THE ]\VI KK ISI'UKF.T WAU.—The armistice in the Parke street war has expired and (\n t. Potter makes another grand sortie upon (he Dowling stronghold through the columns of this morning's Journal. Yorily, verily, it seems to 11s that brethren should dwell together in "peace and unity."

EXCURSION TO CLINTON.—A train will leave the Passenger Depot, Terre Haute, oi\ Sunday, the :2:Hh inst., at 1 o'clock P. 1., for Clinton, to accommodate persons -wishing to attend the funeral of General H. D. Washburn. Train will leave Clinton to return at -i:o0 P. M. Fare, sl^for the round trip.

"Joc» became so obstreperous that he wanted,"to go for that heathen cop" whether or uo,. asserting that 110 policeman dare arrest him. He finally changed his mind when officer McCabe "gobbled'' him up and took him before the Mayor on a charge of provoking an assalt. Iiis Honor fined and costed him in the sum of $8.50, and th^last we saw of "fighting Joe," he was searching for security for his fine, acenmnftiiiedJui Officer ItobertSou.

THE NEW* STATUS HOUSE.

lis First Occupant.

We peeped into the new Station House this morning as we were passing that way, and were much pleased with the appearance of the same.. The capacity of the buiidingis from fifteen to twenty prisoners, according to the emergency of he occasion. The structure is a substantial two-story brick, and presents a very comely apperance withall, contains four cells one for women, one single ceil to be used for the subjugation of obstreperous guests, and two cells for the accommodation of whoever may call. There are several rooms in the.building besides the cells, one ol which" is used for a general reception room, one for the oflice of the Chief ol

Police and three rooms up stairs to be used by the family of the keeper of the institution, who has not yet been appointed. The cells are to be provided with iron bedsteads and their appurtenances, without delay. The buiidingis heated with a furnace, and every room is .supplied with water by pipes.

For the present Chief of Police Crowe will have charge of the institution, and will ever be ready to extend the courtesies of the city to whomsoever may ot.end the majesty of its laws.

THE FIRST GUEST

was a "dead beat" named Metcalt, from Paris, and whom Ollicers McCabe and Lantz met somewhere out in Sibley town iast evening, enjoying a blissful drunk, and who was the first "ornry cuss" that onored this institution with his presence for an evening, and "For ways that were dark,

And tricks that were vain, He certainly was peculiar.-'

For the pioof of which, consult the keeper of the new Station House. This morning, this Metcalf was ushered into the presence of His Honor Mayor Cookerly, who judged his case to be one of irredeemable "dead beat" and ordered, officers McCabe and Lantz to give him a free pass across the dark waters ot the '•sunny Wabash," and accompany him thither, with the injunction to Metcalf "never to again put in an appearance in this city, or he would make it too warm Tor him." Metcalf, then, in company with the officers, mournfully wended hi way out of court, took one long, lingeiing look at his recent quarters and silently consigned His Honor to a much warmer place than he had proposed to make Terre Haute for him.

TIN-: NOSTRUM NUISANCE AGAIN.—A few days since, we made mention in the GAZETTE of the action of the City Council of Indianapolis prohibiting licensing predatory nostrum venders, thus legalizing the vending of their only genuine articles about the streets. We also com'vented the same to the effect that we considered it a decided move in the right direction, and worthy of imitation by our City Fathers. By the experience of to-dav, we would again respectfully call attention to the matter, for to-day the city is afflicted in the manner we predicted in the comments referred to above, by the ad\ent :HLO our city of a representative of "the mly genuine oil of joy." for the healing of the natives afflicted with the ague and the irrepressible "prize-package candy man," both of whom are located on the corner of Third and Main street, surrounded by a crowd of loafers who have lfo other employment than standing on the street corners and interfering with the travel of pedestrians who are not loafers and who do have something to do. When the weather gets pleasant the city will be overrun with this intollerable nuisance of venders about the streets of all manner of patent medicines, prize-package candy, wizzard oil, etc., thus interfering with the business of the city by blocking up the street crossings with loafers besides making the town hideous by the brazen-throated and brazen-faced venders yelling the merits of their nostrums to the congregated throng. We say, can't our City Council take some measures by which this intolerable nuisance may be abated without delay It is a matter worthy iheir earnest-consideration and a move that will meet with the hearty approbation of all good citizens.

A HANDSOME OFFICE.—Mr. M. E. Daniels, the representative of the Connecticut Mutual Lic Insurance Company for Western Indiana, has arrived in this city from Cincinnati to take special charge and, supervision of the business of his division, and has established a very handsome and commodious office in room No. 7', Beach's Block, where Uo proposes to make the headquarters of his department. Mr. J. M. Lawrence, late of the firm of Lawrence & Harvey, furniture dealers, can also be to unci in the same office, as a representative of the same company.

The company these gentlemen represent is one of the most reliable in the country, and it is said lias a larger capita' than any other company. We would commend Messrs. Daniels & Lawrence to the citizens of Terre Haute as courteous and genial gentlemen, whose acquaintance it is a pleasure t- make, though Mr. Lawrence is acquainted with the most of our citizens and in his behalf we will say nothing. CRIMINALCOURT.—TheCriminal Court, Hon. Thomas B. Long presiding, convened yesterday afternoon pursuant to the forenoon's adjournment, and the case of the State vs. George Stultz, charged with the larceny tf $150, was resumed before a jury, which, after a hearing of the evidence, argument and instructions of the Court, retired to their room, and after deliberation, returned with a ver dictconsigningyouug Stultz, ou account }f his youthl'ulness, to the House of Refuge for six months. The Court then adjourned this monjing.* ...

This morning, in the absence of Judge Long, C. E. Hosford, by agreement of the parties, assumed the respousibilty of presiding in the case of the State vs. John A. Blair, charged with the larceny of various articles from the dry goods store of Foster Bros., which case is now on trial before a jury, Sid. B. Davis & R. Dunnigan appearing for the iStJtte in the absence of Proseutor Davis, now at

Indianapolis, and Gen. Charles Cruft, appearing for the? defense. Several of the. witnesses on behalf of the State have already been examined, but it is not likely that a verdict will be rendered this

INFIDELITY.—Col. It. W. Thompson, our own distinguished orator and fellowcitizen, will deliver a lecture at Asbury Chapel, next Tuesday evening, on the "Cause and Progress oflnll ielity," at the earnest request of many of our citizens. The mere mention of the name of this great Western orator, whatever his theme, is all the announcement that is required to fill Asbury Church to its utmost capacity upon that occasion.
