesian well. It was ascertained, however, that there was no evidence to sustain the case, and the accused was dismissed, Jj '-rJ™

SENT LTP.—One Alex. Riggs was up before His Honor, this morning, on a charge of associating with a woman ol bad repute and was fined and costed in the sum' of $10, in default of which he was "sent up" and will have to work it out in "grading down" thestreets. Served him right.
MASQUE BALL.—To-night is the occasion of the grand masque bail given by Toute's popular band at Dowling Hall, upon which occasion there will no doubt bean immense attendance, and one of the most enjoyable occasions of the season. The gallery will be open for spectators at twentv-live cents each.
WANTEDA "CHAGRIN."—A young lady from the counwy entered one of our notion stores yesterday and inquired for a "chagrin." Thepolite and gentlemanly clerk could not understand, whereupon "she arose to explain." Iler explanation was satisfactory to the intuitive clerk, who asked her if she didn't mean a "chignon." She said it was a name something like that.
