WH cannot credit the report that the lisht-ries' question is to be settled ly acquiescence in a modification of the Canadian law, without reference to the terms of the treaty, or the construction put upon it ly the provincial authorities. We hope for better things. The President has raised a \"ry important question, and one to which the experience of the last fishing season lend more than local interest and on every ground it is desirable that the occasion shall be used to remove long-standing sources of irritation, and to adjust the diMerences between Auicrican and colonial fishermen on the only enduring basis—that of justice. The laws complaine'd of, and the pretensions which in times past have proved so annoying, are the legitimate products of the Treaty of ISIS, as interpreted by the Provinces. What is necessary is, either a common understanding, resting upon a more equitable interpretation, or a new treaty, whose terms shall not be open to controversy. Any other settlement will be a farce.—iV. Times.

An Alteration of the Lord's Prayer. A few years ago nothing would have seemed more improbable than the deliberate alteration, by an authoritative body of Christian elerygyman and orthodox biblical scholars, of the phraseology and meaning of the Lord's prayer, yet such has been the case. The New Testament revisionists, now in session in London, have voted that the literal translation of the phrase "deliver us froui evil," should be "deliver us from the evil one," and they have decided to expunge the doxology at the end of the prayer, as absent from all the earlier manuscripts. Thus shorn and altered, the great prayer of the ages will sound unfamiliar indeed.

Tins depression which pervades S.m Francisco, and a large part oi California, is yielding some wholesome fruit. The rascality that has characterized the man agement of mining interests in that Slate and Nevada is being exposed with a particularity which should suggest to Eastern people the general inexpediency of risking their money in remote mining enterprises. The Lake Superior copper companies have, in their day furnisned some striking lessons upon this sub ject. But tlTere is a fascination in gold and silver mining whic'h renders warning words continually necessary. According to oneSan Francisco journal, there are in tii--it city "Kings" as unscrupulous as the worst ever warmed into life by Wall street intrigue. Really valuable mines are so manipulated that weak and distant stockholders are starved and frightened out by frequent assessments. Other stocks are "bulled" by paying dividends with borrowed money, and other devices, until a high figure is reached—and then the operators quietly unload. Gould & Curry was run up a few years ago to §4,000 per share the sharpers who had control sold out what they had, and the price tumbled down immediately. It is now quoted at $47.50. The Crown Point, which was forced up to $14. now brings but $3. Dozens of other companies might be named which have dropped altogether out of sight— bit not until the sharpers had filled their pocket*. Colorado supplies instances (scarcely less notable.

Jr has often been said that in thi country everybody considers himself competent to edit a newspaper. Another popular fallacy is that anybody can mana.sa a t.!iea'rical company. A thriving banker named Knightly, who lives in the little town of Grecncastle, Ind., Jias gained some valuable experience on this subject. Mr. Knightly possesses wealth and also ambition. His ambition has taken the curious direction of seeking prolit and distinction through the proprietorship of a strolling theatrical establishment. He organized a company, consisting of sixteen ladies and gentlemen of the dramatic profession, selected from the most renowned theatres of Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Peoria, started it on a tour through the towns of Indiana and Illinois, and then expectantly waited for the returns of his enterprise. They soon came, but in the shape of drafts tor money instead of fat packages of greenbacks, as he had anticipated. He continued to wait, and the drafts continued to arrive, until, disgusted at the turn matters hap taken, he finally concluded to pay no further attention to the presistent calls tor funds. In consequence of the stoppage of supplies his company discontinued their performances, and at the last accounts its members were lying oil' in clover at a St. Louis hotel awaiting further orders. As the Thespians had traveled before, they had taken care to have written contracts signed guaranteeing them good salaries and all their expenses for a season of six months and as the banker-manager is perfectly responsible, they are quite satisfied with the situation, confident that they will ultimately get their money, whether they work or play, or rather if they do not work or play, the terms beimr synonymous in theatrical parlance. —Ar. This queer beast enacts the part of a monkey to the life. It crawls over the back of the chair to which it is chained, chatters and grius, and comports itself after the sim ian fashion. The mistress of the house in which it was found acknowledges herself to be the mother of this strange creature. The man monkey is several years old, and is ehatied to the chair for the purpose of keeping is out of mischief.

JUDGE OKTH, of Indiana, a revenue reformer ef the most decided type, has been appointed to succeed. Mr. Schenck as a member of the Committe of Ways and Means. The appointment is a good one, and the only regret is that Judge Orth will not be a member of the next Congress, and be reappointed at the next session In the original selection of this committee, Speaker Blaine appointed Mr. Orth, but the latter declined, and was transferred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs. The place thus vacated was filled by a protectionist. Washington dispatches state that the reappoint-

ment of Mr. Orth has disgusted the high tariff faction exceedingly.—Chicago Iribune.

upon the pit of the stomach of a child, will cause the bowels to be emptied, and alloes kept in contact with a raw surface will produce same effect as if the medicine had been taken into the stomach. So said the great Dr. Clutterback. Very many persons know the operation of croton oil when placed upon the tongue, to say the least, it is speedy. Purgatives in some sha e, are indispensable in the practice of medicine. Many diseases are incurable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get one which has either laxative or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This lias at last been done.

EDWARD WILDER'S FAM

fulfill all the requirements of the

case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative yet mild. In small doses, they meet the lirst want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but whatever quantity given, they create no neessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, butle&ve it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suiters from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched with lever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.

Ilelmintliology.

A distinguished physiologist hasdeclared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should bepeoplfd with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The history of Ilelmintliology abounds in illustrations of the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men, their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ot the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest from the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safely and permanently expelling them irom the human sytem. EDWAKD WlLDEJi'S MOTHER'S WORM SVltUP is a true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in its presense. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this deiightful syrup.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested the nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before him, lie was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning their treatment. The youngest physician to-day ltnows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilder"$ Compound Extract of Wild Cherry, and knows that with the use of this truly great medicine he is fully master of the situation. He has no fear in the presence of croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis he grapples wtth consumption, and subdues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluable medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

"Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood,'"' is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in the book of na ture. It is self evident that the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edward Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distil led whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality of the disorder by a corresponding speciality ol cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health

Gaudiamia River.

The British army wnen it advanced on Talavara and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into the plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands! All Europe believed that the imadine army was extirpated. Yet malarial diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sick' aning influence of miasm. The three great actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. The tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil flian any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a mcdicine which will overcome their pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary to have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with Edward Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case.
