TiFK RAND Mnninerchor masque hall at Dowling Tall next Monday evening will be a uiost magnificent affair.
TUB Russian concert is to take place next week, unless that troupe fails to put in an appearance at that time.
POLITICS will be the theme of one of our city Pastors to-morrow morning. How's thjj^ for carrying politics into the pulpit?
MASQUE BALL.—'Toute's Bund will give their annual musquerade ball at Dowling Hall on the 22d. It will be a lino affair and largely attended.
THE number of applicants for keeper of the new Station House is only equalled by the number of dead beats who almost nightly apply for a night's lodging at that seemingly popular public house.
THE well-known and eloquent preacher, Rev. B. F. Foster, of Indianapolis, will preach at the Univeraalist Church on to-morrow morning at 11 o'clock, and in the evening at 7 o'clock. The public are invited. Seats free.
TOUTE'S Quadrille Band will make music for Vincennes folks on the evening of the 30th inst., upon the occasion of a grand ball at that city. ^Ve can say for the Vincennes people that they will hear better music upon that occasion than they are accustomed to.
COMPLIMENTARY.—We heard it remarked last evening at the Cooper's ball, that His Honor Mayor Cookerly was the most accomplished dancer on the floor. His corpulency makes quite an imposing appearance on the floor of a all-room.
JANAUSCHEK.—Monday evening of next week is the evening for the first appearance of this renowned tragedienne, which is an event well worth remembering by our theater-loving people, for we will guarantee that it will be one of the greatest treats of the person. Don't fail to go. Tickets at B.

THE Bartine Combination gave another of their mirth-provoking variety entertainments at the Fifth Street Theater last evening, to a much larger house than the evening before, which shows that the performance isgrowingin favor. The performance was one of unusual interest, and was well received. An entire change ot programme to-night.

started for Bloomington this
for the purpose of delivering the
annual address before the Atheneum Society of the State University, of which he is a member, on the occasion of its forty-second anniversary. It is an honor that but one Terre.Haute man lias ever been permitted to enjoy before him, Col. W. K. Edwards having once delivered the annual address. We can truthfully say that Terre Haute will be well represented upon this occasion.
Our worthy young friends, Messrs. Edwards and Traquair, permanent ushers at the Opera House, will be on hand next Thursday night when Nilsson comes, which assures us that there will be no confusion in seating the throng that will be present upon that occasion. They are courteous and polite to all and thoroughly understand their business. They will also be on hand Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening's on the occasion of Janauschek's playing.

Honor, who, in consideration of her -promise to become lost to this town for all time to come, gave her back her 80 cents, and allowed her to go away as a jcommon dead beat.
Journal
of day before yesterday, that Mr. D. N. Foster, of the firm of Foster & Bros., dry goods merchants of this city, was at that place, perfecting arrangements to establish a mammoth dry goods house there. We can say for Mr. F., that he knows just how to establish and maintain such an establishment to the entire satisfactory profit of himself and customers. To the Journal) we will Sc»y that Mr. F. knows the value of wholesale and judicious advertising, and is "not afraid of printer's ink."

JOKE—MANY VICTIMS.—One
of the best jokes of the season was perpetrated last afternoon, by which many were victimized through the productive genius of a representative of the gentle femininity taking it into her head to play a trick oft' on her "big sisters," which she did in a most effectual manner and which joke didn't stop even there, as will be be seen. It "11 occurred at the residence of a widow lady who resides on North Sixth street. A married lady, a daughter of the widow referred to above, in the absence of her single sisters, planned and carried into effect a scheme to give the Liou^p the appearance of having been ransacked and robbed, and without delay went to work and dismantled the beds, scattering the bedding about over the floor iu the greatest confusion, ransacking the bureau drawers and giving the whole house the appearance of having been made the scene of a first-class robbery, taking from the drawer, a silver watch and other articles of minor value and to add still more to the sensational character of the transaction, left a gold watch and some silver ware in the same drawer from whence the other articles were taken, thus making it appear that through the hurry and confusion incident to such a bold and daring robbery in open daylight, the rascals had failed to lind the articles of greatest value.
Journal
gives an ac
count of the robbery of the premise: and last evening". We were furnished the particulars of the affair by the Chief of Police, who had sent officers to the scene of the robbery and we this morning "wrote up" the affair and had a portion of it in type when we heard of the sell and ordered it suppressed before we published it, as did the
Journal.
It is con
sidered one of the richest jokes that has been perpetrated upon our credulous community for sometime and we are willing to acknowledge it.
A FroirriST.—Last night Officer Wolf discovered a man named James Gibson in an apparently helpless condition, lying in a new and unfinished cellar being excavated by Messrs. Fouts & Hunter, be* tween Eighth and Ninth streets. The officer approached "Jim" and found that his helpless condition was brought about by an overdose of that demoralizing stimulant known as benzine, and kindly volunteered to take him to the City Hotel, to which Jim demurred and made such a display of his muscle as even to astonish the officer, and demonstrating that lie was not so drunk as he appeared. Despite his struggles, however, the officer accompanied him to the hotel, where Jim enthusiastically declared he could whip all the officers on the police force, and went about it a to John Morrissey but was "overpowered by numbers" and placed in a very private room where the officers instituted a- diligent search for valuables that they might deposit them in the safe of that popular hotel, which search revealed one fifty cent "shin plaster" and a fine tooth comb, all of which were safely locked up. This morning Jim was ushered into the presence of the landlord, Hon. G. P. Cookerly, who gave him the privilege of "cutting on his bill" if he would promise to not throw himself upon the hospitalities of the city again.
A HANDSOME COLATION was prepared last evening by Mr. Eugene Breuning, and his most est imable and worthy lady, at the LaFayette Restaurant, to which His Honor, the Mayor, the members of the City Council and members of the press were invited, including ourselves but owing to other and pressing engagements, we regret that we were not able to attend, although we appreciate the favor of an invitation In the highest degree. We learn, however, that the supper was an unqualified success in every respect, and well worthy the popular caterers who prepared it. Our informants were Mayor Coofcerly, Perry Westfall, of the Express, and
