A mile north of the village of Phoenix lives Joseph Smith, an honest, industrious farmer. Not until about three years ago did Mr. Smith evince any particular interest in church matters. At that time a revival occurred in the Methodist Church in Phoenix. Mr. and Mrs. Smith attended regularly, and exptiK enced a change of heart. Three or four weeks ago Mrs. Smith became impressed

Meanwhile the man had come to the surface. and with powerful strokes swam toward the boat. At first it was thought that be was trying to save himself, and 1 when he came within reaeli a boat hook was lowered to him. lie would not touch it, but tried bard to get directly in tin* way of the boat, but by this time it was backing. Then a deck hand, by a skillful thrust, caught the man by the shoulder with the hook. The coat was evidently new, and held well fora time, as the man turned and twisted and struggled to get loose. Finally the cloth gave way and tho man, giving a powerful shove, swam away on his back toward the bridge. He was evidently an accomplished swimmer and perfectly at home in the water. When near the bridge be turned on ids face and dived down under the water, but a man speared him w ith another hook and brought him to the surface. He quickly shook himself loose and again went under, while the air bubbles arose from his lips. Again he was fished up, and this time he was drawn so near the bridge that a stout fellow reaching down seized him by tho colter. Then a ladder was put down. Tho man would not climb up. Another man reached down and also seized him, and the next moment the would-be suicide was dragged
dripping from the slip.
Strangely enough he did not appear exhausted. It was noticed that throughout he kept bis mouth tightly closed. This accounted for his freshness. He was taken to the Oak street police station, and on the way he rubbed his h* ad is if it pained him. At the station he gave his name as Charles H. Hays. “1 guess I’m about forty,” be said, in a dazed sort of mariner. ”1 guess I was born in this country. I live in Boston. I don’t know how 1 came in the water.” He afterward said that he was a sailor, just returned from a long cruise, and that he hail been on a protracted spree. He was taken to the Chambers Street Hospital
and treated for alcoholism.

Tho reporter then hunted up Dupee, who was found suffering with internal hemorrhage, which in tho judgement of his surgeon, Dr. Trunk, will result fatally. He denied using any weapon, and claims that Stone burst into the hallway with a razor in one hand and a revolver in the other. "lie swiped at me w ith the razor, and I knocked it hack against his neck, and that’? how he got cut. I had no razor. Then ho began shooting, and 1 ran out and attempted to got behind a pole, when ho hit me. Finally Stone called out: “You cut me, you s—n of a b—h!” Dupeo replied: “Yes, sah, and Tin cutting some more.” and with that ho sprang toward Stone, who immediately began shooting. The women toll much the same story as Williams, but both were reluctant to admit that Dupee and Stone’s wife had wrandcred outside tho commandments. William B. Barrington, of San Francisco, was possessed hy a desire to take life.
