To Fishermen.
BY J. S. DARK.
Way down 'neath the shade of some cooling retreat, Where the sun-shine in Summer ne'er looks On the bank of the stream, with your tackle complete,
Have you patiently watched fora bite at your hooks ?. And the time you thus spent has it gone the air
That surrounded you then, with no blessings conferred Or did sober Reflection commune with you there,
Entertaining the while with his truth-telling word
Did you see yourself painting in colors so true, The deceptions of man by his fellows each day, As the bait-hidden hook in the water you threw
To illude and to capture an unwary prey
Like the boys at the brook,in continual strife. Which the largest and most of the fish shall obtain, All along on the shore of the river of life,
With their bait-lildden hooks, stand fishing for gain. The Doctor, and Lawyer, and Merchant, incline,
While Mechanic and Farmer all put in their time, To array in deception the hook on their "line,"
And catch from the pocket th' adorable dime.
From the London Lancet.
THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN.
The Story Told of the Headless Rider not an Impossibility. At the battle of Woerth it is said that at the third charge of the cuirassiers a horse was to be seen going at full speed, with a headless rider. The mutilated corpse was that of M. de la Futzun de Lacorre, Colonel of the Third Regiment of French Cuirassiers, who had been decapitated by a cannon ball. Most people on reading this would declare that it was a mere sensation paragraph totally devoid of truth. Such an occurrence, however, would not by any means seem to be an impossibility. Not long ago we directed our readers' attention to an interesting article published by Dr. Brinton, surgeon to the Philadelphia Hospital, on the instantaneous rigidity which forms the occasional accompaniment of a sudden and violent death, such as results from woundsof the head or heart. The startling phenomenon sometimes seen on afield of battle of the retention in death of the last attitude in life, has notescaped the observations of military surgeons, although the facts connected therewith have not been studied with the attention they deserve.
Those who are familiar with the descriptions that were given of the Crimean battlefields, particularly that of Inkerman, will remember that the various attitudes and the expression of the features of the dead were dwelt upon. The report of M. Chenu contains a short account of the attitudes of the dead in battle during the Crimean and the Italian campaigns. At Magenta, a Hungarian huzzar, killed at the same time as his horse, remained almost in the saddle, resting on his right side, the point of his sabre carried forward, as at the charge. This rigidity generally follows sudden and sudden death, but not invariably. Dr. Brinton, among his cases, gives one of a very striking kind. He says that a man wounded in the left breast at Belmont, Missouri, found a stray mule, which he succeeded in mounting. While in the act of riding the mule he died but his corpse retained the upright mounted position, and on it becoming necessary to appropriate to the use of a living wounded soldier, the body was found to be so firmly and rigidly set as to demand a certain amount of positive force to free the mule from the clasp of the legs. Dr. Brinton is led to conclude from his own observations, and those of others, that this battlefield rigidity is developed at the moment of death, and that the cadaveric attitudes are those of the last moment and act of life.
The French Crown Diamonds. The telegraph reports that "the statement that the Empress carried off the crown diamonds is refuted by the French government organs." "What these crown diamonds are is told in the "Monthly Gossip" of LippincoWs Magazine for last September. The writer gave an account of a gala night at the Grand Opera, August 18, 1864: "The Imperial party arrived, and the 'diamonds of the duchess paled befoie the splendor of the crown jewels like stars at sunrise. The Empress looked one blaze of light. She had driven in from Compeighe in a carriage open at the sides, with a lamp suspended from the top, that the populace might feast their eyes on her magnificence. Upon her head there arched in graceful curves an antique diadem, at whose summit the peerless 'Regent'. diamond flashed like a sun. Her corsage of lustreless scarlet silk was edged 'with a row of large diamonds set in black enamel, from each of which hung two gems of smaller size. What a pity that the sultanas of Harous al .Rasscid could not have seen her then!
The diamonds of the Princess Metternich and the Duchess de Moray, are
of far finer stones. The ear-rings were great drops of solidified light, and the bracelets were single rows of immense diamonds. Think of that and weep, O ye uncrowned empresses pf our American hearts and purses."
Departed Soul.
Heavens what a moment that must be when the last flutter expires on our lips! What a change! Tell me, ye who are deepest read in nature and in God, to what new world are V'e borne? Whither has that spark—that unseen, incomprehensible intelligence—fled? Look upon that cold, livid, ghastly corpse that lies before you. That was a shell, a gross, earthly covering, which held the immortal essence that has now left—left to range, perhaps, through illimitable space—to receive new capacities and delight, new powers of conceptions, new glories of beautitude. Ten thousand fancies rush upon the mind as it contemplates the awful moment between life and death. It is a momgnt pregnant with imagination, hopes and fears it is the consummation that clears up all mystery, solves all doubts—which removes all contradictions, and destroys error. Great God!
What a flood of rapture may at once burst upon the departed soul! The tinif clouded brightness of the celestial region —the solemn secrets of nature may be divulged, the immediate unity of the past, forms of imperishable beauty may then suddenly disclose themsehgw, burst-

DRILL!
(Kulin. the celebrated Drill Inventor's last and best.)
A Force Feed Drill, Operated by Spur Gearing.
NO LOOSE COG WHEELS ABOUT IT!
Impossible to Choke it—The Feed Changed in One Second—Will Sow Any Kind of Grain or Seed. Whether Clean or Foul!
The grain is distributed by means of small double spiral feed wheels working in cups under the hopper these wheels carry the grain upwards to a discharge opening in the cup and orce it out, and with it fwee out straws and other obstructions. It is utterly impossible to choke it, and as evidence of this fact the wheat we have in our sample machine is half chaff, and by turning the wheel it is carried through as well as clean wheat.
Itwill sow any kind of grain, and in any quantity desired. In other force feed drills to change the feed you remove one cog wheel and put in another and the cog wheels are loose and liable to be lost. In the
FARMERS' FRIEMB DRILL
the wheels are all fastened to the drill, and the feed is changed by by simply moving a small lever it is done in one second.
