TRIALS OF A GRI:KX AND BASIIFEL YOUXG MAX.—A bashful man of this city was prevailed upon last evening to -ivea young l^Jy acquaintance a call, which he did with very great reluctance with the following result-: Instead oi going to the front door he went to the back" door of the house anil, in atieaiptiiig to eli'eot an entrance, as he would do at home, made tutne demonstrations that appeared decided: barulari.sii and came near being ihlui with griefin toe .shape of -everal eiiarye? ,roin a navy revolver, in the hand.-soi t:.e irate faliier of the gentle damsi i, wlio was ihe mnoeeiit iu-e of the trem-'iiiig young man's call at the i.ou.e. Matters were soon explained by ^the fair one making her appearance and recognizing the young man (whom we will call Jerry, withholding hi.i real name
The young lady cannot account for the strange conduct of her visitor unless it be that he was laboring under a sudden md severe attack of insanity, brought about by studying astronomy through a bottle of Drake's Plantation Bitters.
MOIIE ABOUT TIIE DUN OF THIEVES.— Chief of Police Crowe received a note from a certain party last evening to send a couple of officers to the house on Pwelfth street and Liberty avenue, where the recent stolen goods were discovered. Tne Chief did as he was requested, sending Officers Sibley and Clarey, who nroceeded to the place and succeeded in securing a large amount of the goods before believed to be in the possession of Mrs. Perry, which had been stolen from various parlies during the recent burglaries, among other things, the opera glass and silverware stolen from the residence of Mr. George Duy. Upon com ,.aring the silverware captured last evening with some Mr. Duy had taken iossession of the tir-t morning the goods were on exhibition at the Council Cham her, found that he had made a mistake, and accordingly

The morning papers of to-day are 11!led with plain language from the "heathen Chinee." "We were in the office of one of the morning papers hist evening, and heard an irate compositor exclaim, when busily essaying to read the Chinese manuscript that was handed him to "set up": "I can read it as.prose, but I wilf be d—d if I can make poetry out of it."
NEWSPAPER CHAXGE.—T. J. Gray announces in this week's editoral of the Brazil Miner, that he has disposed of a one-half interest iu that paper to Mr. C. •\V. Ainsworth, Assistant Superintendent of the Indiana House of Kefuge, a graduate of Yale College, and for a long: time a correspondent of the New ork tribune. The Miner will now be published by the nriu of Gray ct Ainsworth. We trust the new management will have unlimited success. .. ,s

returned a part of that
which he thought to be his own upon the first occasion. The opera glass was very much damaged, having been buried in the cellar, the case was mildewed and the glass itself was much injured. The articles that were secured last evening, we understand, were buried iu the cellar or under the floor. Owing to a very unpleasant and unfortunate misunderstanding between the party -poken of above, and the officers present, which is being investigated, it thought that the one or more burglars were not secured. AYe are pained to see petty jealousies spring up among our police, thus interfering with the capture of thieves and the suppression of crime iu our city.
"NYIIAT A MIKEOU REVEALED.—Not long since a merry group of four persons, consisting of two young ladies and an equal numberofyounggentlemen, might have been seen in the home of one of the young ladies, in this city, enjoying a pleasant social evening's entertainment. Dame rumor hath it that one of the couples enjoy the relation of lovers. This interesting and interested group, after having exhausted all the nl ays usually resorted to upon such occasion?, paired off couple by couples, the lovers occupying a position near the wall and the other couple directly fronting a large mirror. The lovers being directly behind them, thought they could indulge in a little kissing unnoticed, and immediately went about that pleasant little salute in a manner pleasing to both, while the other couple having their backs turned, were observing all that was transpiringback of them by the reflection in the mirror. All this was observed by them and laid up in store for the time and no mention was made of it for a couple or three weeks, until the parties all met again at the same place, when the startling revelation was made, to the surprise and mortification of the enthusiastic and sentimental lovers, who thus received a warning not to indulge in kissing too rapturously when there is a mirror in lhftroom. Young sentimentalists, beware of mirrors.
TIIK CUIMIXAL COUKT, Hon. Thomas B. Long presiding, convened yesterday, afternoon pursuant to forenoon'oadjournment, and the motion for a new trial in the case of the State vs. George W. Jackson, recently convicted of the larceny of a couple of hogs, was argued by Sid. R. Davis for the applicant and Sant. C. Davis for the State. After a hearing of the argument the Court overruled the motion and sentenced the prisoner to the penitentiary for two years, and adjourned.
This morning the Court metpursuant to last evening's aeljournment, and the motion for anew trial in the case of the.State vs James R. Spanu, convicted of perjury, was argued by R. Dunnigan for the applicant, and Sant. C. Davis for the State. The motion in this case was also overruled by the court, and the applicant sentenced to a couple of jesxts in the penitentiary.
The case of the State vs. George Stultz, charged with the larceny of $150 from Wm. Moore, of Otter Creek township, last December, was next called and is now on trial before a jury, Davis & Davis and John C. Briggs appearing for the prosecution, and It. Dunnigan for the defense.
