©afThe family of Mr. William Sallust, of Mill Creek township, six in number,

Last Thursday morning about two o'clock a serious accident occurred on the Vandalia Railroad, just south of the foot of Indiana street, this city. The particulars as wo learned them from common report are as follows: Freight train No. 9, going east was running in two sections. When the first section arrived in this city, the eng'no was cut loose to do some switching, and the train, numbering some fifteen cars, started to run back, there being considerable down grade westward at that point, and the brakeman in charge was unable to hold it. Gradually the train gained in speed until it reached the point where they crashed into the engine of the second section, about one quarter of a mile west of the rolling mill and nail factory. The trains struck each other with such force that the engine was forced clear through the caboose of the first section, in which were seated two women, whilb the four cars in front of tho caboose were piled up in an indiscriminate mass, consisting of the wrecked cars and their burden of oats, tlour, green hides, etc. The crew of the second section when the danger was discovered, jumped from the train, save the engineer, who stuck to his post, endeavoring to avert the accident, and miraculously 'escaped unhurt, while those who jumped were more or less bruised. Tho people in tho caboose were less fortunate. The women were both tiurt, one of them seriously, having her jaw fractured and her head fearfully lacerated and bruised; the other sustaining severe injuries of one arm. Thu brakeman, who was on top of the cars, was thrown to the ground and had both shoulder and arm crushed, and was badly shaken up. The engineer, named Crawford, spoken of a ove, after making his way from tho engine, discovered that the wrecked cars were on lire, and by heroic exertion released one of the women from tho wreck, wherein she was so tightly wedged that escape seemed impossible, while the lire was gradually and steadily approaching her. Assistance was soon at hand, the injured were carried out upon the high embankment, and a conveyance was secured to convey Mrs. Wightman, aresidont of Terre Haute, who was most seriously injured, to the Central House,
