IMITATING- THE BORGIAS.

Fiendish Atttcmpt to Poison a Family— Their Milk Drugged in Mistake for that of Another Person.

The facts of a fiendish attempt, on the part of

some

person unknown, to poison

a family residing in the Eastern District, on Saturday morning of last week, have been partially made public, from which it'seems that the members thereof barely escaped a sudden taking off solely by the manner of administering the deadly dose by their unknown enemy. Mr. Jeremiah Keeler and his family, who live on Broadway, between Eighth and Ninth

streets,

were the victims in ques

tion, numbering live souls in"all, consisting of himself and wife, two sons and one daughter.

In the same house with Mr. Keeler Is another family, who have on numerous occasions been annoyed by some wretch in human form who, in revenge for some inagined wrong done him or her, has visited his wrath upon them by putting tobacco ends and other filthy substances in their milk pail, the recurrence of which practice caused them to refrain from placing a receptacle for the lacteal fluid in the usual place, and also to change the hour for the call of the man who supplied them. They also acquainted Mr. Keeler with the fact, at the same time cautioning him against placing a can under the stoop for fear his might be taken for theirs and suffer accordingly, to which to attention was paid, however, as a considerable time had elapsed since the last unwelcome visit of the person who had committed the offense. Several weeks passed, and all fear had been quieted on this score, until Saturday, when, in the course of the day, four of Mr. Iveeler's family successively complained of a nauseating feeling, and in the course of the afternoon, he and his two sons were compelled to quit work upon being taken with excessive vomiting and pains in the abdomen. They proceeded home, to find Mrs. Keeler also complaining of similar symptoms, and while in attendance upon her husband and sons that night she too was prostrated, and like them, succumbed to the overpowering effects of the drug imbibed, the cauee of which, however, they were at a total loss to account for. A physician was summoned in this emergency, who after some investigation discovered the presence of a poisonous substance in the refuse exami nod .by him, which was, in his opinion, corrosive sublimate, arsenic, or some equally noxious drug. Further inquiry, and tlie statements of the other family, led to the belief that the milk had been doctored, which is the better established by the fact that the youngest of the family, a liitle girl was entirely free irom all ailment, which is accounted for by her not having drank either tea or coffee on that day, it being her practice to drink water only. To this solely is due her escape from the extreme sickness with whieli the remaining members of the family were affected.

Who this unknown poisoner may be is a matter of earnest inquiry, and should' be thoroughly looked after by the policeat once, if for no other reason than to prevent the recurrence of so foul a deed, that may, at the second attempt prove disastrous. Nothing is known as to the identity of this would-be murderer, except from certain surmises of the other family, who escaped what they believe was intended for them. They say that some man, whom they peremptorily decline to designate, has a grudge against them for some real or fancied wrong, and at one time swore vengeance against them, and it is this person they believe that has heretofore annoyed them in the manner stated, and upon the supposition that the milk was for them, has made this outrageous attempt on the lives of an innocent family. The ultimate recovery of the victims of this ruthless act is due mainly to the excessive quantity of the dose and the fluid in which it was placed, which to some extent acted as an antidote to the poisonous substance.

India Rubber.

The belt of land around the globe, 500 'miles north and 500 miles south of the equator, abounds in trees producing the gum of India rubber. They can be tapped, it is stated, for twenty successive seasons without injury and the trees stand so close that one man can gather the sap of eighty in a day, each, tree yielding, on an average, three tabJespoonfuls daily. Forty-three thousand of these trees have been counted in a tract of country thirty miles long by eMit wide. There are in America and

JCuvop© more tliuu 150 niuiiufiictoiiGs of India rubber articles, employing some 500 operatives each, and consuming more than 10,000,000 pounds of the gum per year, and the business is considered to be still in its infancy. But to whatever extent it may increase, there will still be plenty of rubber to supply the demand.

A SENSITIVE MAN.—Ata very successful seance in Cincinnati the other night, a man burst into tears when the medium described very accurately a tall, blueeyed spirit standing by him, with light side whiskers and his hair parted in the middle. "Do vou know him?" inquired a man at his side in a sympathetic whisper. Know him! I guess I do," replied the unhappy man wiping his eyes. He was engaged to my wife. If he hadn died he would have been her husband instead of me. Oh, George, George," he murmured, in n, voice choked with emo tion, "why, why did you peg out?"

Senator Morton.

Democratic faces, that had grown suddenly round and full of smiles, when the daily papers announced that the Indiana Legislature was Democratic, became elongated when they learned that the above gentleman, had not resigned his position as United States Senator, nor even accepted the Mission to England, and that it was still his intention to represent the State of Indiana, in the Senate Halls at Washington. Their curses were not loud but deep," but as swearing does 110 good, it is presumed with equal certainty that it will do

So said the great Clutterback. Very many persons know operation of croton oil when placed upon tongue, tosay the least, it is speedy. Purga tives in some shape, are indispensable in tin practice of medicine. Many diseases are in curable without them and all of the simple disorders of the system are benefitted by their use. The great desideratum in their administration has been to get one which lias either laxa tive or purgative, as was needed—always mild but always efficient—and the use of which did not make it necessary to continue its use. This has at last been done.

case. They area laxative, yet sure purgative, yet mild. In small doses, they meet the first want in large doses, they fulfill the latter but in whatever quantity given, they create no necessity for they create no morbid state of the alimentary canal tube, but leave it cleansed and urge it to renewed health. They are, in brief, a blessing to the individual who suffers from constipation and needs a laxative, and are indispensable to him who is parched witn fever and requires a purgative. Use them, all you who value health.

