SKTTLFD.—A country school debating society, at the Douglas School House, in this county, has forever decided the pr..'at question of capita! punishment, iu the affirmative. We presume that the question will not be agitated further by legislators.

TAN WAOFS OF SIN*.—A couple ol scapegraces wore up before Afayor Cookorly yesterday, charged with associating with prostitutes and were fined and costed in the usual way. In default o!" tines and costs they were remanded to the "tombs" where they will have an opportunity to contemplate "the wages of sin" to their heart's content.

MOFF AMUSEMENTS COMING.—Bartine's Occidental Combination will put in an appearance at Dowling llall, Friday evening of this week, for a season of two evenings and one matinee. The troupe consists of fifteen negro minstrels, gymnasts and pantomimists, whose performances are said to be the wonder of large and enthusiastic audiences wherever they appear.

will give

a ball at Beach's Hall on the evening of February 3d. None will be present but those who receive invitations, as the entertainment will be select and as the reputation of "Typos" for giving firstclass entertainments of this kind is wellknown and appreciated by those who have attended, any comment from us would be superfluous.

DRY GOODS.—Tueli, Ripley & Deming announce, through our advertisement columns to-day, that they have a very fine assortment of dry goods and al! kinds of goods to be found in any firstclass dry goods store in the West, and of the very best qualities. Tim PRESS AND SMALL SHOWMEN.— "Ti:ere is a wide-spread delusion to the et-t'l-rt that a nenvspaper, fv virtue ot being a newSjiiiiK'r, is bound to take ever\ tiling that is

"people in the show business arc strong in its laiih. Every three-penny exhibitor hat monies along seems to imagine that the eveS of the world are upon him, and ch"t tin press, in particular, will be lalse to its duly aihi useless to mankind, unless ho and his a {fairs are noticed. And—the sni:i!!' the shoinman the greater his prete r.s ons.—Exchanfje.

Tlie above item we clip from an exchange which, no doubt, knows whcieot it speaks. It is eminently true of very many "catch-penny" bogus organizations that seriously afflict the country, until, for want of patronage the organization prematurely dies and the world is the better for its demise. Very many of the.-e one-horseshowmen demand and expect from the press the most favorable notice of their performances whether they merit it or not, just because they favor the editor with complimentary tickets, ju^t as if tiie number of compliment aries lie receives should be the basis of his comments oil the merits or demerits of the entertainment. If the press of the country would give showmen to understand that their performances would be criticised, if not up to the standard, without regard to the number of "dead heads" left the editor, the readers of the papers would be the better for it by not attending the proposed entertainment, and the paper would have a higher appreciation by its readers, and our citics would have abetter class of entertainments than is the case at present, and in the long run, it would be much better for the papers, because of the fact that the proprietors of shows would be more likely to be responsible men, as the system would do away with many poor performances, as it is impossible for any poor show to exist for any length of timo against the criticisms of the press.

TIIF CRIMINAL, COURT, Hon. Thomas B. Long presiding, convened yesterday afternoon, pursuant to the forenoon's adjournment., and the case of the State vs. Jeptha Downs, charged with grand larceny, was resumed before a jury, which, after a hearing of the evidence, arguments and instructions of the Court, rendered a verdict awarding the accused a term of two years in tlie penitentiary.

The case of the State vs. Oliver C. Perry, charged with the larceny of $25 from one Laura Jones, sometime since, was next called and tried by the court, which, after hearing the evidence took the case under advisement until this morning when the accused was declared convicted of the charge and awarded two years in the penitentiary, the Court pronouncing sentence at once

Sentence was then passed on Jeptha Downs for two years, James R. Spann, indicted and convicted of perjury, of which mention was made in yesterday's GAZETTE, was also arraigned and sentenced for two years. Col. R. R.

DIDN'T KNOW TIII: DIFFERENCE.—A young limb of the law in this city tilled the engagement of a Methodist minister to preach in a country school house net a hundred miles from this city and not later than last Sunday. He went out to the appointed place on time and was rejoiced to meet quite a large congregation. Reports say h« gave them a first-class sermon, taking his text somewhere in Chitty's Blackstoue, however, instead of from the Bible, and his flock seemed to appreciate it amazingly. Of couse it was down in Sullivan county.

To R,K THOUGHT OF.—One of our exchanges very truthfully says "Occasionally a newspaper patron gets vexed if the publisher sends iiim a bill, and asks for its payment. This ought not to be so in a single instance, as no offence is ever intended in any case when the bill is sent. Reflection for a moment ought to show those who are so unreasonable as to get mad when dunned for their alvertising bill that they should thank the publisher for giving him credit for six months or a year—as the case may be —without interest. But many are possessed with the idea that it makes no difference whether they pay promptly for their work or not they seem to think tlie publisher does not need any money. There is no business where out-goes are more constant and certain than in the 'newspaper business and it does not take much ciphering to show that a constant drain on his pocket without "any replenishment would soon compel him to close his office and suspend business. Don't, therefore, get mad when you are asked for payment. The better plan is to call and pay without .waiting to be asked."
