THE Democracy of Clark and Edgar counties (Ills.) joined in a basket meet ing in Bircklioleer's Grove, Douglas township, Clark couuty, to-day, and had a very good time, we are toid.

PIGEONS are reported to be quite plentiful in the woods about Marshall, and sporting men are having a rich harvest. Here is a fine chance for our "sbootists,-' who can run over to Marshal, and have a pleasant time.

THEman (of the Journal),who proposes to "live and die" here, was out on the treet for a short time yesterday, or until the sun began to shine a little wa*m, and then a friend said, "My dear, wilt thou?"—and he wilted.

QUITE a number of*Odd Fellows left this city this morning for the purpose of instituting a lodge of Odd Fellows at Clinton. The people of that place should congratulate themselves on the establishment of a lodge at that placg.

BOYS are in the habit of stealing coal from the cars on the railtoad. A .warrant for the awest of a lot of thieves, was issued this morning. It would be a good thing if a few more of these young rascals were sent to the house of correction. .UlV

THE Mayor had a solitary case this morning, which was for associating with lewd women. The fellow was mulcted in the sum of $8.00, which may be considered cheap enough for. the fun the fellow had in the trial.

THIEF.—Last night about 9 o'clock, a negro was found by the police, with a wheel-barrow, in which was a lot of 5roo, evidently that he had stolen. The police

officers took the fellow in cha.'ge, and to day he was arraigned before the Mayor. «j .| It is probable the negro will go up. j,

vwThe alarm of fire yesterday evening was occasioned by,the burning ofasimall house on Water street, in the rear of

Thompson & Key 's hub and spoke factory. It was occupied by some negro xf-m1 women, belonged to Wni. Joab, aid was entirely destroyed. The loss was not 'considerable.

SATURDAY NIGHT.—In latest style of commencing..an artich&. wfc rD^ght say, *"and now comes Sa'tuf(Taysniglit''but tl^jjit. is a "cant", phrase. We would toMt^ the subject diffefehtly. To the thousand of laborers ho from Monday jmorning po Saturday/nighty worfi^ ^okK\ |^DRK, the thotight is a pleasing ancl yet sad one. With it is coupled a, day of rest. Rest from toil, rest with the ones they love most, reftf, aiid? devotion to God it may be, but rest from the toils, if ndt the cares of life. Not always from the cares of life, for many who struggle a'.ong in the toilsome path of this dreary life, working, toiling, sweating, that the. dear-ones at home may be cared for,,cannot at all times dismiss the cares that hang like a heavy weight on them. Hundreds, aye, thousands of mechanics and laborers go home, to rest to-night, but still there is a weight of care about them. Reader, did you ever 6iiink that the mechanic and laborer, who appeared so cheerful-of a Saturday evening as he was going home with his hard-earned wages in his pocket, was thinking, ''What will become of my little ones if the tender cord of life is snapped Perhaps not, but such thoughts _are, i^ the minds of millions of pedple this Saturday night, ps they move on towards their humble homes. To all such, this night has a peculiar meaning, and is a time peculiarly inapressive'.1 By Saturday nights they count the flight of time, and eagerly ask, "How many mor^ -.:Saturday nights will pass, and we be allowed to to remain with the loved ones at home?" It is these laborers, these sons of toil, who make this "world move," and make a note of Saturday night. After a while, to all the hardy sons of toil, will come a last Saturday night, and it is that last Saturday night they soi often .think of, and which so often makes trfem sadsad, because of parting with the dear ones at home. Think! This is Saturday

SCIENCE OF ADVERTISING.—It is well known to all, that fortunes have been made, and are being made every day, by judicious advertisings It is also well understood that judicious and extensive advertising is essential to success in all kinds of business, with perhaps, no exceptions.. & Even those who have been largest engaged, and whose business is most generally knowu to the public, acknowledge this to be the cas-1 by increasing instead of diminishing the amount of their advertising. The New .York Journal of Commerce, in speaking of one of one of the oldest and most successful banking institutions in that city in attributing its continued prosperity to this cause, says: "Any one would suppose that such a bank, so long established atid so widely known, might sell its bills and drafts, and obtain collections enough to satisfy any reasonable ambition, without a dollar of outlay for advertising, and so it might be said of Messrs. Brown Bros. & Co., Duncan, Sherman & Co., and other leading bankers, whose advertisements appear all the year in our columns. Messrs. A. T. Stewart & Co., who arc more extensively known than any other house o.i the continent, pay us more money for advertising their business than rfny Of their would-be rivals. If a house is not well known it should become so by liberal advertising^ and the better it becomes known and-the larger its business, and the more independent it would"seem to be, the better still does it pay to advertise it. Advertising is'not onlya' means of success, but it is at once the evidence of it, and a guaranty of its continuance. Many noble houses date the dec'edance of their trade from the suspension of advertisio|*

The Baltimore' Sufi adds "If this is true of such extensive and well-estab-iished. houses as those- —how much more forcibly does it apply to smaller financial, mercantile, and other business enterprises, and pai^ticulariy to those seeking to establish a trade." •f ,i ,r iW.

