WHAR’ THE HAND O’ GOD IS SEEN.

Do 1 like tin; city? Strangor, 'tisn't likely that I would; 'Tisn't likely that a ranger from the border ever could Git accustomed to the flurry an’ the loud, onearthly noise— Everybody in a hurry, men and wimmin, yals an boys. All a-rushin like the uatlon 'mid the rumble an’ the jar, Jes' as if their souls* salvation hnftg ufKjn their gittin thar’.

EOK Till: JOHNSTOWN SUFFICKKKH.

Like it? No. I love to wander 'Mid the vales and mountains green, In the border land out yonder, Whar’ the hand o’ God is seen.

Nothin’ yar but bricks and mortar, towerin' overhead so high. That you never see a quarter o' the overhangin’ sky. Not a tree or grassy modder, not a runnin' brook in sight, Nothin’ but the Imildiu' shadder makin' gloom o' heaven's light. E’en the birds ar' nil imported from away acrost the sea— Faces meet me all distorted with the hand o’ misery.

Like it? No. I love to wander 'Mid the vales an’ mountains green, In the border land out yonder, Whar’ the hand o’ God is seen.

Roarin’ railroad trains above you, streets by workmen all defaced, Everybody tryin’ to shove you in the gutter in their haste. Cars and carts an’ wagons rumblin’ through the streets with deafenin' roar, Drivers yellin', swearin', grumblin', jes’ like imps from Sheol's shore; Factories j'nin’ in the chorus, helpin’ of the din to swell; Auctioneers in tones sonorous lyin' ‘bout the goods they sell.

Like it? No. I love to wander 'Mid the vales and mountains green, In the border land out yonder, Whar' the hand o’ God is seen.

Yes, I love the western border; pine trees wavin’ in the air, Rocks piled up in rough disorder; birds a siugin' everywhere; Deer a-playin’in their gladness; elk a feedeu in the glen; Not a trace o’ pain or sadness campin' on the trail o’ men. Brooks o'crystal clearness flowin'o'er the rocks an’ lovely flowers In their tinted beauty grow in’ in the mountain dells an’ bowers.

’Tis thought the rainy season is over.

The County Commissioners have adjourned.

Summer bids fair to strike ns now and make up for lost time.

A Meeting for the Relief of the Afflicted Valley. Pursuant to call <juite a crowd assembled in the court bouse Friday evening. The object of the meeting was to raise funds for the relief of the sufferers of the Johnstown, Pa., flood. The meeting was called to order by Dr. Bainum and Mayor Cowgill was made chairman. A committee was appointed with Jerome Allen, chairman, to solicit money and clothing. Those of the committee were, chairman, Jerome Allen, Itev. C. W. Bainum. Daniel Langdon, ABrock way, John Cawley. J. McD. Hays, W. F, Starr, H. H. Mathias, Lafe Darnall, Joe P. Allen, Sheriff Vestal, Bev. M. M. Parkhurst, I. Ver million, John Kiley, Chas. A. Keifer A. Birch and Geo. E. Blake. Pastors of city were instructed to solicit all such donations on Sunday. The committee went to work with a will and on yesterday their fund had reached $400 and another hundred will probably be secured. Auditor Randall, I. Vermillion and Sheriff Vestal were appointed a committee to ask a donation from the county commissioners. Mayor Cowgill was named as a like committee to see the city council, and on Tuesday evening that body donoted $200 in cash. The “King’s Sous’’ enh-rtaimnent in the opera house Saturday night cleared $35. Several large boxes of clothing were shipped by the committee Tuesday. Greencastle has done nobly in the work of relief. Tlie county commissioners adjourued yesterday without making a donation. They recognized the worthiness of the canse, they said, but did not wish to establish such a precedent.

Terre Haute.

