issued to our regular subscribers, at the

usual time on Saturdays, as on other

days

City and Neighborhood.

WHO stolo Edmonds' pocket book SCUDDEK has the largest strawberries, and the coldest ice cream in the city.

BUSY.—Our streets were thronged with people yesterday, and in looking around the city we found the merchants all looking pleasant, a sure sign that trado was lively.

YOUNO lady physicians are multiplying rapidly, throughout the country, and consequently, the young men are decidedly more sickly than they used to be.

REMEMBER

are remarkably scarce. Won't

somebody's daughter run away with some one, and some one's old man get mad and shoot at some one, and some one light out, and have some one arrested, or some one do something to some one so somebody can make a note of it. Say

NOT.—That

festive boy with the

magenta locks, who runs the city part of the Sentinel, says he thinks St. Louis is too far from Carbon to ever amount to much. You are right, too. Geology will •never help that city, or map makers get west of New York.

DID Edmonds get into bad company at St. Louis? Was lie seen with Winters of tho Sentinel

CANDIDATES are fearfully plenty to-day. Wo notice all the delegates have on their old coats. They aj-e sharp, they have had enough "button holes" torn out of their good clothes.

LYDJA THOMPSON now proposes to play awhile in Brooklyn, then to marry that lucky dog, Henderson, and, after a little rest, go to California for nuggets, and for fame.

WISCONSIN boy tried to ride on a farm roller a few days ago, but instead, the roller rode on him. He was spread out so they had to bury him in a sugar pan.

LARGE.—Hats of large size will be in good demand this evening upon the return of the excursion train. It is wonderful how fliiids will increase tho size of a man's head. We have been to St. Louis, and know.

CHEAP.— ee notice of low rates to Cincinnati, in another column. The Indiana Central never do things by halves, and their route is a pleasant oue, and parties who want to take a run down and hear some fine music and get some of tho best lagor in tho world can not do better than to go tho Central.

PROGRESSING.—The new block opposite tho Torre Haute House is being pushed forward as rapidly as men and money can do it. It is to be three stories high, 50 SO feet, and one room oil the ground floor will be occnp ed bj' Dr. Baur as a drug store, and the other by Jas. B. Lyne as a wholesale liquor house. Who puts up the next block

AMUSEMENT.—The only places open last night wer:e the Comique and Troy's Auction. The crowds were about equal, but Troy can hold his crowd best, "cause why" he is not so near a saloon, and he does not give his audience time between acts to leave. Go ami see Troy, and hear him blow. ,,

STRANGERS.—Our city is full of straugers and many of them looking for locations. Come on gentlemen, if you want to locate in the west, this is the exact spot, and if you want to erect manufactories of any kind, our citizens will not ask you four prices for tho ground to locate upon, but will give it £o you

WHO was the man that went ashore from the "Belle" hafcless, and what was he doing with his head oat over the guard? He ought to cast up his accounts before he leaves home next time. Too much ice water" and stuff.

Is order to amuse the children, a lady was engaged in reading from the Bible the story of David and Goliah, and coming to the passage in which Goliah so boastingly and defiantly dared the young stripling, a little chap, almost in the first trowsers, said: "Sister, skip that—skip that he's blowing. I want to know which licked."

You know that almost every man who has become wealthy in business, can trace his success to advertising. If this holds good in every case, the New York Store ought to become millioniares. Look at their 4 column advertisement in another part of the paper, and yet, in this space they cannot tell half. Call and see thoir immense stock of goods, and hear their prices. Liberal dealing and one price to all, is their motto.

morrow at the Court House. Warm work is expected. The commands are being mustered and inspected to-day, preparatory to the fight.

GOODS.—Although the excitement has partially died out, yet our merchants are doing a thriving trade. We took a look in at Tueil, Itipley & Deming's this morning, and, although it was quite early, we found the house full of customers, and all going away with a smiling countenance, as much as to say, "this is fun for us, but how can they sell goods so cheap Secret—they advertise.

The

SERENADE.—The Terre Haute Musical Club, composed of several of our first class young men, and all fine musicians, went out last night in a nice turn-out, serenading some of the fair ones. We heard them at a distance, and must say, that thoir music was beautiful. Our room fronts on the back yard—but no dog3 around.

along in the movement. Our prairie is large, giving ample room for all, and you will Arid Ours alive town, inhabited by intelligent, wide awake folks.

FisttC.-r-By Reference to our advertising columns, it will be seen that Collyer Aaron and Holliwood, with their Troupe, will remain in town and give one more entertainment at the Comique to-night. The boys say they give a good performance, and do some first class sparring. We can dd, that since they have been in our city, their deportment has been very gentlemanly, and no person would, for a moment, suspect that they were the champions of many hard fought battles within the "square" 24 foot ring.

