WE are pained to learn of the -serious i'.iness of Gen. Washburne at 1:irf homo tit Clinton. It is thought there is no hop-, of his recovery.
WE hear Perry Tuttlo spoken of as tin prospective candidate of the republican party for Mayor of the city, at the approaching May election.
TJIE monthly concert of the Mfennerchor club will be give* at the new Turner Hall to-night. The attendance of ali the members is solicited.
THE bar room of the National House hi decorated with a time table of the E., T. H. & C. Railroad. The first express train will run over the new road to-day.
TIIE Typographical Union of this city will give a ball on the evening of February od, ha 11 not yet fixed upon. Prof. Tout's excellent Quadrille Band has been engaged to furnish music upon this eventful oceassion.
NILSSON ice cream candy lias been ordered by one of our leading confectioners. It is said to be very delicious, and gives one a taste for music. It is also said to be good for an "intlamed throat." Try it, ye singists—if you get a chance.
WITAT HE KNOWS ABOUT FARMING.— An old •Sn!Iivan-county-ite proposes to write a book on "What 1 Know About Farming." It is thought if he would write a book on what he doesn't know, it would be a remarkably large volume— probably -more voluminous than valuable.
PERSONAL.—Mayor Cookerly and Councilman Forrest returned from Bloom field Saturday night.
A. M. Luke, Deputy Warden of the Southern penitentiary, and N. U. Bull, Esq., of Sullivan, were at the National last evening.
ANOTHER BURGLARY '.—Some enter prising and rope-deserving burgiar, or burglars, "went through" the house of Henry Robinson, who resides out near the Uulman farm, last night, and succeeded in making their escape with a valuable cape and shawl, which, it is claimed, are worth $150. Next!
JOURNALISTIC.—Mr. S.F.Horrall, late city editor of this paper, has purchased the Washington (Ind.) WeeKly Gazette, aud will enter upon the" discharge of his duties, as editor and proprietor, on the 1st of the coming March. Mr. Horrall will make an able and eflicient Republican editor, and we wish him unlimited success,
TIIE proprietor of the Fifth street nuisance complains that we call him a "loafer." What can a man expect who advertises his "wife as Madam "Frailty," the character being well known, as the leading one in the "cancan," where she exposes her person to loafers at 15 cents a head. Would any man do this He is not worthy even the name of "loafer."
MAGGIE DEAN AND HER PIIDDEN WEALTH. When this gently cooing maiden, who, it will be remembered, was sent to JelFersonyille recently convicted of larceny, arrived there the matron of that institution vigorously
searched
her person and personal effects, for whatever they might yield, which search revealed $70, which it is claimed she had secreted iu a handkerchief under her arm, which the same is a matter of much comment in this city, where the fact is known* Who is the loser of this little sum some people would really like to
A Little Game of "-even Up" ami Vi'liat Came of It. John Mains, a man who resides in Harrison tr.vnship, and one Timmas F. Walker, who holds forth on Main .-tief t, were in the saloon formerly known •istiie "old Early Saloon," now kept by a man named Kuntmun, S.iturday evening, enjoying a quiet little game "the snme which was seven up," one Georjre Nickels keeping tally of the game on the table with apiece of chalk, while the two interested players were silently and watchfully passing a, quarter of a I:ar from the one to the other, is one chanced to lose or win,
A
hich liLt'e game was progressing nicely, until Oilieer Lance ca-me stumbling in, "in a way which the players dispistd," and in the game that en-ued Lance took a hand, and also look he two playisLs before Justice Smith, on a charge of ganibliuir, ivlitii :i trial was had, which resulted in .he parties being found guilty, and lined tie doliar each aud cost. Walker thinking adollur was getting olf'cheap enough, in.-tituted a vigorous search in the neigh* borhood of his think- to yi.sCovevhid.deti treasures of the denomination of one dollar, to liquidate this to him, reavonabie rluim of justice but during this investigation, was informed by City Attorney tlavens that the costs in his case woulu oe $3) which little announcement "Toiii" received in mute astonishment, and at once discontinued the search for the doi,ar, and a.-serted that he wou.d ".-taipj \m oli" for it all. The olher defendant, John Mains, looked unutterable indignation, first at the squire, and then at Haven.-, and showed unmistakable signs oi wtiming to "go lor thai healiu-'n Justice."
