CROAKERS.—"Nothing to do—can't make a living!" is the cry now, and has been since creation's dawn, with a certain class of people, that the times are bard, and that there is nothing to do— money is scarce, and that they can't make a living. Hundreds have saluted us in this way during the last month, and many of them will, no matter how flush the times, go complaining in this way to the end of time. It has become a chronic complaint with them. We admit the times are hard, and money very scarce, but this is no reason why people should yield to despair and spend the time allotted to labor in useless repinings of their unhappy fate. If we would suce?ed we must labor, labor unceasingly. Labor and good management arc the basis .of prosperity and success. The trouble with Terre Haute just-.now, is that she has too man}' consumers and not enough producers. Too many who are sitting by the wayside, grumbling with destiny, and too small a number with coats off and sleeves rolled up, ready to do and dare, and earn the bread they eat by honest industry, thereby benefiting themselves, their families, their neighbors, the city, and the country at large. In short, we need more workingmen and less paupers.
THAT people "stand on slippery placca" is eminently true of those who stand on our sidewalks. There is a large percentage of our people, however, that

YES.—A veteran once declared that no one knew v.'hat envy and jealousy was until he had served in the regular army. The observer probably never belonged to a church choir.
THE McAvoy Combination benefit was well attended as compared with the attendance on previous evenings, and the performance was decidedly an improvement on anything we had seen of them previously. Mr. J. C. Long's herculean performances especially, were the best we have ever witnessed of the kind. His feat of balancing a large two-horse plow with six or seven chairs suspended therefrom on his chin is truly wonderful.