Helmintliology.

A distinguished physiologist has declared that it seems to be a principle of nature that every situation capable of supporting organic bodies should be peopled with them. The huge whale is often driven to madess by an almost invisible member of the tribe of vermes. The history of Helminthology absunds in illustrations ol the influence of worms in the production of disease and in the exasperation of their symptoms. The frequency of worms in the bodies of men, their obviousness to the senses, together with their common connection with enfeebled and morbid states ol the animal economy, all tend to render them an object of interest Irom the remotest periods. The very ablest minds have been devoted to the study of these entoza with the view of discovering some substance which was capable of speedily, safelyand permanently expelling them irom tlie human sytem.

ED

WILDEK'S MOTHER'S WORM SYRUP

is a

true vermicide, a geunine worm destroyer, a bona fide vermifuge. Its taste is delightful, its effects are quick, its results unfailing. It is free from danger. No intestinal worm can live in its presense. Mothers! destroy the worms which infest your little ones, with this deiightful syrup.

Dr. Laennec.

This renowned Frenchman did more perhaps to clear up the mysteries which before his time had invested tlie nature of chest diseases than any other physician who ever lived. Yet with all his skill in detecting the nature and form of the malady before him, he was sadly deficient in his knowledge of remedies. He drew vivid pictures of coughs, colds, pleurisy, consumption, croup, bronchitis, catarrhs and all the affections of the air passages still he left but few words concerning tlieir treatment. The youngest physician to-day knows better how to manage any one of these chest troubles he knows the value of the wild cherry he is acquainted with its supreme virtues he is aware of the many potent agents which enter into the combination of Edward Wilder.1 Compound Extract of Wild Chary, and knows that with the use of this truly great medicine he is fully master of the situation, He has no fear in the presence of croup, no misgivings at the advance of bronchitis

wtth consumption, and sub

dues every cough, cold, or catarrh. Hence every family should always have this invaluable medicine at hand.

Indigestion,

"Which makes sleep a pain, and turns its balm to wormwood," is, we all know, the most, common of all the disorders of the stomach. It is also the most obstinate. It has been.the most written about. No disease presents such various, contrary, and incompatible symptoms. They contradict all the laws of order, constancy and inconsistency, which regulate natural events they bother the doctor, and can only be read by him who is skilled in th#bookof nature. It is self evident tha't the different forms of indigestion are to be met by corresponding methods of cure. It has been said that the perfection of medical skill is the talent of applying to each individual case its precise and as it were, its individual cure. This is the object which every conscientious physician pursues unceasingly, and never can rest satisfied until he has overtaken. Edivard Wilder's Stomach Bitters, their body being the purest of copper-distilled whisky, makes this object attainable alike to all. They area specific—the disease specifying the remedy, not the remedy the disease. They are a combination of substances which meet the speciality ot the disorder by a corresponding speciality ot cure. They should be kept in every well-regu-lated family they are indispensable to health.

Gaudianna River.

The British army when it advanced 011 Talavura and fought the celebrated battle, which was followed by a retreat into tlie plains, lost more men by the malarial diseases contracted on the banks of the Gaudiana than by the bullets of the enemy. They died by thousands," All Europe believed that the in1!ading army

was

extirpated. Yet malarial diseases are no more common in Europe than in our own country they exist throughout the length and breadth of our land—everywhere at some time and in some shape are we made to feel the sickening inlluence of miasm. The three great actors in this equation of disease are solar heat, moisture, and vegetable decomposition. Tlie tiio, if separated, are harmless together they are more potent for evil than any other known agents so long as they exist, just so long will we have need of a medicine which will overcome tlieir pernicious effects, so long will it be necessary lo have a remedy capable of meeting and beating the insidious enemy. Of all known agents for this purpose, none is to compare with

Edivard Wilder's Chill Tonic, the master of every form aud variety and grade and degree of malarial disease and of miasmatic poison. Try it, all you who are suffering from any form of ague and fever or chills and fever, as a cure is guaranteed in every case. 'v

A considerable portion of the building is set apart for patients suffering with diseases of the skin, and every patient, old or young, i.s taking potash in some shape, and Honduras sarsaparilja in sonic form. They were esteemed by the renowned physicians who had tharge of the skin department as well-specific in almost every variety of cutaneous disease, whether of rheumatic or scrofulous or simple origin. They were given in tetter, ringworm, nettle-asli, roseasli, pimples, scrofula, ulcers, old sores, falling of the hair, etc. In all they did good, in most they effected a cure. But it has remained for Edward Wilder's Sarsajxirilla and Potash to perform the most remarkable cures awarded to any known medicine. ed in the (a Medal,) end "honorable mention at Paris Exposition." Guai--anteed more durable, and to make more steam with less fuel than any other Bar in use.

The superiority of these Bars over others is owing to the distribution of the metal in such a manner that all strain in consequence ot expansion from heat is relieved, so that they will neither warp nor breuk. They give, also, more air suifaee for draft, and are at least one-tliiid lighter than anv other Bars, and save 15 to K0 per cent, in fuel. 'They are now in use in more than places, comprising some ol largest steamships, steamboats and manufacturing companies in the United States. No alternation of Furnace required. BARBAROUX & CO.,
