—Prof. Francis Child, of Harvard , College, lias issued a circular which, j although especially addressed to college students, is interesting to all educated persons. He asks help in collecting the remains of ballads, of ; which there was once a great store, | handed down by oral tradition. In 1878 he made an effort to recover in 1 Scotland such ballads, but found that j 1 the day has gone by for their transmisi sion in Scotland. Prof. Child believes that the Irish yet retain in their mem- | ory many ballads, and that these may be saved if qualified persons will in-1 l teresl themselves in the work of collecting them. This requires some 1 ; tact, as uneducated old women, who would be most likely to have treasured them, wouid easily take offense if they ] suspected that their simplicity was displayed for the entertainment of the querist, and they could not be expeotj ed to appreciate the valued of those evidences oi early culture an t he state of j society. Ballads in English, not in i Gaelic, are wanted, and even frag-
ments are valuable.
