MESSRS. "TUNING UP."—At the concert night before last, a gentleman of "the old school" grew very impatient when Vieuxtemps was rendering one of his oim favorite airs, sand exclaimed, "I wish he would play something." FORTY-Danville ladies came to Greencastle the ether day, bringing a paper signed by 700 Danvillians, requesting John Can ley not to establish a saloon in their town. The result has not transpired.— Indianapolis Journal.
We consider that the most effectual and really ihc only way to put a stop to the whisky trafic and consequent drunkenness and death resulting therefrom. By the force of public feeling, and that only, do we believe the evil will ever be suppressed. Let the ladies form societies for the suppression of the curse, and when a man proposes to establish a saloon in their village appoint a committee to wait upon and remonstrate with him, and if he persists in his determination let the ladies forbid every young man their society that vetures inside the threshhohl of the den and thus break down his expected support and he will close out from the force of circumstances. If a young man does not think more of a noble woman's society, than he does of the low and vile associates of a doggery, then he is unworthy of her. When ladies form societies and mutually support each other, this object can be accomplished.
Ladies are not select enough in their company. Because a young mau makes a fine appearance, and wears fine clothes, they will permit his visits when they know that he oftentimes comes to them and claims their society, when he has just come from a saloon, gambling den or some worse place, and she receives him with a smile and denies a worthy young man that probably^ never was inside a saloon, gambling and other disgraceful houses in his life, because, probably, he does not make as fine an appearance, or dress so well, when at the same time Le could better al'ford it than the one who does "dress to kill," and who by his appearance goes into society where real merit is excluded. While such a state of things exist it cannot be otherwise than that the evil will grow daily, until young men will have so little to encourage them to be true to noble principles, that they will gradually drift into the current and be swallowed up in the great maelstorm of vice, which is rapidly becoming dominant over the good that is in the world.
The example of Danville's noble daughters, is worthy of emulation by the ladies of our own city or any other city or town in the land. We like to see this spirit manifested, for wre believe it the only way in which drunkenness and all its attendant wretchedness and misery in families, can be suppressed. May this society of noble women of Danville be successful, and thus set an example to the rest of the world, is our most earnest wish. We know some of the ladies of that .quiet little village, and we know that whatever they undertake that is honorable and just, (and they undertake nothing else), they succeed in and we believe that they will eventually triumph over the evil one in the shape of spirits by driving King Alcohol from their midst.
THE Adelaide Phillipps Concert bids fair to be one of the best entertainments of the season. Notwithstanding the fact that our citizens have just heard the peerless Nilsson, very many of them are going to attend this concert, havingjust become awakened to the pleasure of attending a grand musical entertainment. We clip the following from a letter in the London Times correspondence, written from Boston after a concert given by Miss Phillipps in that city, in which he speaks thusly of her:
I S S IT I S A S O S IN A
Miss Adelaido Phillipps used no strategy in her attack on the good graces ol'the audience—she carried them by a vigorous assault. From the first moment of her entrance until the fall ot the curtain, she trod the stage a conqueror, secure of her victory. In addition to the possession ol a wonderful contralto voice of surpassingly rich tone and wonderful* volume, Miss Phillipps is a consummate actress as she pours forth a flood of glorious melody—she weeps, exults all the emotions of the miijd are truthfully represented by her expressive countenance, graceful action and wondrous voice. SJie is one second choking with ei^otion, the next, her full, clear' voice rings through the house, sending an electric thrill through the souls of tjie audience, as with artistic precision, joined to inspired warmth of feeling, she'exeoute* tliciliOguitieent music of her author.
She will be assisted by the world-re-nowned cornet player, Mr. J. Levi, the great baritone, Mr, Jules D'Hasler and Mr. Edward Hoflman the distinguished pianist and composer.
The Cincinnati Times thus speaks of Mr. J. Levi, iho great cornet player. Mr. Levy fairly carried the audience by storm with the wonderful mastery he possesses over tho cornet. One never grows weary of the magic uotes which lie pours fourth from his instrument now soft arid plaintive as the llute, anon wild and stiring as the bugle's call for the last desperate charge. He is an artist whose equal we may never hear in the course of a whole life-time.
We may well expect a musical treat such as is seldom our fortune to hear. Seats at B. G. Cox's book store.
Titi: MARCH OF VICE.—That vice nml immorality iji their worst and most dan gerous forms are arehhig on with fearful rapidity, can not be otherwise than paiufully palpable to every careful reader of the public journals of the day. Pick up almost any paper you may and your eyta are greeted with the announcement ot one or more crimcs committed in different parts of the country, while the lesser vices, parentis of the former, crop out in numerous paragraphs in every part of the paper. It must be that the present is the grand carnival season of his satanic majesty, and that all the imps of darkness from the infernal regions have been turned loose upon society to riot upon the fat of g^e land, and if possible to still deeper degrade poor human kind

NEW RALLROAD FACILITIES.—1TheIndianapolis & St. Louis Railroad Company has made arrangements to run a fine passenger coach direct from Indianapolis to Springfield, Ills., running over the Springfield & Southeastern, from Pana, Ills., to Springfield, without change. The train leaves Indianapolis at 7:o0 A. M., and reaches here at 10:50 A. M. This route is very much shorter and quicker than any other route from Indianapolis and this city to Springfield.
WANTED TO SEE THE CAN-CAN.—A verdant cus3 from Rockville was in the city night before last and "got away" with something like a couple of quarts of benzine (his usual amount) which in turn "got away with him," and started down to the A. M. which was Academy of Music, but now Theater Gomique, walking on both sides of the street. Upon being accosted by Officer Vandever as to where he was going, he responded that he was going to see the can-can. Ed took him down to the city hotel, where he found an abiding place until next morning, and wl.ere he avers he was haunted by the ghosts of the cancan.
