MONDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1870.

GOOD JOKE.—A

about

11

o'clock, north First street, was the scene of much excitement. A man by the name of Wm. A. Waters, large, stout and well built, made an attack upon his wife, a feeble woman, with a babe not three months old. He used a club and how badly he beat the woman, we are unable to say, A gentleman hearing the cries of the lady, went to her assistance, and received a heavy blow over.the head. One ofthe clubs was large enough to knock a horse down with. After the husband had satisfied himself with beating his wife, he went to woik breaking up the dishes, the stove, and the furniture in the house, which he well nigh demolished. The neighbors sent lor a policeman, and officer AVolfe hastened to the house, but Waters ran, and at once left the city. The officer followed him to Maxsville, where he was arrested, and taken before the Mayor this morniivr. Several of hid neighbor women were witnesses in the case, and testified that beating his wife was of common occurrence with Waters. The poor woman shed tears, and even after having suffered such treatment at his hands, appeared willing to forgive him. An Irish lady who testified thought it would *lo Waters good if some good stout man would "hand him a few."- It appears to have been one of the most aggravated cases of wife beating, and the Mayor imposed a line of $25, costs added, in all some thirty odd doliars. The neighbors manifest great sympathy for the abused wife.

Joe, you have got my sow and pigs in your pen." Just about that time Joe says he had visions of departed chickens, cabbage, &c., to double the worth of the animal that had done the damage. Of course it was a mistake, and they both, after talking the matter over enjoyed the joke heartily. Our friend is not the first man, however, that has "got the wrong sow by the car."

-woman appeared before

the Mayor this morning on the charge of raising a row on Fourth street, Saturday night, threatening to kill another dark skinned damsel, &c., and was_ lined and costed $7.50. She left court to get the "spons" to liquidate the claim, but we did not learn whether she cceedcd or not.

has been decided to push the work of boring the salt well still further. The boring will commence in a short time, we are informed.

THE

24th of November has been set

apart for thanksgiving day, by order of the President.

"WHEN

the railroad on Water street is

constructed, there will be some heavy filling at the crossing of the old canal bed. The road will prove a valuable improvement when completed.

Tri jail is about full at present. Crimnal Court, which convenes the first of next month will clear that institution of boarders it is hoped.

LAST SATURDAY,

WE

NOTICE

THERE

prominent citi

zen who resides a short distance from the city, tells a good joke on himself, which he enjoys hugely. A few weeks ago a sow went to his house, with live promising pigs. He had wondered at the absence of the animals^ but at once put them in a pen. The pigs remained in the pen as well disposed young porkers always do, but the mother proved to be a most consumate thief. She broke out of the pen, ate up half a dozen chickens or more, broke •into the garden and devoured the cabbages, rooted up flower plants, sucked all the eggs she could get at, and in short became the terror of all the feathered tribe on the farm. The gentleman consoled himself with the thought that it was his hog that had done all this, and took his loss as philosophically as he could. In the mean time, the pigs were fattened, and on Saturday evening one of them slaughtered. A few moments after the pig had been hung up, a neighbor stopping at the liouso and looking into the pig pen cried out: "Halloo,

will appear at

Dowling Hall on Friday and Saturday nights, giving most interesting and pleasant entertainments. He is the best illusionist now traveling, and probably the best in the world. Be sure and see him. Matinee Saturday afternoon.

are visiting the woods on the

other side of the river daily in search of hickory nuts, pecans &c. It is said that such nuts arc abundant now, and are falling rapidly.

learn there was a good deal of indulgence in "fusil" oil on Saturday night, and that a number of "'coveys" went home as happy as big sunflowers, to feel mean and repent the next day. No arrests. ul

A X-ARGE number of sporting gentlemen went to the shooting match this afternoon. Henry Ehrenhardt took out a lot of refreshmentr, and of course all had a good time. We could not learn the result of the shooting at the hour of going to press.

A GOOD work has been commenced at Asbury Chapel under the pastoral care of Jtev. James Hill. Yesterday, six united with the church, and last night five penitents went forward to the altar of prayer, one professing reigion. Since Mr. Hil^ has came here, 22 in all have united with that church.

Hill, will remain open, and any school can increase their subscription or makes new ones, by addressing Ilev. F. I.owman, Greencastle, or Rev. L. M. Walter.-, Indianapolis, Indiana.

WE KEGIIET

to learn that on yesterday

a firs occurred at Indianapolis, by which the household property of General lumbal 1 and Wm. JJraden was principally destroyed. The loss in the two houses is estimated at $7,000. General Kimball's loss is covered by insurance. It is not known how the fire originated.

were five interments in the city

cemetery last week. Three children, one adult, and the arm of Henry Lenge, which had been taken off.

We met Capt. C. C. Genung, paymaster and engineer of the E. & C. Railroad, in the city to-day. He is here fdr the purpose of looking after matters connected with the opening of Ohio street across the track of that road.

THE Journal

says* "The evening paper

is greatly troubled about the Journal's manner of doing business." A clear mistake. Go it while you are young, and "puff" Indianapolis houses to your heart's content. Business men at home appreciate such "puffing."