NOTICE.—Arrangements have

been made with the Terre Hauto and Indianapolis Railroad to carry passengers at half-fare from Terre Haute and west to Indianapolis and return, to connect at Indianapolis with the train from there to Cincinnati via tho Central and Richmond Line, on the 15th of June. Tickets will be good to return on all regular trains from Cincinnati to Terre llaute to the21st, inclusive. Fare from Indianapolis to Cincinnati and return §2,25. This will enable all who desire to attend the great Stengerfest at Cincinnati, beginning Jnne 15th, and the Trotting Races at Cincinnati an opportunity to do so at tho low fare of five dollars, or less, from Terre Haute to Cincinnati and return, full fare being $1520. Business men and others will do well to avail themselves of this opportunity, as it is tho lowest faro ever made from Terre Haute or Indianapolis to Cincinnati and return. *.,

Through tickets are on sale at the ticket office of the T. H. fc I. R.R. at Terre Haute. W. M. JONES. 9d5

were not so fortunate as to

make the trip with the Good Templars to Marshall yesterday, but from a gentleman who was of the partj', we learn that it was a perfect success. They were joined by the Marshall Lodge, and had a gay time generally. A shower or two during the day, only made it cool and pleasant. We saw them on their return in the evening, and they seemed to feel glad they went.

CITY.—Wanted—some

man possessed of a moderate degree of industry and enterprise, to engage in the manufacture at Terre Haute of common chairs. To the right kind of a man, possessed of §1,500, or ?2,000, a wide field for usefulness and money-making, is open, and only awaits his coming to at once enter into a business, as there is no establishment of the kind in the city.

Wanted—some person to commence the manufacture of common road wagons. The field to the right kind of a man, is a wide and interesting one. The demand is great and the supply limited. Little or no competition in the business.

BE HAPPY.—It is the easiest thing in the world to be happy, if men and women would only think so. Happiness is only another name for love for where love exists in a household there happiness must also exist, even though it has poverty for a close companion. Where love exists not, even though it be a place, happiness can never come. He was a cold and selfish being who originated tho saying that "when Poverty comes in at the door Love flies out at the window and his assertion proves conclusively that he had no knowledge of love for, unquestionably, the reverse of the maxim quoted is nearer the truth. When poverty comes in at the door, love, true love, is more than ever inclined to tarry and do battle with the enemy. Let those who imagine themselves miserable, before they find fault with their surroundings search their own hearts for tho true cause. A few kind words or a little forbearance, will often open the way to a liood of sunshine in a house darkened by the clouds of discord and unamiability.

WESTERN LANDS.

Homestead and Pre-emption. Istatement,plainlyaprinted

HAVE compiled full, concise and complete for the information of persons, intending to take up a Homestead or Pre-Emption in this poetry of the West, embracing Iowa, Dakota, and Nebraska and other sections. It explains how to proceed to-secure 160 acres of Rich Farming Land for Nothing, six months before yo'u leave your home, in the most healthful climate. In short it contains just such instructions as are needed by those intending to make a Home and Fortune in the Free Lands of the West. I .will send one ot these printed Guides to any person for 25 cents. The information alone, which, it gives is worth $5 to anybody. Men who came here two and three years ago, and took a farm, are to-day independent.

To YOUNG MEN

This country is being crossed with numerous Railroads from every direction to Sioux City, Iowa. Six Railroads tfill be made to this city within one year. One is already In operation connecting us with Chicago and the U. P. Railroad and two more will be completed before spring, connecting us with Dubuque and McGregor, direct. Three more will be completed within a year, connecting us direct with St. Paul, Minn., Yankton, Dakota, and Columbus, Nebraska, on the U. P. Railroad. The Missouri River gives us the Mountain Trade. Thus it will be seen that no section of country oilers such unprecedented advantages for business, speculation and making a fortune, for the country is being populated, and towns and cities are being built, and fortunes made almost beyond belief. Every man who takes a homestead now will have a railroad market at his own door, And any enterprising young man with a small capi tal can establish himself in a permanent payfui business, if he selects the right location an right branch of trade. Eighteen years residence in the western country, and a large portion oi the time employed as a Mercantile Agent in this country, has made me familiar with all the branches of business and the best locations in this country. For one dollar remitted to me I will give truthful and definite answers to all questions'on this subject desired by such persons. Tell them the best place to locate, and what business is overcrowded and what branch is neglected. Address,
