It is sometimes a vexation to find the theruiirteeters each telling a different story. The cause is probably less in the vari «ii«B of the instruments than in the way of hanging them. Nobody cares to know how cold it is at the top of any buil-di g nor at the bottom of a well. If it make* a difference whether a thermometer hangs against a wooden wall or an iroiKpo-t. nobody wants it against either. What we want to know is the cold at the height-of a man’s head above the side walk, and free from any aceidenta! changes wrought by neighboring boilers or fin s. F'or instance, on Tuesday morning las', we consulted a half doxen then mometers in as many minutes, hanging in (Ijtlerent locations, and no two showed up alike, the range being from 6° to 1U° be ow aero. Wednesday morning we gathered reports from a wider range ot territory in this city, and the range was stil great'r, being from 14° to 20° he low zero. Thursday morning a like ex pern-nce met us, the reports coming in from V® to 12 s below zero. One thing we do know—There has been a wonderful season of cold weather here, such as ha* not been experienced in this section
before tor many years.

Dr. Man-field discussed at length a paper read by Professor Coult< r on "Sci

Dr. Ridpath read a leArned paper on j ‘•The Beech Tree in History,” from i w hich we make the following brief extract: * The antiquity of man in Europe may b - discussed fro n the standpoint ot philology and archascology. as well as from traili ion. The names given to forest trees have a historic value. The wor.i beech, as found in the various Aryan dia lects, always indicates a given tree, ex cept in Greek. In that language the same word means oak’ This strange fact may he accounted for on the ground that the forests of Western anti Northern Europe have been metamorphosed. Tne first forest was of the pious selves •res, or Scotch fir. This was succeeded by a forest of oak. and this in turn by a forest of beerh. Toe beech has prevailed in Northern Europe from a very remote period. The succession of the various forest growths is shown is the peat-bogs of Denmark. The lowest later of peat contains logs of Scotch fir. The second-layer eon tains oak logs, ami the upper layer of beeches. The early Aryans came into Europe while the oak forest prevailed. The word beech tm ans something to eat At first the term was applied to the acorn, then to the oak tree

I he young nvin who got a cent’s worth thtnhiirgor clnese on the Christmas treo thought it was too much fora “scent.” The lin e girl who received acrosseyed, spindh—shanked doll for a Christmas gift was just as happy as the one who received a wax doll with silktn

“Faith, Hooe” and Christmas—but the greatest of all is Christmas. The colored folks had a "soiree in the room up-stairs on the northeast corner of the Square, Christmas night, and enjoyed themselves hugely. The toy dealers report the sale of the •-ual number of "nigg'-r babies” for people to play j"k'-s with. Said the “crabbed old tight-list” to the httle child, on Christinas F.v>>— "Child, a-t thru dreaming of Santa Claus? If ih >u art then thou xhould-t pause— For Santa Chins is one big fraud. Whom tool* do greet and. wild, applaud." And th" little innocent, half asleep and half awake, replied — "Go away. tir. and disturb me not— l.’en now. within the chimney hot. Dear Santa Claus ia coming, Hia Christina! carols humming.” Did you make relative or friend, rich or po >r, happy by remembrance on Christinas Day? Merchants report a very brink Chri»t~ mas trade, especially in articles useful. Christmas has passed, hut there are many who have faded to attend to “settlii g up” duties. All such should make these necessary calls immediately.

o ik forest gave way to beech woods, and the same word which had ori inally meant oak was carried over to the now forest of beech. In Greece this transformation did not occur; so the original word continued to mean oak. It is. therefore, fair to cona’ude that the Aryan race was already in Europe before the change of oak woods tnni beech. The beech forest has prevailed in Denmark since the earliest datws of tradition. It is fair to say that tho time of the transformation of oak into he* ch do-s not beat a date more recent than 2 000 years U C. It seems to he indicated that the ancestors of our own race came into Europe not less than 5 000 years ago. It is thus that history tak<-s hold of philology, archtoology and natural sck-nc, and uses their materials to determine pre-historic events rather than vague traditions. Wir December is not as pleasant as
May—we hone for May.
la?’’Whatever may he true of other business houses, ’tis a fact that tho watch, clock andj-welry establishment of Urattin has rec -ived a very large share of the public patronage during the holidays, there being a continued rush of customers to his business house during the continuance of the holiday trade. Notwithstanding the large sales, by the use of telegraph and express companies, Hrattin's stock is now full and complete in all lines, so if tho readers of The Stab wish anything in the lino of watches, clocks, jewelry, silverware, gold-headed canes, spectacles, etc., he can supply tho demand with goods of varied quality and at lowest prices, and buyers can leave with the assurance that they have bought goods fully up to the representation. Students of natural history can seethe
