“And so you are the originator of the

“Its early life was a stugglo, more particularly for its want of an editorial head. I made several trials, and finally Mr. Harte’s name was suggested to me. j He came at a very moment when we J were considering a change of die for the cover. The cut representing a grizzly standing alone without surroundings seemed so bare of suggestion that I had dertermined on some alteration. My partner and chief clerk made several sketches, but they failed to please me. So intent were we on this subject that Mr. Harte was neglected after recognii tion. Then, as a matter of easy introi duction to the business ;he and I were to 1 discuss, 1 called attention to our want | never imagining he could help us out. i What was my surprise when, on taking 1 a pencil, he simply drew two lines, plac-

ing our grizzly on the Pacific railroad.

The die needed no other finish. It seemed an inspiration, and I thought if he were so apt in this particular, of what | ! might he he capable, in illuminating the |

“Front that moment he had my full | confidence. After a little talk 1 concluded an agreement with him to furnish an article a month and to gener- | ally superintend the magazine. Su|w.nitltl<m« of tli„ firm. Old wives hy the sea coast hold many enperstitions coneerning the “hollowsouudingand mysterious main.” Thus Dickens tells us that Barkis lingered in I his dying until the turn of the tide, when, the tide going out, Barkis went

lont with it.

In New England it is unlucky to kill < a pig in the wane of the moon or at the ebbing of the tide; the pork will shrink in the Isiiling. Water in the dinner-pot evaporates more rapidly over the fire! when the tide is “dead low.” It is tin-1 lucky to eat fish from the head down[ward; it drives away the fish from the

( shores.

To tell the stage of the tide without going to the bench, look in a cat’s eyes; the pupil of every intelligent cat’s eve is . • longs ted when the tide is at the flood, j Never count a catch offish until the; day’s work, or ?-port, is done. Otherwise ; the s|«irt is spoiled. Similarly the seaside farmer never counts his la'mh- until 1 the season for their dropping i- v« r. But it is not alone in rural i">minu- ' nities that men and women keep up customs and rites binned on pagan sufiersti1 lions. Among the ancient Greeks and Romans it was a common custom for the 1 bridegroom to give Ids bride, on the wedding night, a considerable sum of I money by way of purchase of her person. From this usage, no doubt, we have deI rived the custom of making wedding [ presents, under which so many people 'groan. The ancient, Haxons gave a oe- ! throthal ring, or other gift, which was •ailed a “a wed,” and from which we , nave derived a very charming word. Fifth avenue throws an old shoe after the departing bride. Is this because our sterner forefathers ordained that the bridegroom should tap his new-made wife on the head with his shoe as a token uf her submission to her lord?

Cremation.

[(jlobe-Dcmncr&t )

Ah to the cremation revival, I have to ' ask what is to beoctnc of the ashes of the dead? Shall we place them incur park*, public buildings, or shall we re- ! vive the columbarium of antiquity. The columbaria I had the pleasure of [visiting in the city of Rome, in 1877, | then but recently discovered and un- ) earthed, were immense chambers, say 20 feet square and 100 to 120 feet in ! depth. They were built of stone wall masonry from the bottom up; at the roof the masonry arched to an entire j i cover of masonry roof. It had innumj nrahle apertures about the size of a pig- : eon-hole. Over each aperture was in1 serted the epitaph of the dead whose lilies rested within the hole or aperture | in an iron urn. It seems that these urns have rested within these }«n tals and I these columbaria have been undisturbed since the time of their closure reputed

If you require the children under you to sit far back on a chair, and to hold their chins up, you will cure them of being round shouldered, and the lungs and other vital organs will have free and healthy play. Another simple plan is to have the children bend backward until they can see the ceiling. This exercise for a few minutes each .lay will work a most wonderful transformation. If a well qualified teacher could be employed to superintend the physical development of children, the nest results would be seen. Tlie first steps should be simple and economical.
