The country itself is not favorably rcparled on. The island is described as traversed by narrow piths, and no roads could be found oil'eringa way for ordinary travel. Toe village of S imatia was the principal town on the peninsula formed by Saniaua Pay. Tt had, at the time thu report wassubmitted, 1,721 inhabitantsmost of them negroes—who carried on a very languid and meager commerce with the neighboring islands. The Saul ma. Peninsula is represented as remarkably healthy and little .subject to yellow fever. Bituminous coal was found quite plentifully at several points and of excellent quality. The mountain ranges are covered by a luxuriant growth of valuable timber, mahogony, bulata, acoui i, menosti, palms and pine. -The aius between the mountain ranges are fertile and healthful.

Tne city of San Doming-) had, at the time of the report, (!,000 people. The town was well fortified ami abundantly supplied with guns. As to the defenses, the' report says: There t.re no ditches except on two'fronts bordering the bay," and in front of the gate on the land side. There are 10 iand fronts these, together with the water fronts, being pierced by about 150 embrasures, which, in the land fronts, are confined to the bastions, there b.-ing no arrangements for artiliery on the curtains. In the water fronts on the iy there are three or four breaches through which the town can bo

saulted. The castle is connected with the enceinte, and .situated on ablult near the bar. Tiie gates of the town are three in number, two of them on the river fronts. The town can be very easily taken by assault- The »r at the mouth of the river has but thirteen feet, and appearto be shoaling. At the town the river is about four hundred yards wide, ami craft drawing thirteen ieet can navigate titteen miles from the mouth.

The reports conclude: There is cer-

tainly little reason, judging lrom what .1 saw, "iocall Dominica a "white republic." Tne in:iss of tiie people tiro negroes and imilaitot's. A general indole nee seems to reij-n. Tiie are no indications of either commeieial OT agricultural prosperity. Money and the comforts ot lilt? are very scarce". Wages are low, except when foreigners are the employers. Tiie mats of the people seem to be perfectly contented to eUe out their existence in cave hut*, trusting for support to the bahana.titul cocoanuts. The American negroo of iSamana express more ambition and desire of improving their condition than the others. The best possible feeling appears to prevail toward Americans, much better than toward the English and French.

No man ever prospered in thewoild without the co-operation of his wife. If she unites in mutual endeavors or rewards his labors with an endearing smile, with what confidence will he resort to his merchandize or ins farm, liy over the land, sail upon the seas, meet difficulty ami encounter danger, it'he knows that he is not spending his strength in vain, but that his lib will be rewarded by the sweets of home. Solicitude and disappointment enter the history of every man's life, and

Domingo Report.

The following tire the principal features of ihe reports on Sun Domingo, made by 11 re vet Captain (ieorjre i. McCleilan to Jell". 1) ivi/, .Sectvttiry of War, in 1S-34. A j-eport under date of August 27,18-34, says: 'i ie jiopiibiie of l/ominica claims tis its •western Ij'/tindary tiie old

between

tie Freiicli tmd Spanish portions of the island. This coinim-nced, on tiie north, at Hie mouih of the Di iboii or Massacre liver, about eight nnles oast ot Port })uup!iin, and followed that stream to its head. It then, to the nortward of west, loilowed, so !ar a.- tiie Doudon and Marmalade, the crest of tiie mountains separating the valley oi the Goave from the streams running to the north Then, running a little east of south, the snmmit of the range separating the waters of i!ie(ioave from those emptying into Hie Connives, etc., and crossed the Artibonite at iSlirehalais there its direction was about southeast (crossing the Etang rtt. 3Iae!.e), as far as to the j:em 1 of the i'edamales, and, lintilly, it followed that stream to its mouth, at Pitas Gove. Tiie llaytiens now hold possession of thtit pari of the valley oi Goave on the right banks of Riviere d'e la Porte and the (Juayamuco, below the moulii of tiie tirit named stream. In other respects the oid boundary seems to it'. maintained, and is occupied by numerous garrisons. The isiand is traversed by three principal ranges of mountains, running nearly east tttid west the first is north of tiie river ague and tins, and forms tiie northern boundary of the Voira ileal.

