Translated from a French Paper.

The Fate of Prussian Spy in a Stras bourg Inn. In an inn at Strasbourg, some Algerines, officers, sub-officers, and French soldiers, were engaged in eating a comfortable dinner, the first for eight days.

A stranger entered and asked perm is sion to join them at the table. "Gentlemen," said he, "although I do not have the honor of being known to you, I am not a stranger to the grand family of the army. Capt. Brunet, of the Twenty-first line, is my best friend—almost my brother."

On account of Capt. Brunet, although no one present knew him the stranger was allowed to take a seat. He had al ready eaten the cotelette and the ragout, and had commenced to chat with his •companions, when his evil destiny brought into the room an officer of the Twenty-first. "Ah!" said one to the stranger, "here is some one who will give you news of your friend." "Lieutenant, we present to you an intimate friend of Capt. Brunet." "What Brunet?" "Of the Twenty-first." "We have never had any Capt. Brunet during the ten years I have been in it."

The intruder was visibly embarrassed. He stammered, and, in his confusion, betrayed a foreign accent.

Some Turcos took the lieutenant aside, and said: "Are you sure Capt. Brunet is unknown in the Twenty-first?" "I give you my word of honor

They were going to make short work of the spy, but his next neighbor, an officer of the tirailleurs, arrested them with a gesture, and said "This gentleman is under my care. Dine at your ease, sir. Permit me to pass the cheese. Take some of these mirabelles."

The dinner was ended in silence. They went out. The officer took the arm of the spy, passed into the street, drew his revolver and gravely, and without a word of remark, blewouthis brains.

Keeping Grapes Under Ground. Many years ago, while in the nnrsery business, a customer wanted some vines of me, and white they were being dug up he asked me if I had kept my grapes over winter. This was in March. Of course he got a negative reply. Well, says he, when I come next week for trees I will bring you some along. The thing seemed but a joke to me at the time, but of course 11 hanked him for the kind 1fer. True to his promise, when he came a week or ten days thereafter he brought me some. Not a few berries, as might have expected, but at least five pounds. They were Isabellas and Catawbas, perfectly plump, sweet and fresh, although most of the berries had dropped from their stems. With the exception of a very slight earthly taste, they were certainly excellent.

The question, of course, was asked, how do you keep them thus? The reply was, that in the fall, as late as the cold will admit, they were gathered in a clear day when perfectly dry a box about eight inches deep was taken a layer of green leaves was taken from the vines and laid on the bottom on these a layer of grapes, then a layer of leaves again, until the box was full, finishing with a layer of leaves. Put the lid on tight and bury deep enough to escape the frosts of winter. Of course it must be where water cannot settle into the box.

The steins of these grapes were quite fresh when given to me. The man told me hip father-in-law had kept thus for years. Why I never tried it is now a mystery to me, but if spared until fall will do so, I think.—Correspondent of Orape Culturist.

Nothing Like Grammar.

Nothing like grammar! Better go without a cow than go without that. There are numberless professors who go "tramp, tramp, tramp, my boys!" around the country, peddling a weak article, by which they guarantee to set a man thoroughly np in the English language in twenty days. An instance in point comes from Greenville, Ala., where a professor had labored with the youth of that people^ and taught them to dote on grammar according tb Morris' system. During one of the lectures the sentence "Mary milks the cow," was given out to be parsed. Each one of the words had been parsed save one, which fell to Bob a sixteen-year-old, near the foot of the class, who commenced thus: "Cow is a noun, feminine gender, singular number, third person, and stands for Mary.11 "Stands for Mary?" said the excited professor, "how do you make thatout? "Because," answered the noble pupil, "if the cow didn't stand for Mary, how could Mary milk her?"—Harper's for •October.

Arkansas Grammar.

An Arkansas applicant for a teacher's certificate thus conjugates the verb "to do."

Imperfect—I have done it, thou dullest it, he done it. Plnral—Weunsdonc it, youns done it, theyuns done it.

Perfect—I gone done it, you gone done it, he gone done it. Plural—Weuns gone done it, youns gone done it, theyuns gone done it.

Future—I guine done it, you guine done it, theyuns guine done it. Plural—Weuns guine done it, youns guine done it, theyuns guine done it.

Future perfect—I done guine done it, you done guine done it, he done guine done it.

Plural—Weuns done guine done it, youns done guine done it, theyuns done guine done it.

S^Wonder if it's True. I A distinguished German Professor recently announced that if a drop of human blood was placed under a micro-

scope

capable of magnifying it twenty millions of times, it would show all kiuds of animals that ever existed, or now exist upon the earth. In the blood of a healthy person the animals are quiet, in that of a sick person they fight. From this he draws the conclusion that man has within him all the elements from which the universe was created. He further says that it a ^iead cat was Hung in a pond of water and left to decompose,'the drops of water should show, when: under the microscope, all the animals belonging to the cat species.

A Force Feed Drill, Operated by Spur Gearing.

NO LOOSE COG WHEELS ABOUT IT!

Impossible to Choke it—The Feed Changed in One Second—Will Sow Any Kind of Grain or Seed, Whether Clean or Foul!

The grain is distributed by means of small double spiral feed wheels working in cups under the hopper these wheels carry the grain upwards to a discharge opening in the cup and orce it out, and with It force out straws anaother obstructions. It is utterly impossible to choke it, and as evidence of this fact the wheat we have in our sample machine is half chaff, and by turning the wheel it is carried through as well as clean wheat.

Itwill sow any kind of grain, and in any quantity desired. In other force feed drills to change the feed you remove one cog wheel and put in another and the cog wheels are loose and liable to be lost. In the

FARMERS'FRIEND DRILL

the wheels are all fastened to the drill, and the feed is changed by bysimpty moving a small lever —it is done in one second.