The little city of Terre Haute was “wide open” ou the occasion of her oil excursion last Thursday. Large crowds of visitors took advantage of the low rates offered by the various railroads to visit the city and all the sights of au oil center. All were well treated, and carried away highly favorable impressions of the liberality and progressive public spirit of Terre Hauteutots. Headquarters for visitors were established in a large store room on Main street where a wide awake reception committee of prominent citizens met and entertained all callers. Visitors were requested to register and were then driven over the city at, will in cabs and carriages. A display of theDiall oil gusher was made during the day for their benefit, and thousands of people viewed the works. Small sam pie bottles of the oil were given to all who would carry them away. The city can be said to be a thor onghly oil soaked center The pungent odor of the fiowing iluid is everywhere prevalent, and can be detected the moment one crosses the borders. A score of new derricks are going up, and drills are going down at many new wells. If even a portion of the companies are successful in their search Terre Haute is sure

of a boom.

Visiting members of the editorial profession were handsomely enter' tamed at the office of the Express* George M. Allen and his able corps of assistants making things decidedly pleasant. A substantial and highly enjoyable noon-day feast was spread in the oflice rooms to which all the craft were invited, and which gave all those participating an exalted opinion of the generosity and prosperity of oil-town publishers in general and of Mr. Allen in particular. The races, which were a paid of the city’s attractions, were successful and well attended ou Thursday although rain interfered on the preceeding and following days.

MANY MUSICAL SOUNDS

Of Much ImiMM-tance Which Arc Agitating tlm MimH of the Public. The School of Music grows livelier as Commencement approaches. Rehearsals and recitals are occurring nightly and will so continue until after the Festival. Monday evening the American composers’ recital occurred in Music hall and was attended by a large audience of representa tive citizecs. The program was made upby American compositions wholly, which were rendered by students and teachers. Frof. Howe’s own composition, for voice, pianoforte ( violin and ’cello, was one of the most, pleasing selections. The entire program was well given. As su many persons have requested, the Antique Concert will be repeated. The program has been rearranged, the objectionable number expunged, and other changes have been made. Miss Hayes, Miss Smith unc Miss Perkins will recite pleasing selections in their inimitable manner. The orchestra will he augmented and play a beautiful new selection and three favorites. Some of the choruses and hymn tunes will be struck out to make the concert come within the matinee limit. The prices havp been made low so that the school children can hear some fine music and artistic readings at reasonable rates.

E O. McCormick, late General Passenger Agent of the Monon, has taken a similar position with the C. H. & D. He is succeeded by Mr. Barker.

Big Walnut creek rose, turned over and got out of her bed last Saturday. The bottom land along the creek was inundated iu many places and some corn suffered. A large crowd watch ed the rise and fall of the waters Saturday and Sunday.

Captain Miles has called ouratten tion to au error in an account given in this paper of the Gentry trial in March, which reflects unjustly ami personally upon the professional honor of John Allee, Esq., of Greencastle. The account says Mr. Allee procured an affidavit from Boswell at the penitentiary ou the promise of having his term in prison shortened, and that Mr. Allee “did not deny the fact.’’ The account neglected to state that Hugo Alben, a prison guard, was present during Mr. Alice's conference with Boswell, and that Alben testified in the trial that no such ofler was made or implied by Mr. Allee. We do not wish to misrepresent Mr. Allee, and gladly make the correction. Blake, secretary, H. S. R?nick, treasurer, and William Burk and Charles Lueteke, additional directors. Tie company are meeting with much encouragement and are making a thorough canvass and are con-

'The contemptible note iu the Adz, in reference to the interesting “Antique Concerto” only shows the meanness and ignorance of the writer. First his unjustness is shown iu placing the weaker selections of the concert with the best of the Shakespeare. Why not place Handel, Beethoven and Weber with Shakespeare? Again, although he makes an assertion regarding operatic music, there was not an operatic song on the program. Here he shows his ignorance. An editor should be pitied who allows such unfair comparisons to be placed iu the columns of a college paper. [Correspondent. Upon thereat value and method of newspaper advertising an exchange sensibly says: “Some try advertising as the Indian Iried feathers. He took one feather, laid it on a board, and slept on it all night. In the morning he remarked: White man say feathers heap soft; white mund— fool” Some business men investa quarter or fifty cents in advertising, and then because they do not at once realize great increase of business they declare that advertising does not pay, A man should not expect returns so disproportionate to his envestmeot. Even little advertising is doubtless worth all it cc^ts, but a twenty-five cent local cannot he expected to revolutionize business and turn trade out of its accustomed channel.
