TIIE Journal, of this morning, contains the remarks of the ITon. Wm. Macn, npon assuming the duties of speaker oi the House. It is an able cfTorfc and worthy (he talented gentleman who delivered it.
FOURTEEN persons now enjoy the hospitalities of the Vigo bastilo, all charged -with o(Tenses against the laws of the State. Their cases are all receiving the assiduous attention of His Honor Judge Long, and his able Prosecutor, Sant C. Davis.
PERSONAL.—Prof. O'Kane, the noted musician, of Delaware, Ohio, who is to conduct the Sacred Concert atDowling Hall, on Tuesday evening of next week, arrived in this city this afternoon.
Mayor Cookerly returned from Indian apoiis this morning. Photographer Ilusher is quite sick.
CHANGE OF TIME.—Tho Indianapolis A- St. Louis Kailroad change time on tomorrow. A Mattoon, Terre Haute & .Indianapolis Accommodation will be put on, arriving here at 10:lo A. M. This will enable persons living west or east of here to come to Terre Haute, do their trading and return home the same day. See time-table elsewhere.
BREACH OF PROMISE.—An interesting breach of promise suit is now pending in the Vigo Circuit Court, having been recorded on the books of that court Jan. 5th, 1S71. This case is one in which the fair Plaintiff, Mrs. Mary Humaston, sues Mr. Alexander McGregor, a prominent and wealthy gentleman, claiming damagestu the amount of $25,000. The parties all reside in this city.
THE Criminal Court, Hon. Thomas B. Tjong presiding, convened yesterday afternoon, pursuant to previous adjournment.
The case of the State }•.?. John Hay charged with obtaining ntoney under f.dse pretenses was called and tried bv the court. The evidence was heard and c-se continued until to-day, and at the time of writing this report no judgment had been rendered.
The case of the State

John Ryan and the irrepressiole Magoje Dean were then arraigned, before the ourt, charged villi larceny, and both entered pleas of not guilty.
TTTE Royal Japanese Troupe of Prince Satsuma opened out their engagement for a season of two nights and one matinee in the Opera House, iastnignt, before tho lurgeest audiences of ladies and gentlemen, that has honored that noble structure since the first appearance of John E. Owens, upon the occasion of its dedication. The performance was the most interesting, wonderful and indescribable that it has ever been our fortune to witness. We cannot speak with special reierence to anyone act or peifoimance without doing an injustice to all the rest, unless it be of the wonderful and daring feats of lit tie "All Right," who, whatever perilous feats he undertook, invariably came out
"cdl ri(ihf.
The en
tire performance was a brilliant success, and each feat was performed in a way "that was peculiar" to the heathen Japanese, and can only be appreciated oy being witnessed. Some of then" most daring and seemingly reckless feats kept the audience in breathless suspense during their execution, which suspense would be relieved by long continued applause at their successful termination
This afternoon they are giving a matinee to a well tiled and highly appreciative house, at which they perform with their accustomed skill.
To-night will be their last appearance in this city, upon which occasion there will be an entire change of programme Let there be a full house to greet them Tickets can be secured at B. G. Cox & Co.'s book store.
CREDIT.—Many persons suppose that men engaged in business in a town or city never have any use for money. They get trusted for goods and promise to pay in 30, GO, or 00 days, and not one in ten ever redeem their promise. Merchants and others engaged in business of any sort, are compelled to meet the demands made upon them for their stock promptly and they must pay up, or they receive visit from the sheriff', have their places of business closed up, and perhaps ruined. Many a good man has been ruined in this way, all because he trusted his goods and wares out to men who promised to pay "in a few days." This thing is all wrong. Men engaged in business arc continually annoyed in this way. Many farmers, we are sorry to say, seem to think that business men are made of money and can wait for their pay until they sec fit to pay it. This is a mistake, and if we are to judge from the number of "duns" we have printed for our merchants within the last two week-', somebody will be obliged to "shell out" soon or do worse. We believe it pork was worth S20 a hundred and wheat $4 a bushel, some would hold it for higher figures, and keep their creditors out of the money that should have been paid long ago.
MACARTHY'S MINSTRELS.—As the Ilarry Macarthy Minstrels appear in this city and play at tho Opera House on Monday and Tuesday nights of next week, we transfer to our columns the following notice from the Evansviiie Journal of yesterday, they having closed their engagement in that city last evening: "When the public were promised a much improved entertainment by Macarthy and his Troupe of Minstrels, the extent ot the improvement was not known, but after witnessing tho performance last night it is sufficient to say that tho half was not told. 1 lie Minstrel Troupe have improved by becoming accustomed to each other, so that they are now first-class. The orchestra and the band are improved by the addition of anew player of great merit. The pieces chosen were generally better, but Ilarry Macarthy has not improved a bit, for being born a genius and bred an actor he attained perfection long ago and Mrs. Macarthj-, who did not appear during their last visit, lent an additional attraction to tho entertainment by her excellent acting, singing and dancing. Pilly Diamond, the
Boney'of the troupe, is a new addition, but Sam. Gardner's excellent bass has the same old familiar ring. They play again to-night."
THE great Sacred Mucic Concert at Dowling Hall, on Tuesday evening, the 10th instant, under the leadership of the distinguished Prof. O'Kane, of Delaware, Ohio, assisted by the musical talent of this city, promises to be a most delightful entertainment and a great success. Gentlemen who have heard Prof. O'Kane report him as very superior, if not unri valled, in sacred musie. He sang Nov. 22, together with 1,000 children at Cleveland, Ohio, for the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society, electrifying tiie audience. He has sent two hundred copies of the "Dew Drop" singing book for the concert on Tuesday night and will arrive in the cily this afternoon to take charge of the rehearsals. Tickets for the concert will be put at twenty-five cents, and fifty cents for reserved scats. Let Dowing Hall bo crowded upon that interesting occasion.
THE editor of the Hamilton County Register, who was hero during the session of the State Teacher's Association, speaks ns'follows of our office \t tho office of the Evening Gazelle we were cordialiv received by Mr. Rose, owe of the editors, and permitted' to look around to our heart's content. Several job presses were in operation, propelled as "our" poet says "by the power of steam. The fino little engine looks nice enough to keep in a parlor whiic the entire office is tip-top."
Of course the office is "tip-top.-' It always is, and'no better or more complete printing office can bo found in the State. And we arc prepared to do just as good work, and just as cheap as it can be done anywhere, and from the large and increasing patronage we are now receiving, wo are of tho opinion the people are beginning to llnd this out.
"THE WHEEL TURNED AROUND" is the very suggestive sub-heading of an item that appeared in this morning's Express, in which "A Friend of Biair," contradicts an item that appeared in the GAZETTE of yesterday, which stated that upon the best information we could obtain, that Mr. John Blair acknowledged that he gave those articles named in that item, to Miss Robinson, of the Academy of Music. Mr. John A. Blair admitted in the presence of His Honor, Mayor Cookerly, and others, that he gave Miss Robinson the dress patterns and the set of furs but denied that he gave her the set of jewelrw Therefore, our information was only incorrect as regards the jewelry.
AN impoverished editor *vt the West crot elected constable, but his new office did not enable him to arrest the attention of liis readers.
