TNRC Journal and Ex-prow are agitating the haunted house sensation.
"PKCOLLETE"dresses are in fashion for young ladies who are "just coming out."
Doous inlaid with ivory and gilt are now considered iudispensible in stylish modern dwellings.
THE people on Mulberry street don't want that street graded, nor editor's comments about the same.
THE new lamp posts havebeeu erected in front of the Opera House, though the lamps have not yet been placed in position. "JKNICINS" will attend the Italian Op: this evening.—Journal.
What paper will "Jenkins" represent, "Jeemes?"
IN San Francisco the compositors embrace many ladies. In this city it is different—'.he ladies embrace the compositors.
THE water in the Wabash is rising quite rapidly, and there is every indication that it will overflow its banks on the other side of the river in a few days.
THERE will be interesting services at the First -Presbyterian Church this evening, and each evening of this veek. Seats free to those holding Nilsson tickets, as well as other folks.
OHJUCT FOR SYMPATHY—Those of our city bellqs who endured all the horrors of sleeping with their "hair done up in rags" last night, preparatory to going to the Nilsson Concert this evening.
CHRISTIAN CHAPEL,on Mulberry street, between Sixth and Seventh. Sermon this evening by the Pastor, at seven o'clock. Subject: "Christ Gracious Invitation." A cordial invitation is extended to all.
ENTERPRISE.—One of the principal features of enterprise on the part of our business men is manifested by Herz & Arnold, 911 Main street, who always have the very latest and best style of goods that dertains to their line of trade, which they sell at the lowest price?. Head their advertisement and give them a call.
WHAT a brainless young suob will do for the sake of keeping up appearances was exemplified a few evenings since in the case of a socially-inclined youth, who was so hard run for funds with which to liquidate carriage-hire, that he called a "friend and proposed to "spout" his diamond ring for the amount of ten dollars, that sum being demanded by an insatiate jehu for his services, •-.
ARTISTIC—We notice a sign for "Steintfay & Gabler's Pianos" over the Postoffice door, paiuted by Ban- & Yeakle, which is really an artistic piece of woik. It is most admirably painted, ami is a good advertisement of the skill of these enterprising and industrious mechanics.
By the way, Barr & Yeakle have moved their shop in Cory's new building on Fifth street, between Main and Ohio, where they are prepared to do more work like the above, and on the shortest notice and most .reasonable terms. 1
AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.—The stockholders of the Vigo Agricultural Society met in this city last Saturday and elected the following gentlemen, as a Board of Directors: Thomas Dowling, I^nns Moyier, John J. Fcricl, H. McMutile, A» B. Fouts, -«David PoKh, Jos. Gilbert. v" r/*«hin^' M. M.:'Hickcox,i F-- Sheets, Wm. It. Hunter, O. C. Smoek.
With the exception of Messrs. DowJerreli and Gilbert, fc'.iis is an ei 9^*^guard. The Directors will hold —^Ll^ ^turday next for the pur-
ft tl Cliaillu at the Opera House. Avery fair audience composed largely of children, assembled at the Opera House last evening to hear the daring and intrepid traveler and adventurer, Paul Du Chaillu relate his experiences in the wilds of Africa.
The lecturer was introduced by Mr. C. C. Oakey, and made his obeisance to the audience as only a native born Frenchman can, and proceeded at once to detail incidents of his adventures with the wild tribes of the heathen Africans, whom he describes as very superstitious, believing himself a spirit, possessed of superhuman powers.
He went on in a very humorous strain to describe their manners and customs, the chief characteristics being an inborn desire on the part of the men to possess as many wives aspossble, to illustrate which he said thac one tribe, anxious to have him remain with them, and supposing him possessed with the same weakness for wives as themselves offered him his choice of 853 women for his wife, which he evaded by telling the King that the rest would be jealous and which the King proposed to remedy, after consultation with the weraeu, by his taking all of them. This, the speaker said, was a "clincher," as lawyers call it.
