City and Neighborhood.

THE inevitable overskirt- still goes on

The Circuit Court lias adjourned indefinitely. AN exchange describes a kiss as an aspiring consonant.

THE cry will soon be heard in this city, "All aboard for Newport." CITY Assessor Kerclieval entered upon the discharge of his duties to-day.

AN exchange says that the belle of Charleston, Illinois, chews tobacco.

MADISON* girls attempt to masticate torpedoes, and get their mouths shot off.

FmDAY is the most fashionable for reception day. Tuesday is the next on the list.

Go and see the "Japs" to-morrow evening and witness their wonderful performances.

TURKEYS that have lived through the holidays may reasonably expect to survive the summer.

DON'T forget that the great Macarthy Minstrels will be here Monday and Tuesday of next week.

JOHN B. GOUGII will lecture at the Opera House, in this city, on Saturday evening, January 14th.

ONE of our wits says that life is the greatest of conundrums because everybody has to give it up.

THE Grand Jury is still working away investigating the secret doings of the city and bringing them to light.

TITE evening meetings at the various churches continue with increased interest on the part of those who attend.

BAKR & YEAKLE have removed their Paint Shop to Cory's new building on Fifth street. See notice in another column.

THEpast two or three days of moderate •weather have rendered the ice very rough and almost entirely unfitfor skating purposes.

A YOUNG lady in Evansviiie will not wear a ring because it hurts her finger when any one squeezes her hands. Sensible girl that!

CENTENARY CHURCH Choir propose giving a grand concert in about two weeks. They will commence to re hearse Friday night.

A BLACK velvet collarette, mounted with the breast of a grebe, is one of the latest novelties for a lady's full costume, street or carriage costume.

MERCHANTS generally, express themselves as sanguine of a good trade duriug the coming season, much more so than at any time for the past year.

BUSINESS men throughout the city complain of a great scarcity of money. It is said to be almost impossible to make collections even of small amounts.

THERE have been about thirty thousand hogs slaughtered in this city since the packing season began. Prices range rom $5.60 to 5.75 per hundred, gross.

THE T. H. & I. R. R. shops suspended operations Monday afternoon on account of the leaking of a boiler, but they will resume operations to-day with renewed vigor.

TIIE "Jolly Ten Club" give a grand select ball at the Opera Promenade Hall this evening. It promises to be one of the most pleasant entertainments of the season.

SPURGEON thinks that some preachers would make good martyrs because they are so dry they ought to burn well. Of course we have no preachers that would make good martyrs.

SOMK enterprising thief carried, off a couple of saddles from the residence oi *Col. R. W. Thompson. The Col. is -thankful that the scoundrel did not also steal a couple of his horses. •1 Cvv&tfc

The Christian Church and I?? ion Prayer Meeting. To the Editor Tcrre Haute Gazette:'

I desire to ofFer to your readers a word of explanation. The question has been often asked: What do you think of the Union Prayer Meeting, and what is the attitude of your church toward it You are not mentioned in the published programme. Were you not invited to cooperate Did you refuse to do so ?.

In reply I have to say: I was invited to attend the meeting of the preachers in the city at which arrangements were made for the Prayer Meeting. I did not attend because I was not and could not be in the city at the time. I explained to a member of the Ministerial Association that I could not be present at the meeting referred to. I understand that the question came up in the meeting: What is the attitude of the Christian Church and its Pastor toward the Union Prayer Meeting Why an explanation was not presented at that time by the gentleman who knew the occasion of my absence, 1 of course do not know.

I said to him: Do not think because I do not meet with you that I do not desire to co-operate, such is not the case.

I am in favor of every good word and work, and if the Christian Congregation does wot co-operate with the good people of this city in an endeavor to turn men to Christ, by the help of the Lord, it shall not be the fault of its Preacher.

I submit this explanation that all who desire to do so, may understand our true position. B. B. TYLER,

Pastor of Christian Church.

TERRE HAUTE, Jan. 4, 1S71.

