FRIGHTFUL RAILROAD ACCIDENT.
Several Persons Killed Outright.
From a gentleman who arrived in the city yesterday evening, we learn the particulars of a frightful accident, which took place night before last on the Ohio & Mississippi Railroad, at stone quarry switch, near West Shoals, Martin county. A freight train had passed into the switch, and while awaiting for the Eastward bound express passenger train, the switch tender fell asleep. The rumbling of. the coming train awakened him and he hastened to adjust the switch, being so much frightened that he forgot he had done so before he had fallen asleep. Unfortunately, he opened the way for the passenger train right into the switch, and a fearful collision took place Two ladies, whose names our informant did not learn, were killed outright, and several children fatally injured. Two messengers for the Adams Express Com pany, named respectively Zartman and Lemons, were mortally wounded. The engineer, whose name is Fitzpatrick, we believe, together with the fireman, were also so badly injured that their lives are despaired of. The conductor, one baggageman and two brakemen were reported as among the fatally injured. Besides these, a large number of others were more or less injured. The wounded were taken to Viucennes yesterday morning to be cared for and when the train arrived there, a vast crowd of people assembled at the depot. We learn that the engine and several of the cars, were a total wreck. Indeed it must have been so, as it was the Lightning Express, and was going at the rapidest rate ofspecd. We are informed that the injured parties were kindly cared for at Vincennes. A large amount of valuable express goods was totally smashed in pieces and destroyed. The entire extent of damage could not be learned.
THE evening paper is the veriest ninny in town, or it would not complain of the morning papers for not pursuing its course in toadying to the Council- Keep still and pursue your advantage, find in the course of time your list of one hundred and fifty subscribers may he increased.—
Journal.
Toadying, indeed, if you call it toadying to the Council to give a full and complete report of the proceedings for the benefit of our readers, then we are guilty. We send a man there to do this work, and pay him for it, and he does it well. You wait until the Council has adjourned, then slip around to the Clerk's notes and get what you can, costing you nothing, and call it a report, and it is report enough for any man who would take such a dirty sheet. As we have remarked before, it is an

know it, and they do not hesitate to say that the
Journal
is a dead
weight upon it. As to our circulation, we do not blame "you uns" for feeling badly for you know that fully one-half of your subscribers have stopped and commenced taking the GAZETTE, and this is what "hurts." You know, and so do your readers, that our circulation' is more than
three times
large as yours, and that while ours is rapidly increasing, yours is growing "beautifully less," and that in a few weeks more if youpnblish a daily at all, it will be for gratuitous distribution.
PERSONS whose business prevents them traveling about the city much^ would bfe surprised at the number of houses that have been erected this season. There is not perhaps a city in the State where more and better houses have been erected than in this city this season.
OF course all will go to Dowling Hall to-morrow night and se'e Prof. Haselmayer, the wonderful illusionist. His entertainment is novel and interesting in the highest.
THE following has been handed us, which we proceed to print: A STREET COJIEDY. 31 .v Belle her waterfall let drop,
As wo walked in the evening air. And a, policeman'said,as he picki-d it up, "Uh, what a fall was there!"
WEALTHY.—We heard a couple of gentleman talking yesterday, the subject of their conversation being of a man who had caused the ruin of a beautiful young girl. One of the gentleman was particularly severe on the fellow, but the other remarked, "O, he is wealthy." Exactly, and what a vast amount of villainy is covered by the words, "O, he is wealthy." 0

A GENTLEMAN gives "his experience of employing help for his wife in this city. In searching for a girl he expended $10, and agreed to pay her $1 per day. She remained four days, for whieli -he paid $4, making in all $14 for her assistance. He became disgusted with looking for hired help, and gave it up as rather expensive business, He is not the only one who has had a similar experience. .,
