[James Redpnth in San Francitco Chronicle ) ItubjTi 0. Ingersoll was born in tho irfstorn part of New York. Mis father moved when he was very young into Ohio, and then into Illinois—bull of them at that time regions almost wholly uninhabited. Robert's early years were Kissed face to fare witli the unsubdued forests and prairies, and this life strengthened his habit of independent thought and utterance, and gave him a physical constitution that can endure without breaking, extreme! and continuous toil
when he chooses to test it.
He soon left homo—when he was a mere boy—and wandered about the West 1 i good deal, working at different places, I uni finally he got an education as a lawj vrr. He soon became famous in his disi trict—he lived in Peoria, Illinois—its a lawyer of unmatched eloquence and influence with juries. It is doubtful whether he has an equal as a jury lawyer in the country today. Certainly he has no j
equal in the West.
Stories are told in Illinois of his jsiwrr over juries that rival the strongest illus-
trations of the influence of eloquence in j , , , , «»>• <’t the annals of the English or Amer-, ^^"blT/^n^any'.hnt ".."bi 1 iean har. It is a very tough case that he Mimd. in Hathaway Block, prepared t<> fiirn sli I Can not carry staple and fuwey arm-cries and prnviilons of the i , ,, s- best iiuiility at lowest prices.
Ingersoll never was a believer either in his father’s faith—old school Presbyterianism—or in the inspiration of the bible. He was a free-thinker from his earliest boyhood. Before he was ten years old he had constant discussions ’ with his father, in which he argued against his fati r’s creed. His father was a Presbyterian minister. The theory I that it was his father’s sternness that I made him an infidel is not correct, al- j though the austerity of an old-style Pres-; byteriau household, especially on Sun-: lays, undoubtedly intensified his natural tinlielief in any form of faith that causes a man to seek anywhere but in his own i heart or in nature for any truth, either scientific or religious or ethical. Colonel Ingersoll’s brother used to speak of Robert's talks with his father, when both of them were little boys. The old clergyman once got a little angry at ids son’s j inborn infidelity; but when the boy said : ‘•Well, father, if you want me to lie you may make me pretend to believe like i you; but if you want me to be honest I J must talk as 1 do,” the wise father ore j ferred to have a sincere child rather than
] a hypocrite.
1 luring the late war Ingersoll raised a regiment of cavalry and commanded it. | and was assigned the Western department. He was in the battle of Shiloh I and several other engagements. • )n one i occasion he was ordered to guard a ford, with instructions to delay an advancing