One very a muting incident occviiYetl luring the progress of the trial which v\e wiil explain One of the witnesses on he part of the city, one Lowe, testified strongly against Walker that "T im diinking he would cross-examine him, .is lawyers sometimes do, commenced thusly "Q.—State what I was doing previous to playing with Mains? .A.—You •ad just been playing with another icier and won every cent he had, and he "slid out." Walker then teiinitiated he cross-examination, and subsided at nee. Moral: Be careful how you gamble, if it is only for a quarter
A CHAPTER FRO.AI A CRIMINALS' LIFE.—A convict named Allen, made nis escape from the Southern Penitentiary at Jeilersonville oa the 2Gth oi Djcem'oer hi4, and was traced out of the eily about forty miles, to the house of an ild farmer whom lie victim'zed in the following fashion and to the extent that A-iil appear ill this narration: Allen came to the house of this old farmer, whose name we could not learn, in his striped uniform prescribed by prison regulations, and informed the old mail that he was a convict and hat there was a reward ottered for him, ind that if he could have the privilege oi -taying all night, he would allow the ild farmer to take liini back to prison and ciaim the reward. This proposition looked very much to the old gent that there was money in it, and he readily assented and gave the fugitive lodging. About two o'clock next morning Allen arose from the arms of morpheus, and went sor whatever he could iiiidthaihe could carry off. lie succeeded in d'scovering and appropriating $70, belonging to his host, and a good suit of clothes belouging to the old mail's son, which ho "swopped" his striped suit for, after the Indian fashion i. c. on his own terms, and succeeded in making his escape. There all trace of him was lost, until he brought up in Andrews' boot and shoe store, on Main street, in this city, from whence our "cops" escorted him to the Vigo Inutile, where he languished in durance vile until John Ryan, who was recently convicted ol robbery and sent from here to Jeilersonville, aud informed on him, whether purposely or by accident, your deponent knoweth not. In accordance with this information Deputy Warden Luke came to this city from JeJI'ersonville Saturday and started back to that city with Allen in charge last night. Verily, verily, the way of t'Lic transgre.-sor is hard.
FATAL BURNING.—Saturday evening about o'clock, a heartrending accident occurred in the family of Samuel Archer, a colored man in the employ of Messrs. McKeen & Minshall, and residing on South Third street, by which a little daughter of Mr. Archer, was burned to such a degree thatshedied in a few hours.
It appears that the little girl, in com* pany with two or three other children about her owfl size was left in the room for a few moments by the mother, when one of them siamed the door, the knob of which was oil the outside. And according to the statement of ort» of the children ibis little girl was playing iu the tire with a piece of paper, and turning her back to the lire place, her clothes caught fire.
The screaming of the children brought the mother to the door, who made frantic efforts to effect an entrance, but owing to the knob being off the door, could not, and finally was compelled to go around to the back window and break in the sash. By this time several other ladies, who reside iu the same house, came up and extinguished the fire but the child was so terribly burned that there was no hope, though some of the best medical and surgical aid of the city was called in, Drs. Link, Young, Mann and M^han ali being present but in spite of all their eliorts, the little sufferer passed away after having writhed in pain three hours and a half.
The funeral will take place from their residence, first house this side of the new African M. E. Church, to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock. The unfortunate and bereaved family have the sympathy of the eutire community in this serious affliction.
TIIE Criminal Court, Hon. T. B. Long, presiding, convened this morning pursuant to previous adjournment, and the cah© of the State
