CRIMINAL COFRT,
Hon. T. B.
I,otigpresiding, convened this morning pursuant to Saturday's adjournment, but there being no cases ready for trial, adjourned until to-morrow at the usual hour.
WE HAVE heard of several lover's quarrels in town because the young gentlemen are too economical to take their proposed "better halves" to the Xilssoii concert, on account of the high price of tickets.
THERE are few things more painful in this life .than to watch a young gentleman in the theater endeavoring to keep his refractory and stubborn hair from slopping over the dividing line in the center of his head. The agony of not knowing if your back hair is all right is nothing in comparison.
FIREMEN'S BALL.—The Steam Fire Department of this city will give its first annual ball, at the new Turner Hall, to morrow night, and from present indications will be largely attended, there being about two hundred tickets already sold. The boys know how to manage such an affair, and a pleasant time may be anticipated without fear of disappointment.
MANNEKCHOU MASQUE BALL.—Tonight will be long remembered by all who attend the grand masque ball given by the Mannerchor Club, at Dowling's Hall, with a thrill of pleasure. The ingenuity of the city has been taxed to its utmost tension in preparing costumes for the occasion, and there is every evidence that the occasion will l»e one of intense interest and pleasure.
has arrived in" the city,
and will certainly appear to-night in the character of "Mary, Queen ofScotts," a, the Opera House, supported by Mr. Frife-1 erick G. Robinson, of London fame, and the entire Indianapolis Academy of Music Company, under the management of Messrs. Leake & Dickson, the former of whom is well known and appreciated by our theater loving people. Seats to be secured at B. (it Cox's book store. Don't fail to go.
INTOLTIERABLK
OITTRAGK.—-Sun
day morning about three or four o'clock, a party of young ruffians, passing along South Third street, and being full of the spirit ofbenziueand the devil, went for the picket fences in their wake, tearing them down and carrying of! the gates of the citizens with a daring recklessness that should have been r&ented by the gentlemert whose property they were so maliciously and wantonly destroying shooting each and every one of them. One of the gentlemen, whose property Wds being destroyed by the disgraceful and reckless scoundrels, did come out of his house with the intention of making dire havoc in their ranks with a double barrelled fowling piece, when they made good their escape, by giving "leg bail" after the most approved style. A liberal reward is offered for their apprehension, this being the third offense.
THE CODE ON THE WABASH.
Dnel Extraordinary—All About a Cfirl. The usually quiet little suburb of this city known as Strawberry Hill, was made the scene of a tragedy last Friday night which will iong be remembered with a thrill of horror by at least one of the participants. The affair of honor was brought about by the following causes and attendant circumstances:
It appears that a couple of young men this city have for some time past been distressing the same fair damsel with their addresses, until the matter engendered personalities, which resulted in a challenge to mortal combat being passed and accepted, and a meeting planned to take place at the locality designated above, when the alleged personalities were to be adjusted in a chivalrous manner. With a view to this adjustment, seconds were chosen, and a referee appointed, and a commitee selected to secure fire arms, which committee made frantic efforts with that object in view, calling at one of the hotels and asking for revolvers, which failing to secure made diligent inquiries in other directions, even becoming desperate to the degree of asking for double-barrelled shot guns or ten cent fire crackers, the latter with the hope, no doubt, of enabling the chivalrous and honor seeking duelists to blow each oth' er's eyes out. At last, however, the young bloods succeeded in getting revol vers, with which they immediately repaired to the appointed scene of honor or premature death.
The challenged party arrived at the scene of action first and being suddenly attacked with a severe chill, proposed to wend his way homeward, asserting that he knew his opponent was too big a coward to put in an appearance. He was de ceived in this, however, by the challenging party putting in an appearance with "blood in his eyes," which apparition increased the violence of the chill of the challenged party, to a degree that was frightful to behold, communicating the disorder to his second whose knees knocked together in a way that was painful, and whose teeth chattered fearfully. In a few moments this infection seized the whole party, each one mistaking the chattering of the other's teeth as a grating of the same with intense anger, and a de sire tor blood. When this disorder had subsided somewhat, ten paces were marked off, and the injured and honorseeking young men were placed in posi t-ion facing each other, and loaded pistols placed in their hands, and the seconds took their respective positions, where upon the group was silent for a few moments, when the command was given to fire, which resulted in another violent chill attacking the entire party, this time only lasting a few moments, how ever, and was immediately followed by the simultaneous discharge of what seemed to be a park of artillery and the challenged party crying out that he was shot, and a fear-stricken stumbling in the direction of the falleen man, who, in the fearful darkness that reigned, made frantic efforts to discern where he was shot. A diligent search revealed the fact that the entire caudle continuation of his new blue cloth coat had been carried away, and, as afterwards ascertained, by the premature discharge of his own pistol. He was assured that he would recover, when the other party was looked after, and it was found that three chambers of his revolver were discharged at the same time, which resulted in his coat sleeve being horribly mangled, and his nervous system receiving such a shock as to utterly preclude his settling the affair in that manner, on that eventful evening. A buss was then procured and the victims of the "duck ague" were where they were of by their "dads" who have placed them on extra duty to pay for the destruction of their coats We withhold all their names on account of their highly respectable connection and for fear of defeating any aspirations any of them may entertain of becoming chief executive of the nation, as dueling would exclude them from aspiring to any office of public trust in the United States

will arrive here Thursday
and will* be the guest'of Mrs. B. W Hanna. She conies determined to give one of her very best entertainments as a soface for the disappointments which have occurred here. She will sing some of her most favorite songs, and among others "Home, Sweet Home," and the celebrated Sweedisli song which has so melted the hearts of all who have heard it
We hope our ciizens will be in full sympathy with the fair songtress on that occasion, as she feels very desirous to give us an entertainment which will fully compensate for all the disappoint ments of former occasions. Let our beautiful Opera House be crowded then on next Thursday evening, and let this peerless cantatrice be greeted with such an audience in point of numbers and intelligence as has never been known in the history of this for it will be an occasion long to be mbered with pride and pleasure by all who attend, and with regret by all who remain away. Messrs. Edwards and Traquair, the gentlemanly ushers, will be present to seat the immense throng upon that^o^casi^iij and there will be no confusion 1M 3 "sSSS
DISASTROUS RUNAWAY.—Thismorning the team of a countryman, whose name we were not able to learn, which was being driven by a boy, became unmanageable and ran away from him. The fiery old "crow bait" went dashing up Sixth street .from Main, running the tongue of the wagon, to which they were attached, against a horse that was hitched on Sixth street, striking it on the knee pan and laming the animal in a fearful manner, leaving the bed and hind wheels of the vehicle in front of the National House and dis tributing the rest of it along down Ohio street until they were captured.
The two horses were not injured very severely, but the wagon was completely demolished. I
THE residence of Mrs. Albert Lange, on North Fifth street, Terre Haute, was entered Friday afternoon by -thieves, and a watch and other valuables carried off.— Indianapolis Journal.
Another victim of that innocent joke.
