THE inhabitants of the old alley of the Wabash" are awakened from their slumbers nightly by the shrill boat whistles again, which means business for the boatmen, if it is not so pleasant for the .sleepers.
ATTEMPTED JBUKGI.AKY.—Night before last, burglars undertook to effect an entrance into the residence of a gentleman named Jesse McOouibs, ^vho^ resides about a mile out in the country, but were foiled in their unlawful and tieierous attempts by virtue of the secure manner in which the door was bolted. Alter ineffectually attempting to force an enterance for some time, they retired iu disgust.
SXEAK THIEVES ON TIIF. RAMPAGE.— A couple of nocturnal prowlers went for the clothvs lines at Col. Thompson's last niiiht, but were discovered by Charley, who tossed a billet of wood at one oi them, who was proceeding to strip the line of the clothes thereon, with so much earnestness and muscle that the villain made for the fence, when Charley sent another stick at him in a manner "quite frightful to see," and had it hit him instead of a plank on the fence, would probably have been painful to feel as it was, the missiie was hurled with such force as 10 knock down something less than a pannel of fence. Both the one on the outside and the one on the inside of the fence succeeded in making good their escape, leaving the victorious Charles in full possession of thcyard.

Di
rected his previous watchfulness. Upon arriving at the house, he knocked at the door and was hailed from within by a gruff voice ii |uiiiug, "what's wantui'.' Dan. answered that he wanted admission. Perry then arose from hisdo\\n\ couc-h, and admitted the party and was j-dercd by the Chief to strike a light, which he did, though he manifested
of au inclination to "striKe out" into the street. He, however, considering "di.-eretion the better part of valor," lid as he was bidden, and lighted a lamp, which revealed the fact that there was but one bed in the house, which was occupied by Perry and his wife, while a couple of men were lying on the floor who, upon being interrogated as to who they were, where they were from and what they were doing, answered that ihey didn't know. Ail four of the parties were then secured, and a vigorous search the house instituted, which revealed the fact that the suspicion of the Chiel were well grounded.
rlhey
discoveied
that goods of all kinds were secreted tinier the bed, up in the loll and in old drawers, trunks and boxes.
The officers then proceeded to the jab with their prisoner.*, leaving a guard over •he property to sec that it was not le-
or disturbed. The names of the
parties arretted,]::s we have learned them, 'tre "William Perry, George Mutt and William Foster, the two latter hailing from.St. Louis, the former keeping the hou-e, as we stated above. Mrs. Perry was not placed in jail because of ier delicate physical condition.
This morning a wagon was sent up to the house, which was made the scene of the previous night's raid, which vehicle put in an appcarancc before the Mayor's oTiec a short time afterwards, laden with the rich spoils of many nights of successful burglary, which were placed on 'xhihition at the Mayor's office, which .vas thronged till moririi'-j with a pressing crowd of persons, nearly all oi whom had been victimized, and were present see if they could find any of their property. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Duy, recognized, and recovered their silverware. Mr. Robinson recognized the cape, shawl and set of furs which were stolen from his house, near the I [tilmail farm, night before last, and
William Duncan recognized the viliian vho "went for him" with intent to commit highway robbery, on Sixth street, not long since, in the person of George Mott. An invoice was taken of the goods captured, which consisted of nearly everything the most fertile-minded notion clerk could imagine. Among other things we noticed needles, hair pins, soap, candy, apples, thimbles, pocket books, lead pencils, bufl'alo robes, shawls, Christmas toys, baking powders, and spoons. We believe we did not see any false hair for we don't believe the scoundrels, with all their boldness and audacity would dare steal a man's wig, or a woman's waterfall or switch.
TIIE TRIAL.
About 11 o'clock, the Council Chamber, the place where Mayor Cookerly had appointed for the preliminary examination to take place, was thronged with a heterogeneous mass of persons, whose curiosity had got the better of their modesty, and who were present to get a view of the nocturnal scoundrels who have become the terror of our city.
They were soon brought up into court, and each entered a plea of "not guilty and William Foster asked that his case be continued until he should have an opportunity to employ counsel, and hive time to get a witness, named Clinton, from Mattoon, Illinois, (whom a by-stander remarked is now in jail. His Honor appointed his day for preliminary examination next Monday and fixed his bail at $3,000, in

WANTED A JUG OF GAS.—Au old man, residing somewhere away down in the forests of old Sullivan, and representing the barefooted and unwashed Democracy of that section of our State, came up to _e buck-board city, bringing with him jug, with which he at once proceeded to the gas-works and "interviewed" the Superintendent or sopie one of the employees about thusly: Say, look yer, you fellar,
the
I
come clar up here from Sullivan a loatin' this jug, which yer see fetched with me, to get some of yer which neighbor Spruggins tells me sell to a fellar burn iu coal oil
county I'v gass you lamps, ma ai ol
The gentleman assured the old I that he eouM not sell him a jug of gas in fact "arose to explain," but the man would not understand a cents worth, and returned to his forest home, making use of language unbecoming a saint, and a follower of the precepts of the good book. Now, if you want an eye draped in mourning, just ask the old man how they sell gass in "Tary Hut."

was made the victim of a stupenduous confidence game on the part of his neighbor.
COMES TO GRIEF OVER AN OLD OFFENSE.—Officer Yandever yesterday afternoon made the arrest of an old colored man, on Fourth street, rejoicing in the cognomen of Thomas Powell, on a charge of the larceny .of a cow about two years ago, from one of his colored brethren residing in Ncvins township, whose name is "Jo." Roberts, who at the time of the theft, offered a reward of $50 for the apprehension of the thief. Powell was taken before tiie Mayor, who fixed his bail at $500, in default of which he was "sent up" to await the action of the Grand Jury, meanwhile, he will no doubt add much to the color of that institution.
