The Cockney Walk.
Richard Grant White in the Atlantic says: Most Englishmen of the lower middle class and the lower class in cities have a way of walking which is a distinguishing habit of common life. I had observed it in Englishmen of this sort in the streets of New York, where I could tell them by it as far as I could see them. They lay themselves out in their walking as if they were doing a day’s work. They walk not only with their feet and legs, but with their hijis and shoulders and with their arms, not swinging the latter, but arching them out more or less from
their sides.and nutting them forward - —

set-out of their four arms from their four sides and will walk as if their locomotion instead of being by human muscles, were
; by clockwork and steam.
The number of their imitators cannot lie told, but an English gentleman has none of this toilsome swagger. He walks quite easily and unconsciously and generally with a good, manly stride, just as a man of corresponding condition of life in I tost-m, New York or Philadelphia will walk, liut in those places you will not see in persons of inferior condition that strange mode of locomotion which i
have endeavored to describe.

Int«*restlnij to WorklnRtvmneii. [New York Telegram ] An enterprise is on foot in this city that must interest many readers of the Telegram. A dispensary for self-sup-jKirting girls and women is to be opened at No. 42 University Place in a short time. The dramatic entertainment iu aid of this project, that is to take place in the Broadway Opera House, on Wednesday afternoon, under the auspices of many of the benevolent and influential ladies of New York, calls attention to some of its peculiar and very admirable features. The purpose is to equip and place upon a self-supporting basis a dispensary for the special use of womenteachers, saleswomen, bookkeepers, sewing girls, shop girls, domestics, and all women who work for their bread. To make the institution independent as well as to recognize and cultivate the self-re-spect of the classes for whom it is designed, a fee of ‘ifteents fur consultation and medicine, and M) rents where instrumental treatment is required, will be charged. Another distinctive feature of the I Provident Dispensary for Workingwo- | men is that it is to he conducted entirely by women physicians under the direction of Mi>o Ella A. Jennings, M. 1). The essentially charitable or rather benevolent character of this enterprise is shown in its alii.rding a gymnasium and reading room for the free use of it- patients and the classes from which they are to come, ' and its arrangements for lectures one eveningln the week u[Kin hygiene, physiology, ventilation and oilier subjects that can Ik-.-iIh- treated of by women to
women.
As a means of propagating special and much-needed knowledge this dispensary is well worthy the eftiirts and the contributions w hich have been required to establish it. Its general economical importance to the public consists in the tendency it will have to diminish pauperism by relieving hospitals of a class of patients who are both able and willing to j _ a moderate sum for the services they need. It only remains to say that this is the first undertaking of tho kind that has been attempted in this country, although it closely resembles several that have been very successfully operated in Lontlou.

Hainan Fa©©. [Youth * Companion.] In nothing <lo men and brutes differ more than in their faces. The differ-c-ucc i< iudepomlcnt culture, and based on a difference of original design ami plan. Man’s face alone was meant to answer to every kind and shade of emotion, to Ik* an index of tho heart. Take simply the power to smile—tho first smile of the babe, the maiden’s smile of love, the mother’s smile of approval or fondness, the cheery smile of friendship, the breezy good-morning j smile, and the last smile that often! lights up tho dying face of the good I man, as if he already caught gleams of the life to come—this lifts man away from the brute almost its far as does the power of speech. One result is, that play of expression which gives the living face an interest and tt beauty so far beyond all that the art "f the sculptor ran attain. Another is that the face of the sjie.-tker often anticipate-- his words.and always helps to itcpret and enforce them. A third result is that the face often |ietra\ • a secret which the person seeks to c'lttceal, or attests the falsehood of his uttered words. A fourth is—since every muscle is strengthened and developed by use and weakened by disuse—that one’s real character comes, in time, to stand out on his features. The avaricious, the voluptuous, tho lustful, the haughty, the vain, the shallow and silly, the hard, the stingy, the fretful, the bad-tempered, can be read, often, by a situd' 1 glanoe, and that, too, bene .th*artificial expressions put on as a cloak. So. too, tiie genial, the kind-hearted, the d iwnright honest, the thoroughly pure, the tritely brave, the refined, the •vlf-roiitrolled. are “ known and read of at' men.” The latter are not only as - inshine in our dark world, but they tire among our best lit lps to goodness. Another important fact in the case is, ti .t not only do the inward feelings net it: i the f u-ial muscles, but, through that ta-H.-x nervous action, which is tt uni . ' :*-il fact in physiology, the action of tin- facia! muscles reacts upon the inward f elines. This increases the inward I I'eelin.M hv giving them expression. But by eh,-' king the outward expression we al--’ ehe' It tie- feelings themselves. Further, anyone who will re-olutely change the facial expression from gl and niorosen.e-s toe'icoriness and hope, will akoo-i inevitably litid a correspond ing inward change.
