THE Court of Common Pleas was in session again this morning but nothing of interest to the general reader transpired. TLic court was occupied in hearing'a single case, an action for debt.

MAGNIFICENT frost pictures were seen in the large show windows at the Opera House this morning, rivaling in beauty the finest "frosting" in art. A number of people, cold as it was, stopped to admire them.

ONE advantage of having a Board of Public Improvements will be, that next year, the precise number of buildings erected in the city can be learned at any time, as a record of all buildings erected ..will be kept.

THE Evansville Journal accuses the GAZETTE of sneering at a puff in that paper, of one of the lawyers there. Nothing of the sort. It was a "bully" puff, forcibly written, and just to the point. What more can be said?

way of a sleigh was drawn along Main street. It was constructed of two long poles which constituted runners and shafts, and strips of wood some four feet long, being driven in the poles, and in a log of wood above, which formed the

ton which the driver sat astride. The poles were not bended at all, and only touched the ground at the rear end. The boys enjoyed the sport of chasing the concern along the street hugely.

BOLD AND DARING terday afternoon, a little a. young lady by tlie name .. hose mother keeps a bakeij shop on the corner of Fourth ana streets, appeared at the Mayor's and informed officer Wolfe that she been robbed of a muff and $29.7o. I.

Cherry oMce bad \e

accompanied the young lady to the shop, and received the particulars of the robbery,

as

p-j*

follows: She had been

out shopping and had laid her muff, containing pocket book and money, on a trunk in the shop. Shortly after two men and two women entered the shop, and while some of the party were engaged in purchasing some articles, she supposes that one of them picked up the muff. At all events she missed it as soon as the parties left

A sister of the young lady kept watcli for the parties, and when the officer arrived informed him that they had entered a saloon almost opposite on the other side of the street. Proceeding to that place, the men and women were found, each partaking of a hot whisky, and all appeared to be very much intoxicated. The officers kept a watch for them, and after leaving that place they went into a hardware store on Mam street and made some purchases, and after that into a dry goods store. On leaving that they were arrested. One of the women, the younger, gave her name as Anna Boyle, but

was

recognized

as Minerva Meisner, an old offender, and who, it is said, has only been out of the penitentiary about two months. The older woman gave her name as "VVestfall, but that is probably not her name. David Carpenter was in company with and Boyle with

the old woman, ana jsoyiu wiw the other. On taking them tb the Mayor's office, the young woman proposed that she be searched, but finding that it was the intention to do so, refused but finally the search was made, and between $15 and $16 in cash found on her person, part of which was identified by the loser as liei own. Before the search was made, and while the officers were not watching her, she picked up a fire shovel in the Mayor's office, and stepping out at the door ran for dear life, but was recaptured in the alley back of tlie Court House. The Mayor committed her to jail, for the night. The parties live about three miles east of the city. This morning she was taken out and a preliminary examination had.

The examination commenced at 10 o'clock, A. M., and continued until near 2 P. M. Mr. Allen, of the firm of Mack & Allen, appeared for the defense, and Sant. C. Davis for the prosecution. The young lady from whom the money was stolen, swore positively to the identity of several of the bills, and her sister swore that the accused seated herself on the trunk where the muff was. She was held to bail in the sum of $500 to appear at a higher court, in default of which she was sent to jail.

OrERA HOUSE.—An audience quite respectable in numbers attended the Opera House last night, notwithstanding the extreme cold weather, and the slippery condition of the sidewalks. Mr. Owens' particular role is comedey, and he has been pronounced an actor of superior merit, by the best critics. Last night he appeared in the comedy entitled "Married Life," which was presented to the satisfaction of the audience, and afterward in "Solon Shingle" in which he gave the audience a fair exhibition of his acting, in the highest degree pleasing to all. We can but regret that Mr. Owens had not been here under more favorable auspices. He would then have had larger audiences, for certainly he is an actor of high merit, and in his partic* ular characters is excelled by but few if any on the stage. To-night, Mr. Owens will appear for the last time at the Opera House under the present engagement, in "Paul Pry" and the "Live Indian," a bill full of humor, and in the highest degree attractive. Remember that the price of seats has been reduced, and we hope the Opera House will be filled. This is due from our peo-. pie to the Opera'House Company, who have erected such a grand structure. 's

YESTERDAY evening a countryman left his team, attached to a wagon, standing at the corner of Main and Firth streets. The horses became frightened and began to run. A boy aged about twelve years caught one of the animals' bridle, and hung on until he stopped them. He was dragged almost a half a square, and had he loosened his hold, the wagon would perhaps have passed over his body. Fortunately he was not injured in the least. Certainly, persons leaving teams unhitched on the street ought to be punished. Perhaps they will be after a child or a woman has been killed by such carelessness.

YESTERDAY morning, about 2 o'clock, the residence occupied by Henry Humble, three miles from the city, and owned by Mr. J. Beal, situated on the new Indianapolis Railroad, was destroyed by fire. No insurance. The family barely escaped. Defective flue. Family poor.
