In order to swell the apparent volume of business done by theeompany, and to show a low rate of expenses, a large number of false or fictitious entries were made in the books of the company of policies issued and premiums received. The-e entries, amounting to several hundred, alter serving the purpose of a false statement, appeared upon the books marked as "not taken." The fact is not

even denied by the officers of the company that these entries were entirely fictitious.

Several death claims appear to have [existed against the company for some (time, which, although undisputed, were allowed to remain unpaid a long time utter they were due, and contracts appear to have been made with agents, giv|ing salaries and commissions which no properly conducted company could possibiy afford to do. By these and other unbusinesslike practices the company incurred large liabilities, without a proper 'reserve to meet them, audit isa startling fact that the books show an expenditure (since its organization, a period of only 15 months, of over 000 for advertising, printing and stationery alone.

The books at present show liabilities amounting to S1S7,3S7, and assets amonting to but $12~,1U6, and it is doubtful whether all of this can be realized, a large amount being put down as due from agents and as unpaid deferred premiums. Inchyling the capital of the I company the excess of liabilities over assets is'$lS7,-81. According to the order of Judge Barnard the winding up of the affairs of the company will be in the hands of the receiver, Mr. James H. Coleman, of 70 Nassau street.

Ranges of the French Guns in Taris. The London Times correspondent at St. Germain writes on the 23d, describing a

(scene on tiie terrace in front of the wellknown hotel I ninteil to No. 14, which commands a splendid view. "Why, how these fellows have worked. There is the ground all turned up fresh in front of a new battery below Valarien at the house on the cross-roads. Tnat must be some 1,800 yards nearer to the German lines. And when it is armed—" Just at the momenta gun opened from the Windmill Battery the new redoubt which I spoke of some time ago, and the whistled away toward La Celle, where there is smoke rising from a splendid chateau. Another puff. A shell toward Chaton, where they are splashing up houses and injuring "life and property," also. And as we were looking, lo there was belched out a mighty volume of smoke hijih from the rampurt of Valarien itself. It attracted attention only for the moment, and I was explaining the details of the position to my companion, when suddenlv there grew up high above us a sound which is like nothing else, in the world—the iron pinion of the Death An^el which is sent from the mouth the cannon. Down it swooped, and from the opposite bank of the river which fiows at our feet there came an eruption of earth and fat smoke as the shell blew out a tremendous crater. It was a decided success—a messenger from one of the new guns, which had thus made a sweep to strike a point eight thousand meters away. That shell, well landed in the midst of them, would have sufficed to shake a battalion. I went out, and was standing in a group in which were Gen. Von

Lowe, who commands here, Lieut. Col. Harvey, Mrs. MeKonzie, an English lady and her children. There were many Prussian soldiers in front, some French ladies and gentlemen, and the great crowd of idlers from St. Germain who haunt the terrace. In our rear a body of infantry was drawn up for evening parade under the trees. To the eve of the artillery officer at Valerein the assemblage must hive been a splendid mark. The thick white cloud, bigger than a man's hand, and opaque as cream spurted out from Val.irien again. No one minded it. I believe we were all talking of the latest news, and many seconds apparently had elapsed when suddenly French men and women and soldiers made a rush from the rails in front of the terrace, as the roar of the terrible projectiles burst on them, and, singing in our ears, it crushed down this time right across the river, at the i-ide of what is called "Gladstone's house." The General stood firm, and shouted, "What are you about, men?

Steady there." But the flurry was over in an instant, and the ladies au gentlemen who had lied came back, some smiling, some grave. The ladies, who had been most agitated, were quite comforted by the General's assurance that the gun had developed its full power, 8,300 metres. As I am going to sleep within 200 yards of the spot, I trust the General is right.

The same correspondent adds that the Prefecture at Versailles can be shelled by any gun at Valerian. The Prefecuture is 9,400 metres from the nearest eaileut of the work.

AS INSURANCE IMBROGLIO.

The CIUISPS of the Failure of the Farmers' and Mechanics' Life insurance Company of Nov

York—Extravagant

loss Management. The collapse of the Farmers' and Mechanics' Life Insurance Company, comiiiij so soon after tiie failure of the Great We-torn, has taken the public by surprise, and there seems to be a general desire that Superintendent Miller should institute a thorough and searching investigation into the affairs of all the companies, and take means to prevent any jnore disasteis of thiskind. In the man1k agement of the Fanners' and Mechanics' company there seems to have been perfect recklessness as to expenses while the interests of the policy holders were entirely disregarded.

Some of ihe facts in Superintendent Miller's report of the condition of the allairs of the company are really astounding, and develop lire most culpable mismanagement on the part of the officers. He .-ays the company was organized in September, 18'i!), with a capital of $125,0U0, and that having made the required depo--.it of $100,UOl) Willi the insurance department, commenced business. Tiie expenses of the company Irom tiie first appear to have been enormously large and dhproportionute to the business dime, but that their lir.-t annual statement was so made up as to give false results and impressions as to the ratio of expenses as well as to the amount of business done.

DR. HAMMOND advances the novel idea that Spiritualism is a disease, hysterical and cataleptic iu its nature. He professes to be able to cure the worst case of medium by a treatment of iron and strychnine. 'Doubtless those remedies may be beneficial in certain cases, but in others the medicine which in our childhood days was known as "hickory-oil" would be more efficacious.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if th« medicinehad been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha. e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, a3 was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This lias at last been done. EDWARD WINDER'S FAMILY PILLS fulfill all the requirements of the case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet iniid. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but whatever quantity given, they create no neessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched witn fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.

Ilelmintliology.

A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. Tiie history of Helminthology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speediiy, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. EDWARD WILDER'S MOTHER'S WORM SYRUP is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its eil'ccts are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in itspresense. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this delightful syrup.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Y'et with all liis skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before him, lie was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still lie left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilders Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use of this truly great medicine he is fully master of the situation. He lias no fear fti the presence of croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wttli consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluable medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

"Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of tiie stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in tiie book of nature. It is self evident that the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of cojjper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specitic—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality oi the disorder by a corresponding speciality oi cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health

Gaudianna River.

The British army wnen It advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands? All Europe believed that the invading army was extirpated. Yet malarial diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickaning influence of miasm. The three great actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they

more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will ve have need of a medicine which "will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills aud fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.
