THE "CAN-CAN" DIES DEATH.

The can-can made its last appearance at the Academy of Music night before lasrt, amid the general rejoiceings of all the decent and respectable people of this city each one feeling, that our city was rid one of the greatest nuisances with which it lias' ever been afllicted, and a calamity more to be dreaded thau the Asiiftic cholera.

Jake Berry, the trifling scoundrel who placed this disgraceful drama upon the stage of the Academy, has now absconded, leaving behind him any number of unpaid bills and three actors without a cent in the world. He has been trying to make it appear for some time that he intended remaining in this city as manager of the Academy, and has kept an army of creditors at hay by assuring them that they should have every cent of their pay if they would have patience. They trusted him "not wisely but too well," however, as will be seen

Yesterday Chief of Police Crowe met this brazcn-faced rascal at the Union de pot and engaged him in conversation and was told by him that his wife Belle Graham, was

going

to fill an engagement at Dan Shelby's, but that he intended remaining here for the present. The Chief then paid no further attention to the abscondin couple.

When the four o'clock train, over the Ters ITaute & Indianapolis Road, backed up to the depot, Berry and hid wife stepped aboard and had their baggage checked for Indianapolis, and left the city. Shortly after the train left the depot, Ofiicer Robertson appeared upon the Scene on a search for "Jaiie" with a view of capiasing him for a claim of $85, held by Mr. Joseph Kern, the proprietor of the Academy of Music, but the "bird had flown" since which time auto graphs of Jake have been exhibited about town in astonishing numbers, and it has turned out that lie owes a great many bills, and it is said on good authority that he carried away with him between seven and eight hundred dollars in money, which makes his creditors very anxious to "interview" him.

Three of the actors who have been performing under his management, Alberts, Wilde and Miss Buckner have not been paid for their services for some time, and are left without a cent to their names and are obliged to give a benefit to-night at the Academy in order to raise money enough to settle up their Dills here and get out of town. He didn't "cut" on any printing bills, because ho could not get trusted for a cent's worth of printing by any office in the city, and that's the reason why.

We hope that this "dead beat" and disgraceful scoundrel will yet be captured and brought back to this city and sent to jail until every cent he owes is liquidated and that wherever he goes? he will be branded by the press as a rascal and a scoundrel of the deepest dye.

ADVENTURES OF A COUPLE OF YPUNO BLOODS.—A couple of gay and festive young bloods of this city have for some time, unknown to each other, been paying their "distresses" to a fickle and fair young damsel, who resides on one,of our aristocratic streets, and whom Dame Rumor hath it, has been playing the coquette quite extensively, and sending Cupid's darts right and left through the hearts of susceptable youths, who have a much higher appre ciation of their "winning ways" than any one else. It appears that both of those smitten youths had been calling on this wily maiden for several months, and both had made propositions of marriage, and both had been, as a matter of course, accepted, and proved themselves to be faithful, even to the degree of calling on theirmutually admired and loved one about twice each week, each thinking what a prize he had secured, and thinking he shared her every smile, little thinking that a rival was calling almost each consecutive evening and enjoying her company. So well did the young lady managed her cards that this state of affairs never had a eulimnation until last Sunday evening, when one of the young men began to smell quite a good sized "mice" and put himself on the alert and determined to resort to strategy, and accordingly placed himself on picket which little piece of management made him the unhappiest j'oung man in town, for a while at least, for he had not been on duty long until he observed another young man appears upon the scene and enter the domicile wherein dwelt the idol of his heart, and oh, ye gods, receive such a greeting from the deceptive one as made his heart sink within him, and his hands to clinch with rage, and he grated his teeth and evidently wanted to go for that hated rival. But he resolved upon a wiser course, and concluded ,that he would depart from that house fully resolved never again to darken its threshold and has firmly resolved to "swear oft" from ever courting another girl, aud take the consequence—a bachelors life.

The young lady is no doubt at a loss to know why one of her visitors does not return, but if she happens to notice this item, she will probably learn that which her victim is too proud to tell her. We have not heard how the other young man succeeded in his adventure. Young men take warning

"WANTED A FEATHER BED.—An old, dilapidated looking Teuton came "tootin" into town last evening, looking very much as though he had marched all the way from Paris, and begged some person to accomodate him with a night's lodging free of charge, saying that he had walked all the way from Evansville, and that he had not a cent ot money in the world. He was referred to Ofiicer Lentz who escorted him to the new Station House and offered him lodging there free of charge but the "impecunious old cuss," after a careful survey and inspection of the premises, informed Lentz that he wanted a feather bed but being assured by the officer that "beggars are not choosers," in this city at llast, he concluded he would accept of such accommodations as were tendered him, and remained there over night and left this morning
