Johns, in the Common Pleas Court, which mention was made in our issue of yesterday, found a verdict of §279.58

for

the plaintiffs, whereupon the defendants made a motion for anew trial. Tiik

the first

appearance of this, the most noted and popular singer in the world, in the Opera House, in this city.nextTuesday evening, is the all-absorbing topic of conversation among all classes of our citizens, wre clip the following notice from one of the leading papers of the great metropolis of this western world, to show how she was received and appreciated there: 'iliil-i

There was another gay time at Stein way Hall last evening. Everybody was "gav and liappy." Strakosch was happy, the audience were happy, and the artists were all in their happiest moods. It was the usual thinsratthe Nilsson concert—a grand success lor the artists, and a gorgeous time for all those who had the pleasure of listening to them.

Of course, Nilsson was tho main attraction. Everybody was impatient to get a sight of that superb figure and hear that superb voice. The other artists were, in their turn, flatteringly received, but the grand ovation was reserved for the "Sweedish Nightengale." She made her first appearance in Ave Maria—not the delicious Ave Maria of Gounod, but in that of Schubert, which was equally well adapted for her sweet, liquid voice. "She came up smiling," as the gentlemen of the ring are also supposed to do, and was attired, as usual in a most elegant dress. It was composed of blue silk, and made apron front of satin, and with several small flounces of the same material. They were elegantly embroidered in Marguerite pattern, and edged with point lace. The corsage was cut low, a.id trimmed in similar manner. The train was long, and also trimmed with satin and point lace. Her hair was becomingly arranged and or nainented with diamonds. She also wore a most brilliant necklace of the same rare jewels. She was, of course, encored, and gave her simple little Swedish ballad in a most touching manner. "Casta Diva" was her second piece, and afforded her an opportunity to put to rest the sneers of certain artists who habitually prate about her "lost voice." She never sang with more effect that in this same "Casta Dava" from Norma. Iler voice rang out fresh and pure, and at times with the most touching sweetness. Heronly appearance in the second part was to sing the valse "Les Bluets," in which she also created unbounded enthusiasm.

The sale of tickets will commence next Saturday morning at Bartlett & Co.'s book store, commencing at 9 A. M. Be on hand early if you wish to get a ticket to any part of the house, for from present indications, the house will be crowded to its utmost capacity upon that eventful occasion.

A

SUSPICIOUS CHARACTER.—A

ARSON.—A

couple

of our city officials were silently perambulating about our streets last evening, enjoying a quiet walk, when not far from the Terre Haute House, on Seventh street, they observed a woman out in the middle of the street, evidently much frightened, trying to make her escape unobserved by them, looking back over her shoulder in a very mysterious manner The two officials, who are not policemen, thought they would give chase, as the woman had evidently done something wrong and was trying to make her escape. After a lively foot race they brought up with the now truly frightened damsel and demanded of her a reason for her strange and suspicious conduct, and as suring her that they were positive she had been guilty of some crime and that she must give some account of herself or they would have her placed under ar rest. She asserted her innocence and said that she was only "a little scared, that she lived in the country and belonged to the Methodist church that her mother and herself had started to Brazil and that becoming separated, her mother had left her here, and, that she had no money, and must walk to that town. Upon these assurances, the gentlemen allowed her to go on her way rejoicing, which she did at a lively gait, not altogether unlike Deiter in point of speed.

street for

repair, and thoroughly reconstructed. It remains with the property holders in that neighborhood to say by their action whether the change shall be made or no.— Indianapolis News.

The building is now occupied as a low "variety theater," something after the style of the "Academy of Music" in this city and we think the Young Men's Christian Association ot Indianapolis are doing a noble work when they purchase that low den of infamy and devote it to the service of the Lord, instead of the devil, as it now is.

Can't a Young Men's Christian Association be organized in Terre Haute, that will purchase the "Academy of Musio" on Fifth street, and thus rid the city of an institution that is dragging more young men down to infamy than all the other evils of the city combined. If such an organization could be perfected, and this one object be accomplished thereby, it would be well worthy of the effort.

MARRIED

HIS

WIFE.—A

named Kinuele, yesterday put in an appearance before one of our Justices and married his own wife, under the following cirouuistances: They were first married in Germany some twenty years since and came to this country, where they lived together in the conjugal relation, and all seemed joy and happiness, until, about six weeks since they did as lovers are said to do sometimes—they quarreled and parted—and one of the parties instituted proceedings for divorce, which is now pending. Meanwhile, condidering the cost of a divorce, and the uncertainties of single blessed uess during the cold months of winter, they compromised and re-resolved to.be "bone of one bone and flesh of one flesh," with which intent they called on a Jus tice and the twain were made one—aud are no doubt happy. We hope so.

FOUND LODGING.—Officer

LARGE SALE.—The

young man named Ste

phen Shea, and residing on Third street, was arrested by Constable Kaufman yes-' terday, on complaint of his own father, charged with trying to fire his father's house. The young man was taken before Justice Smith, where a preliminary examination was had which resulted in the

Squire fixing his bail at $200, iu default of which the accused was committed to jail to await the action of the Grand Jury.
