Washington City, June 5.—The senate yesterday agreed to a resolution for an investigation of tlie charges of nepotism, j etc., made by newspapers against the fish commission. The chair announced as a committee on national university Edmunds, Sherman, Ingalls, Illair, Dolph, Harris, Hutler, Gibson, and Harbour. The fortification bill whs amended by striking out the appropriation for the Watervleit arsenal, New York, and substituting an appropriation of $285,000 for tioriug and turning lathes, etc , at that srsenal. Some other amendments were agreed to and the bill was passed. In reply to Stewart’s resolu tion alleging diversion of fun ds appro printed for irrigation purposes, tlie interior ofllce sent in a communication saying that there was no such diversion. A resolution authorizing the president to form alliances witli foreign countries for suppression of the liquor traffic was introduced by Frye and referred. The senate then adjourned. The house agreed to the conference report on the army bill. Disagreement on tlie pension hill was reported and vMother conference ordered. The difference is between dependent and service pensions. The Alabama contested election case of McDuffie vs. Turpin was then taken up and McDuffie, the Bepublican, seated. He then took the oath. The house then ad-
journed.
Washington City, June 6.—Several hill, were reported favorably to tlie senate yesterday, one being an appropriation of $80,000 tor a monument in thiscity to John Ericsson. Hills granting pensions of #50 per month to the widows of ^'ommander Winslow, of the Kearsage, and Hear Admiral Edward Donaldson were passed. The silver bill discussion took up most of the day, Hiscoek and Sherman opposing the senate bill. Sherman declared for a single standard and that gold, and the abandonment of silver except for subsid-
iary coin.
In the house tlie railway committee reported a hill to settle the Central and Union Pacific railway debts. Mason introduced a bill to amend the interstate commerce law so its to allow railways to make special rates for theatrical companies, At McKinley's motion the house took up the silver bill with the provision that it shall he voted upon Saturday. The Democrats made a vigorous demand for more time for amendment, hut failed to get it. Anderson of Kansas, Hartine, Connell, Dellaven, Feat herst one, Eunston, Kelly, Morrow, Herman, and Townsend of Colorado voted with tlie Democrats. Conger of Iowa moved the substitution of the bill agreed upon at Wednesday night's caucus, and after a few amendments hud lieen offered the debate began, but without action the house adjourned. Washington City, June 7.—Hills were introduced in tlie senate yesterday: To compel railways to build elevators and storehouses for the storage of grain for inter state shipment; u per diem and dependent pension bill, excluding from the per diem portion persons whose income is more than $1,200 per year. A new conference was ordered on Can dependent pension bill, and then the silver bill was debated, and laid aside without action. Some routine business having been tiansacted an executive session was held, and the senate adjourned. A bill wns introduced in tlie house prohibiting the exportation of intoxicants to Africa and the Pacific islands. Tho silver debate was resumed, continued until 5 p. m., « recess to 8 taken, and the debate again continued until 11 p. m., when the house adjourned. Washington City, June !),—The senate put in u good deal of time Saturday passing bills, many of them of no general interest. Among them were the following: Appropriating #90,000 for public printing deficiency; to provide for the compulsory education of Indian children; to prevent desertions from the army by withholding part of the soldiers’ monthly pay, and 120 private pension bills.