GOOD AEVICE. Spurgeon sen ten tiously expresses a number of thoughts "worth remembering," in the following appropriate sentences, which he published as "advice gratis:"

Nobody is more liko an honest man than a thorough rojrue. When you see a man with a great deal of religion displayed in Jiis shop window, you may depend upon it l.e keeps a very small stock within.

Do not choose your friend by his looks handsome shoes often pinch the feet. Don't believe the man who talks the most, for the mewing cats are not very good mousers.

By no means put yourself in another person's power. If you put your thumb between two grinders, they are very apt to bite.

Drink nothing without seeing it, sign nothing without reading it, and make sure that it means no more than it s:iys.

Don't co to law unless you have nothing to lose lawyer's houses are built on fools' heads.

Put no dependence on the label of a bag. and count money after your own kind. In any business never wade into the water where you cannot see the boitom.

See the sack open, before you buy what is. in it for he who trades in the dark asks to be cheated.

Keep clear of a man who does not value his own cliarater.

THE "New Varieties" at Berry's Music Hall opened out last evening with a grand flourish of trumpets, a rattling of dry bones and a gurgling of something that was not so dry.

The proprietors yesterday took out license for one evening, for which they paid £5, and then charged twenty-five cents admission, which does not warrant us in calling it tiie "free and easy." Several local "stars" were trotted out on the stage under the management of one Clay Allen, an old showist. The performance is said by some, to have been a "minstrel variety," but there seems to be a great difference of opinion regarding this, and as we were not present we will not com ment upon the performance.

Prof. Emery Partridge was chief pianist and leader of the orchestra, and one "Cliampaigne Charley" was chief "bonist."

DOG BIT.—An old gentleman, whose name wc could not learn, having occasion to pass out on Eleventh street yesterday, when nearing Locust, was at tacked by a feroeious dog, which mangled him in a frightful manner, biting a large piece out of the calf of his leg. The old man suffers intense pain, and is taking measures to bring suit for damages against the owner of the ferocious cur. Others having such guardians of property about their premises, should take warning from this, and keep them chained so that a peaceable citizen can appear on the streets without running the risk of being devoured.

A RISING young lawyer of Indianapolis was employed by a party or parties in Cincinnati not long since to collect a board bill from an Indianapolis base ball club. He collected three dollars and charged five dollars for his services and this same young lawyer is the superintendent of a Sunday school in that city. If he learns his Sunday school scholars to indulge in such stupendous speculations what will their future be? We will leave our readers to guess at his future!

A YOUNG married woman, of Fort Wayne, whoso husband celebrated his marriage by getting drunk, and has kept in that state ever since, now sues for a divorco on the ground ot "protracted festivities."—Indianapolis Sentinel.

Should all the wives in our State, and elsewhere, sue for divorce on the grounds of "protracted festivities" on the part of their husbands, the dockets of our courts would have a larger representation of divorce cases than at the present time, for the names of such husbands are legion

THEpracticabilityof the establishment of a manufactory of agricultural implements is again being agitated in this city. We hope that no effort will be spared by our citizens that will induce some enterprising individual or stock company to take this matter in hand for we know of nothing that would tend more to advance the interests and add to the prosperity of our city than the establishment of_ such a manufactory in.our midst.

THE Royal Japanese of Prince Satsuma will make their first appearance in our city at the Opera Hause to-morrow evening. They come to our city highly recommended by the press wherever they fcave been, and we are assured that those who attend will be amply repaid for the time and money spent.

LAUCESI".—A man giving his name as John Reese, was arrested by officer Hayward to-day, charged with the larceny of one coat, one pair of pants and neck comforter, from a man named John McCann, who resides at Shelburne, a small station on the E. &.C. Railroad, between this city and Sullivan. Reese was committed to jail, and the case placed iu the bands of the Grand Jury.

THE Democratic caucus last night, at Indianapolis, nominated our distinguished fellow-citizen, the Hon. Wm. Mack, for Speaker of the House and the Republican caucus nominated Hon. O. M. Wilson, of Marion. As the Democratic element predominates, there is but little doubt that Mr. Mack will be the successful candidate.