He further said that if there was a man in the audience who could beat that, to let him stand up. [Laughter:]
The speaker then went on to describe the various tribes and their peculiar customs, and then came down to the subject of the gorillas, described their very men tels and referred to charts, which he displayed to the audience, of the skeleton of a human and also a gorilla, and entered into a comparative anatomy of the two, averting that they were the same in nearly every particular physically, having "bone for bone," but that mentally as a matter of course, they were inferior only possessing brains of about 38 cubic inches, while the largest brains of which science has any record, was those of Sir
Walter Scott, which was 115 cubic inches, and the great French naturalist Baron Cuvier, which was 114. The lec turer also described his sensations upon first beholding one of the Gorillas as being of terror and amazement. The lecture was full of thrilling interest and replete with useful information, though the distinguished traveler's deliv ery is of a conversational style, and having but poor control of the Euglish language, his lecture was shorn of muqh of its attractiveness. May ho come again.

AN IMPOSTER.—Some months since a blind man named Young whose front name we believe is John made his advent into this city, from whence your deponent sayeth not, and presented letters to the pastor of Cente nary M. E. Church, commending himself as an unfortunate Christian gentlemen and presenting him to the church as worthy object of charity. The kind-heart-ed pastor then stated his case to the audi ence, who raised him quite a liberal sum which he invested in "benzine" and "dish-water literature," the former of which he drank, and the latter he vended about the streets.
The next we saw of this promising old sheep, he was appearing before our municipal courts, charged with drunken ness and disorderly conduct, for which he was placed in jail for a time, at which bitter fate he used language unbecomin a Saint. After he was discharged, we heard nothing more of him until yes terday when we learned that he is in Evansville, imposing upon the churches as he did here and we would warn the good people of that city to have nothin to do with him and advise the press to publish him as an impostor and a black guard of the deepest dye.
THE Mayor's Court, Hon. G. F. Cook erly presiding. Last night Officer Crowe arrested a man named James Melvin who resides about three miles south of town, charged with drunkenness, and placed him in jail. This morning it was discovered that a show window in the clothing establishment of Joe. Erlanger, on Main street, was broken, and several pairs of gloves were missing, five pairs of which were afterwards found on the corner of Ohio and Fifth streets. A hat was found in the store near the broken window, which proved to belong to Melvin, which led to the presumption that he had fallen through the window in his drunkenness. The officers then ushered him up into the awful presence of His Honor, who fined and costecWiim $7.50 on the charge of drunkenness, and $7 cost on the charge of breaking the window, which he did not deny. The last we seen of him, he was searching for a friend to pay his fine, accompanied by deputy Marshal Wolf. With what re suits your deponent knoweth not.
THE Criminal Court, Hon. T. B. Long presiding, convened yesterday afternoon pursuant to previous adjournment. The case of the State vs. James B. Clinton, charged with forgery, was tried by agreement of counsel, before the court, which resulted in the accused being assigned a term of two years in the penitentiary.
The case of the State vs. Annie Boyl, charged with grand larceny, was not tried as incorrectly stated in our report of yesterday, but was continued until Wednesday, of this week, on account of absent witnesses.
The Court convened this morning at the usual hour, but up to the present writing nothing haj been done but calling cafees and setting days for trial.
MANY people wonder what becomes of our street musicians during the winter season. A very few of these dispensers of cheap opera hibernate the principal proportion are migratory, like the birds. As soon as there is a promise of frost they depart for warmer regions, bfct not those to which they are too often consigned by irate humanity, tliougli it is presumed by orthodox people that the most of them will go there in the event of their "shuffling off this mortal coil."
LARCESY.—One Jacob Slultz, residing in Otter Creek township, was arrested Monday upon an indictment of the Gram* Jury, charged with the larceny of $!50I from William Morre. The court fixed his bonds at $509 for his appearance at the Criminal Court, which his father gave and the accused wm discharged
NILSSON POSTPONED.—We very much regret the following telegram which we have just received. The posponement of Nilsson is a great disappointment to our music-loving citizens, and especially to those now on their way from distant towns.
Nilsson's throat must quit getting "inflamed," or the people will get inflamed at Nilsson
