Surely the fortified places east of the ' Alleghany Mountains give no such traces; the Hock Fortresses and Pueblos of. the Western nations reveal no such system, and scarcely do even tha accounts | of the Aztecs exhibit any more strength
to the religions belief.
Religion was the great peculiarity of j the Mound Builders. There are many j : elaborate and strange systems of works | j which can be explained on no other sup- i ; position. There are traces of it brought I out more and more from the inscribed j stones and engraved shells which have,
been discovered.
At times these earthwork’s assume ge-1 1 ometrical figures, as if the builders un-j I derstood the symbolism of the circle, and I (square, and triangle, and sought to com- i i bine them in one; and again, the most |striking resemblance to the ornaments! | worn upon the |>erson is apparent, as if | they sought to place on tho nreust of nature the significant emblem or the sacred I representations which their priestly ful-
lers were accustomed to wear.
The resemblance of some of their earthworks to the sacred stones and symbols which have been discovered has impressed many a student of their relies; ami .the wonderful mystery according to which their works are attended also ihows that a religious system which we do lot understand was the motive with which thev were erected. There are es-* pecial evidences in the grand and mysterious system of symbolism which pre-
vailed among this strange people.
No people on the continent, except those who have U-en advanced far in culture, have shown so much religious symbolism. The Egyptians have their. elaiioraU! system, the Hindoos have
theirs, and the Pfndans theirs, and the ! cnees'm the Hnimal foreeK. which .isi.iiitstc, n J out ' n e drank while he could stand

Doubtless tho laboring classes of tills j day in all civilized communities arc bet- ' ter housed, fed, clad and paid than the same class at any other time in the history of tha human race, yet there never was a time of greater dissatisfaction
among workingmen.
During the magnificent reign of Louis XIV. there w;w more extreme |>overty m France than there is now in all Europe, Ireland included. The condition ■ jf the emancipated Russian serf is far better than that of the French or German peasant two centuries ago, and within the historical era there is no record of a time when 50,000,000 of the common people and poor were so comfortably sit ( unted as the 50.000,000 who now inhabit I
the United States.
But if the condition of the poor has j
improved, the private fortunes of the rieli have increased as to utterly confound all attempts at comparison with the rieli men of past ages. ‘‘As rich as j Orrosus” has stood for an adage these twenty-three centuries. Yet Unesuswas ! a king who devoted his whole energies i to the acquisition of gold, and there is j good reason to believe that we have not less than half a dozen men and women in this Stall! who are richer in gold and its equivalents than this Lydian monarch. | The richest man in Rome at the time of i Cuisar was Crassus. His fortune has been carefully estimated by several hi' i torians, but never above $S,500,0t)0 of our money. This is not much more than | ' William ll. Vanderbilt’s yearly income,] and it is more than ? 1,000,000 below the appraisement of the fortune of the late
William S. O’Brien, of this city. The Astor estate was valued ten years
ago at $40,000,000. At a moderate rate of accretion, sav five per cent., it must now amount to $60,000,000. The yearly income at the same rate is $,‘1,000,000. This a third more than the entire income
of the British
