that passes, that their education must broad and liberal, that which will intik • every human being desire freedom ot thought ami action, and rentier hint wi! ling that his follows shall be blessed in
the same degree 1 .
To do this it is neccisary to exclude everything which shall have u tendency to bia* and contract the mind in its formative period. Defended as tho State must he hy the right opinions of its ple, the schools must he so founded and controlled as to produce the broadest intelligence in the children, so soon to
become citizens.
Thus has arisen tho educational struggle now going on all over the civilized world. The contest is in various stages of development in different countries. Readers are familiar with its phases in the Did World where the light is going on between the Church which would hind and control, and ’he State that would make free. In France progress islow, and the blows dealt uncertain, hut
growing stronger.
Italy has broken ninny of her fetters, but is still hampered and restrained. In 1 Belgium the priest can no longer control primary education. The State is the victor. The Church may establish parish schools, but its power iu those suit-
ported by the public is gone.
Germany holds education entirely in the hands of the State, and makes it compulsory at public expense. Austria litis taken the control from all religious orders, but has yet to make a great advance in order to bring her people to an equality with her Gorman neighbor in
advancement.
So the work goes on. The late disputes iu New England brings the question up in this country as to how far citizens can be controlled by a Church without interference of State authority, which must be paramount in everything. It is likely that popular sentiment will largely decide the matter without legisla-
tive interference.