Several harbors tire mentioned, but none seem to equal Samana Iay, of which Hie report says: The largest ship-of-lhe-line can enter this bay with the ulmost ease ami lind secure anchorage which is entirely out of cannon range frosn voxels outride the keys. The anchorages and small harbors on the northern side of tiie bay, near the entrance, a-re very good, and have excellent holding-ground. The only objection to this bay arises from the rareness of land breezes, at certain seasons of the year at least so that it is diiiicult for "huge vessels to saii out, as the channel is somewhat narrow for them to beat through. Tiiis dii'iicuity can bo remedied by the use of a steam-fug, by hedging, or warping were tiie channel well "buoyed oi."," it is probable that a siiip-of-tlie-Iine could, in ca"e of necessity, heat out. Willi respect to steamers, there is no obs.icle in the way of their entering or leaving at any time iu the day or night. The peninsula of Santana 'is alm.'st an island for at its base the land is low and swampy, much cut up by inlets, and overgrown with mangrove bushes. The approach lrom tiie main land is for a league and a half over a narrow winding path, practicable for only one man at a time, partly under water to the arm pits, ami in many places overhead in mud and water on side. The peninsula itself is high and broken the hills ranging from a few hundred to2,01)0 feet in altitude, exceedingly steep, very irregular iu direction, and interspersed with narrow, sloping valley.*, the whole covered with a dense growth of under-bru-h, vinestmd timber. It is well watered by siiKiil mountain streams. The predominant rook is a limestone, generally porous, liutoften oeeurringofsuch quality as to form a good building stone in that eiimaie, and in localities convenient lor working.

he is but half provided for his voyage who finds but an associate for hapjjy hours, while for his month of darkness and distress no sympathizing partner is prepared.

Are -Oysteks Hkaltiiy?—Open an oyster, retain the liquor in the lower or deep sheli, and if viewed through a microscope, it will be found to contain multitudes of small oysters, covered with shell* and swimming nimbly about—one hundred and twenty of which extend but one inch. Besides these young oysters, the liquor contains a variety of animalcule and myriads of three distinct species of worms. Sometimes the light represents a bluish star about the centeroftheshell, which will be beautifully luminous iu a dark .room.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and allocs kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same elfect as if tl»c metlicinehad been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives iu some sha e, are indispensable in tiie practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration lias been to get one which lias either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This has at last been done. Edward "WiLBEit's Family Pills fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small uoses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of lie alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a biessing to the individual who suifers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched with lever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.

IlclmintJiology.

A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. Tiie huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. Tiie history of Helmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men, their obviousness to the senses', together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot tiie animal economy, ail tend to render them an' object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speediiy, safely and permanently expelling them trom tiie human sytem. Ebwahd Wilder's Mothek's Wohm Sykup is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger, is'o intestinal worm can live in itspresense. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this deiightl'ul syrup.

Dr. Laeunec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician wiio ever lived. Yet with all his skill iu detecting the nature and form ol the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. Lie drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents whicii enter into the combination of Edward Wilder's Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use of ttiis truly great medicine he is fully master of the situation. He has no fear in the presence of croup, no misgivings at the advance of broi chitis he grapples wttli consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluable medicine at liand.g

'Which makes sleep a pain, and turna its balm to wormwood,", is, we till know, the most, common of all the disorders of tiie stomach. IL is also the most obstinate. It has been tiie most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of nature. It is self evident that the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is tiie talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unoeasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he lias overtaken. Edward Wilders atotna'jh Ilillcrs, their body being the purest of capper-distilled whisky, makes tiiis object attainable alike to fill. The British army -when It advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, -which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Oaudiana than by tiie bullets of the enemy. This ancient instiitution is one of thelnrgest, and to the medical student, the most- interesting of the many public charities which adorn the gay capitol of the French. It receives within its walls annually thousands of sick poor. A considerable portion of the building is set apart-for patients suft'ering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, oid or young, is taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilla in some form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had charge of the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic or scrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-asli, roseash, pimples, scrofuia, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good,in 1 ost they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder''s SarsapariUa and PotasJi to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. It possesses virtues shared by 110 other combination of these substances. It is a therapeutic marvel. Against all the diseases at. which it is aimed it is simply resistless it never fails. See to it that you suffer noton.e diiy longer with any of the ills which it cures. Get it at once.