FASHIONS.-—The following "Fashions^ for the coming season will be read by the ladies with interest no doubt:

BONJSETS.

The bonnets of the season will be the Marie Antoinette gipsy, with the high, front rolled en revers, an odd lookiag flat crown set on iop of the head, and a quaint old-fashioned curtain of the material or of lace. Flowers and lace or bows of velvet form a face trimming directly over the forehead, or else the front islel't empty, to be tilled by the puffed hair of the wearer. Those gipsies are close imitations of those worn by the dames of the court of Louis XVT., the puflted hair imitating a favorite caprice of Mai.-ie Antoinette. Bonnets are made of royal velvet, and of felt. The trimmings for velvet are scarfs of gros grain of lighter shades, tinted feathers, flowers and lace. The darker shades of velvet are entwined around the crowns of felt bonnets. Feathers are also used on felt, but no lace or flowers. All bonnets are provided with strings tying under the chin, made of gros grain ribbon or velvet, from two to fou.* inches wide. Lightfeath--y fringes edge the oblique ends of streamers of soft silky fabrics tied about the crown and lelt hanging behind. For dress bonnets will be worn altogether, and round hats for ordinary occasions. Scarcely a vestige of satin is to be seen. Black velvet bonnets will also be much trimmed with pipings of white gros grain, rich whiie laces and wlr.te plumes. Scarfs of salmon color, tea-rose and other buff tints are fastened on black velvet bonnets by largo jet brooches. Aqua green and bottle green velvet bonnets have trimmings of lighter shades. Gipsies,of scarabee cut velvet have royal Scarfs of the same color. Among the few If^hter bonnets shown by milliners, blue and lilac in three shades.

The new scarabee colpr finds favor with our most fashionable milliners, who Will reproduce it to wear with cashmere costumes of the same color and also with black suits.

GAUZE.'

A new material called F-.au-Frau gauze, has been introduced for scarf trimming aud for veils. It is thin, clear grenadine of solid color., with the threads snaded to give the effect of tho cinkle, of crape, thoagh the surface remains flat. It is en^ twined like a scarf around royaie and velvet bonnets and hangs in a square haiicfkerchief or streamerrsn the left side. This si-reamer may, as occasion requires, be nsed as a veil. When black gauze*is used it has an applied border of Spanish blonde. tr'nlht

IMPUDENT.—Once upon a time Chief of Police Crowe arrested a fellow in this city for breaking open a safe and stealing albdut $300 in the vicinity of Catlin, Ills. The fellow was turned over to parties in Illinois. Mr. Crowe, o:i the 21st, received the following laconic dispatch 5 "CATJjtn,- lLLs.,jSeptember 21v I

This^"country is being crossed with numerous Railroads from every direction to Sioux Citv, Iowa. Six Railroads will be made to this city within.one year. One is already in operation connecting us. vith Chicago and the U. P. Kuilroad and two more will be completed before spring, connecting us with Dubuque and Mc. Gregor, direct. Three more will be completed witnin a year, connecting us direct with St Paul, Minn., Yankton, Dakota, and Columbus Nebraska, 011 the U. P. Railroad. The Missour River gives us the Mountain Trade. Ti us it wil be seen that no section of country offers such unprecedented advantages for. business, speculation and making a fortune,.for the country is being populated, aijd towns and cities are bein& built, and fortunes made almost beyond belief. Every man who takes a homestead now will have a railroad market at his own door, And any enterprising young inan with a small capital* can establish himself in a-permaiient paying business, if he selects the right location and right branch of tiade. Eighteen years residence in the western country, and a large portion tlie time employed as a Mercantile Agent in thi country, has ihade me familiar with all tlia branches of business and the best locations in this Country. For one dollar remitted to me I will give truthful and definite answers to all questions on this subject desired by such persons. Tell them the best place to locate, and what business is overcrowded and what branch is neglected. Address, ,f DANIEL SCOTT,
