In the 2:2-< trotting race at New Ross, Thursday there were nine starters, a number of them being campaigners and favoritea with the "sharks.” "Willis Wood,” tho inbred Rescue colt owned by Capt. J. M. Owens, of this city, showed to the front however, in a manner that fully proves that * blood will tell.” Right here we might remark that there are several other rescue coLs in this neighborhood that are developing wonderful qualities as goers. The Western Sportsman gives the follow ing ac
count of the New Ross race:
The first race called was the 2:28 trot in which the starters were John Keeney’s blk ra Nellie K., M . F. Mcllaffie’s b g Snucks, J. M. Owens’ WilHs Wood, C. Y. bantzer’s ch in Highland Mary, Wm. Wishard’s ch m Polly Wishard.J. C. Htuard'a Nellie 8, E. Allgaire’s h g Frank Myers, John Bebout’s b ■: Mamie K., and W. Davis’ hs Rosewood. This was tho hottest contest ever had on tho New Ross track. For a while it seemed everybody’s race, but toward the finish it had settled down to a two handed fight between Willis Wood and Highland Mary. In the first beat Mary was Nth and and Willis Wood 4th, Nellie S. winning in 2.34. Th# second heat was faster, and was won by Mary in 2:32. with Polly Wishard second and Wood third. In the third heat Wood went to the front and won, with Highland Mary a good second, hut the judges, on the ground that her driver halooed, set her back to eighth, which decision was universally condemned, as it was well understood that Burge did no more than try to “talk
his mare hack.” The fourth

They are fashionable now as they always have been, and the good old custom of remembering the bride by the bestowal of presents is also in vogue in the fashionable world. The brides of the weddings hereabouts this week, have been made happy, not only in securing good husbands, but also in being bountifully remembered by their friends—the presents were varied and handsome, and with few exceptions j were purchased at Brattin's jewelry store, where can always be found a full and fashionable line of watches, clocks, jewelry, silverware, spectacles, fine cutlery etc., at tho lowest possible prices, All goods sold engraved free of charge, and guaranteed as represented.
