Du CirATLT.u, who is equally at home in a cannibal village, hunting the gorrilla, writing a book or delivering a lecture, will appear to-night at the Opera House. The press universally commends Du Ciiaillu, giving him a high place as a lecturer. We advise everybody, old or young, to hear Du Chaillu thiseveuiug.
daylight Sunday
morning some enterprising thief or thieves effected an entrance into the grocery establishment of Dan. Miller, on North Fourth street, ami carried or rolled a barrel of flour into an alley nearby and took out about one-third of the contents, leaving the barrel and the remainder for Daniel. They, probably thought Dan kept the best of the flour on top or they would have taken it all.
ATTEMPTED BONGLAKY.—Somescoun
drel, not having the fear of the Lord and the "Cops" in his heart, or mind at least made an attempt to burglarize the establishment ofT. II. Riddle, on Main street, last night, but was interrupted by a lady who was coming up out of the basement of the building, and discovered a man standing on the steps of the btck door, evidently prospecting for a means of effecting an entrance. Upon being discovered, he left only about three impressions of a No. 14 boots in the snow, from the door to the alley.
man named Allgood,
who if report be true, has not a very suggestive cognomen, was arrested on Main street by Officers Yost and Sibley Saturday night, charged with the larceny of a chain and ring from a fellow boarder at Starke's boarding house. The officers committed him to jail until this morning when lie was taken before Mayor Cookerly, where a preliminary examination was had, which resulted in His Honor holding him to bail in the sum of $500, in default of which he was remanded to tbe "tombs" to await the potion of the Giwd J"V- ,r
Gough nt the Opera House. Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather Saturday evening, quite a large and highly intelligent audience gathered in the Opera House to hear this inimitable lecturer and distinguished champion of temperance discourse on the very interesting theme of "Curiosity," and certainly no other motive than Curiosity and the great reputation of the speaker, could have induced our citizens to go through a pelting rain-storm on that evening. The lecturer was introduced by our own distinguished orator and fellow-citizen, Col. Richard YV. Thompson, in a few felicitous and well selected words.
The speaker commenced by defining curiosity as being "an inherent disposition to inquire into, investigate and search after knowledge togratifiy human nature" as an element of our natuie which is visible through all the stages of life, and which in great minds leads to grand discoveries in medial minds to the development of facts, and in little minds to minding everybodys business but their own. [Laughter.] Mr. Gough then wen ton to describe, in his own indescribable way, the idiosynocracies of some people whose curiosity is the only characteristic of their lives giving illustrations that for a time would hold his audience "spell bound" as it were, until he would finish illustrating, which would be greeted with rapturous and irrepressible laughter and applause. A full report of his lecture would give but a slight ideaof its effectiveness and interest for it is in his incomparable style of delivering more than his language, which of itself is select, noble and eloquent, that attracts his auditors. In illustrating a point by toiling an anecdote, he acts out all the parts to perfection, and we have no daubt that, had Mr. Gough, chosen the stage instead of the rostrum, in the great drama of life, he would have been one of the great stars of the world. x\.s a lecturer he has no superior on this continent and but few if any peers. His train of thought is so plain and simple that it can be followed by all ordinary minds, while at the same time, the mightiest intellect can grasp ideas from his lectures that common minds will fail entirely to comprehend.
The lecturer closed by an eloquent appeal to young men and young women and those in mature life to abandon idle curiosity and cultivate only such curiosity as will be soul-elevating, that would gain for them the wisdom and understanding and appreciation of those higher qualities of human nature which would insure for them a higher and nobler life.
Mr. Gough was frequently and loudly applauded at the close of his eloquent Uights of oratory. The lecture was an unqualified success, and merited a larger house than it received, but as previously stated, it was owing to the unfavorable evening that the capacious Opera House was not crowded to its utmost seating capacity.
BURGLAKS IN LIMBO.—For
In about an hour after placing Allen in durance, the same officers were passing the store of
D.
C. Greiner, corner Ohic
and Third streets, when they discovered some one in the building with a darkiantern, and without much ado, went for him and succeeded in capturing two men, one of whom is the notorious Bill Stump, "the champion street light smasliist of the buck-board city," and the other proves to be one Curtis Envin, who made his "iirst and only appearance" at the "Academy of Music" that same eventful night. He is said to be a tight rope performer of the first water, and is also said to be an expert in jumping through small hoops, and we should judge that lie is an eminent success in getting through a keyhole.
He will perform this week in the jail, where there is but little doubt that some of those svho witnessed his performances of last Saturday evening at the Academy will have an opportunity of being favored again before the close of the week. And we would suggest to those who wish to witness his feat, that they will be in about as good company, and surrounded oy better influences in that institution, than at the Fifth street nuisance.
All three of these men were arraigned before Mayor Cookerly this morning, who held them to bail in the sum of $1,000 on a charge of larceny, in default of which they were all remanded to jail to await the action of the Grand Jury.

TIIE McAvoy Oombination, which recently performed at our Opera House to a beautiful array of empty chairs, has disorganized through a demoralization on the part of the public in not appreciating the fact that talents of gold and silver are highly necessary to sustain histrionic talent, and therefore failed to contribute their wealth. Fred and his estimable lady are playing "WilkinsMicawber" at Crawfordsville. Mr. J. C. several
weeks there has bseii scarcely a night that some of our people have not been visited by one or more of these midnight marauders, who under cover of darkness seek to carry off their worldly effects, contrary to the command which says, "thou shalt not steal." Saturday night, about half-past 12 o'clock, as Officers Crowe, Vaudever and Hayward were coming up Main street from towards the river, they heard a dog barking, either in, or in the vicinity of Andrew's boot and shoe store, which attracted their attention. They cautiously proceeded around in the rear of the building and under cover of the intense darkness, succeeded in approaching close enough to discover a couple of men with a dark lantern attempting to effect an entrance through the door of that establishment, though it has been since admitted by them, we understand, that their design was to effect an entrance into Tuttle's Tea store, but in going to the rear of the building, missed the door. Vandever and Hayward then carefully approached the burglars, while Crowe remained out in the alley near by ready to light on any others who might seek to make their escape. As the officers named advanced, the two men who were trying to effect an entrance to the building, undertook to give leg bail, one of whom was nabbed, and the other, no doubt, impressed with the exigencies of the moment, ran for life and liberty, followed by a couple of shots from Vandever's and Ilayward's revolvers, which did not bring him to the ground. Owing to the darkness that prevailed, the officers could not fire with any certainty. The man's name who was arrested is John Allen.
