THE FUNERAL OF MRS. I. N. PIERCE, on yesterday afternoon, at Centenary Church, was attended by a very large concourse of citizens and friends of the deceased. The large and commodious audience room of the church was filled to its utmost seating capacity. The services, conducted bjpRev. J. W. Green, Pastor of Centenary M. E. Church, was one of the utmost solemnity. Scarcely an eye in the vast congregation but wept tears of sympathy, as during the discourse, the minister spoke of the pure christian deportment which had ever characterized the life of the deceased, who from childhood had evinced that purity and simplicity of a true christian lady, that so much endears one to those who become acquainted with them—and that "those who knew her best, loved liermost."
At the conclusion of the services at the church, while the friends were taking a last adieu and paying the last tributes of respect to the mortal remains of this christian woman, the choir assisted by members from the various other church choirs of the city, sung that beautiful Hymn, "Thou art gone to the grave," rendering it in a manner such as to impress upon the hearts and minds of the large audience the true sentiment contained in those beautiful lines.
WE desire to cull attention to Messrs Eckstein, Hills fe Co's advertisement of their "Phoenix" brand Pure White Lead in to-day's paper.
The award of a large Silver Medal, the highest premium given for AVhite Lead, at the Industrial Exposition, was made to them for superiority of their' "Phrenix'' brand over all competitors. The award being made on Lead which was purchased by the Judges, in the open market, at the request of one of the other exhibitors of White Lead, and proved to have the same desirable requisites as that exhibited. As there is no article which is adulterated to the same extent as White Lead, we would recommend our patrons, as a matter of econbmy, to use only an article of known purity. From the well-known reputation of Messrs. Eckstein, Hills & Co., we think we can safely say that any article sold by them as purr, will be found as represented.
THE VEXATIONS OF YOUTH.—A youth of this city called on a certain young lady a few evenings since and proposed a "stroll by the gentle moonlight," which proposition was accepted by the fair one. Bonnets, airs and gloves were accordingly put on, and the romantic and probably sentimental young couple started at once, but lo upon reaching the outside door the irate father of the young lady was standing therein and cooly remarked to the daughter, that she was not going to stroll by the gentle moonlight but on the contrary he would "put her in her little bed." The father then turned to the astonished young gentleman, and with the coolest indifference imaginable, bade him "good night," accompanied with the injunction to let his "shadow grow less" about his premises with all possible dispatch. His shadow meandered.
MESSRS. LEAKE & DIXON will open out a series of entertainments at the Opera House in this city, commencing on next Monday evening, for a season of three nights. These gentlemen, in addition to their very strong troupe, including Terre Haute's favorites, Miss Annie Waite and W. H. Leake, who gave our citizens a series of entetrtainments not long since, have engaged the renowned Fanny .Tanauschcck, who has been so successfully "staring it" in Albany. N. Y., Cleveland, Ohio, and other large cities.
The entertainment bids fair to be one of the most successful-and entertaining that has ever visited our city. The troupe is commended in the highest terms wherever it has appeared by the press. For particulars, consult their advertisement in our amusement columns.
P: EDGKRTOX.—Yesterdayhappening to be passing the office of Dr. W. W. Edgorton, late of Chicago, which is located in No. 4, Beach's block, and meeting with that pleasant and genial gentleman, he invited us in. The Dr. has one of the most desirable and handsomely arranged offices in the city, and notwithstanding the fact that he has been here but a few weeks, is doing a good business. He is a regular graduate of a medical school, has a diploma, and for a young man has had very much practice and as numerous testimonials attest-' has been remarkably successful wherever he has practiced. He has permanently located in this city, where ho will be pleased to see the sick and the afflicted, making chronic diseases a speciality. Qive him a call.
THE Criminal Court, Hon. TlfHrnas B. Long presiding, convened yesterday morning pursuant to adjournment and the Grand Jury was set to work, the Court then adjourned until after dinner. In the afternoon, the court convened pursuant to the forenoons adjournment and the case of tho Staters. John Bledshoe, chargcd with disturbing a religious mcetiug' at the United Bethren Church, carrying concealed weapons and several other charges was called and a compromise effected by the young man pleading guilty to disturbing the meeting and carrying concealed weapons which costed him in fines and costs $64.
The Court then adjourned. To-day the Court is not in session.
CITY MAT.—The City Engineer, Mr. Slrout, is preparing a complete map of tlie city. This is very much needed, as the old ones were never complete, and the city has ^een much enlarged since they were made. We hope every encouragement will be given Mr. Strout that is necessary to enable him to make his map a standard one, and from his ability as a careful Engineer, we hare no doubt he will do this. The City Fathers should not be'slow to encourage Ihis important work, and we ask their attention to the same.

Old Reliable.
We observed this morning the sign of that old reliable insurance company, the Connecticut Mutual, on Sixth street,Beach's block. Though plain, 'tis the substantial indicative of the character of the comjjany represented. The economical manage-* ment as shown by ratio of expenses to total income, speaks louder than all the big firm signs that can be posted on the walls. "Beauty is only skin deep" even in a sign, and cash assets are what the people want, and they will insure whero it is the safest.
Special Notice.
From and after February 1st, the firm of 13. G. Cox & Co., will be conducted under the name of B. G. Cox, the co-partner having retired from the firm. All debts due the late firm must be settled at once. 210dl\v B. G. Cox.
